Andrew,

Peter just wrote an excellent article on building the perfect shocks in the April issue of RC Car Action, check it out.

A gear ratio, put simply, is the ratio between two different gears. Example-if you have a 100-tooth spur gear and a 10-tooth oinion the gear ratio for those two gears would be 10:1. Or it takes 10 revolutions of the pinion to rotate the spur gear once (regardless of pitch). To find the final drive ratio you take the transmission ratio and multiply it by the pinion/spur ratio. Say the tranny had a 3:1 ratio that would give you a final drive ratio of 30:1.

Pitch is basically the size of the teeth. The bigger the number the smaller the teeth (64-pitch). The smaller teeth allow finer tuning of the gear ratio, but are more sensitive to gear mesh and abuse. That's why most on-road cars use 64-pitch and off road electric uses 48-pitch.

Hope I helped,

Derek

Andrew, If you are talking about gearing (what size pinion) refer the manual for recommendations.

For the pitch Q, TC's and pancars will have 64 pitch, sometimes 48, modern trucks usually have 48 and older ones, or nitro usually have 32 I think. You will want to gear your car appropriate to the track, so more or less teeth cannot really be answered unless you know the track.
