When building my tranny for the MF XXXT I found that the instructions did not say to put grease on the tranny gears. If you have two metal gears rubbing together, shouldn't they be greased?

The xxxt does not have metal to metal gears , run them dry .

Even if you're putting in a metal tranny gear upgrade (which I think is a bad idea, but anyway . . . ) no, the gears of a ball type tranny of a Losi or AE does not get grease. All that does is collect dust and make a mess, accellerating wear. The only grease you need is a dab of high-temp silicone grease in each ball hole, just enough to cover the balls and no more.

I was running my xxx-t dry per instructions with my new brushless and it started to make some funny noises. So I took it apart and put some associated diff grease in there and it is very smooth now. I agree that it will attract more dust, but I tend to clean and relube every couple of months as I dont run on very dusty surfaces right now. All in all it did seem to make a difference.

By the way I am trying a little trick I heard about on here where you take earplugs and place them in the slots in the differential where the axles fit in to stop dirt. Sounds like a good idea.

Most gears are made from some material (nylon, composite, delron) that may already have lubracating characteristics. Whenever there is some kind of noise inside the tranny, I check the meshing of the teeth and file them until the mesh is smooth and this usually eliminates the usually noise. Tried the Paragon lubricant (dried to a black color) years ago on my old RC10, running it dry but spending a lttle extra time meshing and filing the gear teeth made the tranny much quietier and smooth.

I made sure to check meshing and it was perfect so were all the bearings, but the lube was dried up and hadnt been changed in about 10 hours of run time. By the way I dont put gobs of it in there just enough to coat the gear.

I grease the gear boxes in all my cars. So far I have had no trouble. I agree it can be messy when tearing down to make a minor adjustment but all in all it makes me feel better at least

I personally lube everything up in the tranny (cept for the diff, locked it in the T3 just for fun:D). Especially when I rebuild my Rustler tranny with alum. idler. Metal on metal contact ain't fun. :(
