View Full Version : What was your first "real" R/C?

Ok, how long has everyone here been in to R/C?

My first car was a JRX2,

Before that I owned a Traxxas Sledgehammer(sp?)

My brother owned a Tamiya Fox (complete with the hard plastic cased Tamiya 6 cell hump pack), and a Blackfoot before I had my first cars though which is how I got into it.

I find it crazy how much better electronics are now a days, I had Sanyo 1200 SCR's when I first started, rated at ~248 sec @ 20amps!!

I started with a Tamiya Tlo1 (the kit version, now they are selling the rtr  ) when I was 8 or 9 years old. Those cars are literally indestructable, the only thing I ever managed to do was strip out the pinion and spur gear, actually it's not really a spur gear, Im not sure what its called. I was into radioshack cars and my friend told me about real rc cars and I thought it was really cool that you could build them yourself. He actually got one, but never built it and I got mine for christmas that year.

Bolink Challenger... 1/12th... looked sorta like the one on the top right side of this page, but the top chassis plate was smaller... and green fiberglass like the bottom plate (this one looks yellow). Yeah, it had white nylon front blocks and spindles and rear blocks like this one. And that beige (Kydex?)front bumper. The right rear block deformed from motor heat, and we'd make a primitive heat sink by cutting a small piece of sheet aluminum to put between the motor and the block and extend it up above and over the motor. It was a "beauty"... got it in 1983... it came with some CanAm type body. I still have it.

From the time I saw a copy of RCCA at my school library in the seventh grade back in '88 I was hooked, I remember it like it was yesterday I don't remember what month it was, but I remember that it was the one with Clint Eastwood in it, they had a feature about the use of R/C cars in his latest movie at the time, it was the "Deadpool". I wish I still had that issue.
But back then my parents couldn't afford to buy me one of these expensive toys, it was not till 1998 when I already being married and with a kid decided to finally indulge and buy myself one, it was a Tamiya TA02 with the Mercedes CLK DTM body, I loved that thing, then came the TA03F, then the TA04, the F103, the TC3, the HPI RS4micro and RS4mt, the F201, and last the Xray evo2 with c-hubs. The only ones I don't have anymore are the TA02, the micro and the TC3.

My first was a tamiya stadium blitzer(sitting on my closet floor, lost the front end somehow).Took me a year of saving when I was 12 to get the kit, 2 1500mah packs, charger, and KO propo beat gear radio.I would like to get it running but it would most likely take more than the $100 I could spend to buy a brand new one.

My first real rc was the Kyosho ZR-1 Corvette that I bought back in 1987. It still runs and is sitting in the basement right now. I take it out and run it every now and then but it's sooooo old it breaks something every time and it's impossable to find parts anymore. In '87 I thought that car was the hottest thing out there.
My first nitro vehicle was that little cox PT19 trainer. What a blast that was in the back yard flying it past the back of the house and only missing by a few inches.

First for me was the Hornet I bought from Sheldon hobbies mid 80's , think my transmitter was a Challanger 250 , Back then if you had Tamiya black motor you were the man in the neighborhood . After that I had a bunch of others and still have most the remains of a few of those relics in the garage . My oldest kid is 10 maybe we will fix one up for her and she can be retro at the local track :D

When I as about 10 or so, my parents bought me a corvette. It was the first true radio controlled car I had. I was happy as can be with this battery hog, much more so than the spiderman on a string remote controlled car.

After mowing lawns a few years later and saving up, I bought a grasshopper to race against my friend who had the hornet. I lost the hornet during moves across country, and eventually took a trip through a hobby shop and bought an RC10. It had that old familiar mechanical speed control and the ceramic resistor that used to so lovingly burn your fingers. I raced that for a year, and put it in the closet bringing it out now and again over the years.

While in Germany, owned a POS nitro rally car that fell apart if you blinked at it wrong. After ordering the newly released RC10GT (now with bearings!!), the rally car went to parts and pieces and eventually kept the trash can company.

About 2 years ago, found this site and it restirred the old desires. I now have the old RC10, the GT, a newer FT GT, an NTC3 and a bl M18.

my first RC was a thunder tiger nitro powered rally, it had the escort rally shell but it had the blue and white shell not the repsol one, cant remember the exact name given to this model.I had my first model when I was 11 years old.At one point I had 14 cars all in working order they were all nitro except for one which was the Kyosho spider10 electric.Ive had cars from most of the major manufacturers which include kyosho, traxxas, thundertiger, hotbobies(on the way in the post,Its the gt but its the single engine model),tamiya, hoaboa(ofna to all you americans).

A Nikko Lobo was my first RC car (the first one with a stick controller - circa '88).

The first hobby-level car was a Team Losi Junior-T. I then quickly went through three or four Losi's while racing local and regional ROAR sanctioned events in the mid-90's.

Right now I still have a XX and XXT laying around, and a Revo that I backyard bash with. I'm definitely getting the itch to race again...no...must resist... :p

My first was a Latrax Corvette 1/12 scale electric pan car. Metal chassis and motor pod, came with a box-style TX (copy of the Futaba box-style wheel radio) and an ESC. The ESC was constantly burning out transitors, but it worked well otherwise. Latrax later became Traxxas. I raced the Latrax with a small local club where everyone ran the same car, sort of an early "spec" class. This was circa 1978-1980.

Second was an Associated RC12E with the old resistor/wiper arm speed control. Raced that a lot as the club moved into the newer cars (we again all ran the same cars/batteries/motors). Had a blast!

Since then the list is too long to remember them all...
