My son will be 7 next month and is saving his allowance for a nitro car. He likes the Revo, as well as any stadium.

I race electric 20 years ago, but never nitro. He is to young for racing but we have two tracks near by.

Money is not a major issue but would like to keep it under control. Looking for reliablity.

Thanks

did i read it right? 7?? i would rather get something electric, not because of "tuning" cause i know it wont be a problem with modern engines (mostly). But nitros tend to be a bit faster out of the box than electrics, i would suggest something cheaper and slower for beggining, also easy to work on, at this age, and at first its normal to crash alot (theyr slower, but not slow). And it requires repairs, and getting spare parts

Definetly would have to recommend getting the youngster an electric car of truck if they run them at the track. We have a few 10-12 year olds running nitro onroad cars and they are forever breaking them! Mostly they DNF all the heats and mains just too much power for them to handle. Try one of the associated or Losi RTR electric trucks or buggies they sell for a decent price and for a little more you can get a decent charger and a few batteries. Once he masters one of those and feels the need for more speed and power then try out the nitro. If you used to race electric then maybe you both can get into it and do the father son thing. I have two sons that race with me along with the wife on occasion and it is a great family outing! It should not take long for you to get your knowledge level back up with all the latest and greatest electric stuff!

Yeah a nitro powered R/C is quite a responsibility for a 7 year old. Take him to a track and get him around some that are running, that will tell you one way or another if he's really ready.

I forgot a key piece, he has my old electric assoiciate RC10 off road, and has learn to handle it, actually better than the other kids in the neghbor hood that just want to crash it.

Driving ability isn't the biggest issue with a 7 year old and nitro. It's starting and tuning it. if you're sold on nitro, I'd suggest the MGT. It's the easiest thing to start in the history of r/c. Fill 'er up, prime 'er, turn on the radio, plug in the ignitor, give 'er a pull. Literally, one pull every time if she's primed. It's incredible. My LST also starts exceptionally easy once it's primed.

^^^ but the LST has some INSANE power, not that the Monster GT does not { I know i have one it's TRICK] but that mach .26, once thats broken in it's insane.

Totally agreed, which is why I suggest the MGT. The last thing a 7 year old needs is a 13 lb. 40 mph monster truck. The MGT should be plenty fast enough to keep him entertained, but slow enough that to still be controllable. Not that an LST is uncontrollable, far from it actually, but I still suggest the MGT above the LST for a 7 year old. Either truck rocks though. I've got both, and I love both. The LST definately has the stronger engine...and not just by a little. It's in a different class than the MGT power-wise. Literally, the difference is that huge.

And thats the reason I am putting a MACH.26 inn my MGT next week because of the insane power.

lol, if you really want a nitro, get a fairly low powered one and then set the throttle adjustments on the transmitter so it can only open it halfway or so :D

But i would recommend electric too

What do you think of the Revo

Good..but too fast for a 7yr old. Either, get a 1/8th aka MGT, as that will be a ton stronger than a 1/10 scale.. or get a traxxas stampede..Those are really strong. I think a stampede would be your best bet. Its a 2wd electric monster truck. Put in a P2k, an ESC, and a GP3300 stick pack, and you will have an awsome basher, with good speed..wheelies..and toughness.

I like the Revo as his original thought, that or a sprotraxx or jaco there new stadium truck, traxxas is very nitro newb friendly, holds up fairly well and is a whole lot of fun all in one package, and I'm thinking of buying stock in Traxxas LoL really though they make some awesome trucks, I run a 777 but am loving this new Revo it is so cool...

i would recommend electric for a starter. if you want a truck i suggest a xxx-t2 or a t4 but nitro definatly a mgt

Is this to bash, or to race?

- In the UK all the young racers race the mardave v12
- But you dont really get it outside the UK

something to learn on, better yet to bash

Then the MGT would be your best path.

Traxxas's REVO is awesome, but the company is know for the tuning problems.
I would strongly suggest the MGT.. Best to work on, and the tuning is awesome.

Get him a electric to start and you get a nitro to "experiment" on before he gets one.

Apparently he has electric :D. And if its like You say that he can handle it, and You dont mind spending cash on spare parts, revo is nice car, rather durable and handles similaly to ST's so it would be easier to start.
Also mgt is worth looking, ive never seen one in person, but its definitely a good truck

The Tamiya TNX is worth checking out too, can't beat the reliability and tuning ease with factory O.S. power :D

Get him a electric to start and you get a nitro to "experiment" on before he gets one.I like that idea...you pick up a Revo...and get him an electric rustler ( Bulletproof $150 stadium truck ) or something similar.

thanks for all of the feedback.

I like the nitro for me and the electric for him idea.

Now the problems is what should a 50 year old buy?

Thanks

MGT or Savage for your self. Two of the toughest MT's out there. I bought my 5 year old daughter a Traxxas Stampede. An electric one though. She likes playing with it once in awhile. If she really starts to take to it, then I might get her a E-Maxx. There is a truck for your son. Electric 4x4 MT.

get yourself something faster than your son's,there's nothing worst than a son picking on his dad cause he's slower so do yourself a favor and get a cen genesis 46 :D

A 2005 Mustang GT. :p

In all seriousness. Traxxas engines has a HUGE problem with the tuning. And my bro has but a hole in the manifold by running it on flat pavement.(how? We are stunned too). But for you, I say a LST. More power, you will like it. Also, VERY strong. Just an awesome truck all the way around.

For him...Traxxas Rustly(electric version with the ESC. The Mechanical Speed Control is just compleat crap. And if we wants to go faster later on, you can almost build a rusty on hop-ups! So you have upgrades almost every corner you look in.

I'd vote for an E-Rusty also. A younger kid in the neighborhood got into r/c and got an E-Rusty (thanks to me :D) and they are very durable. They're fast enough when you are starting and have a lot of hop-ups availabe.

Very true! I think this might be my next truck. I really want a Savage, but all of the guys at the shop run Savages. I want to be different, so I've already got the MGT and LST, maybe I'll pick up a TNX some day to go along with them.
