I don't know if I mistyped or if you're just mocking me, but I would think you can get PVC pipe at any hardware or plumbing store.

A basement track sounds pretty cool to me! I’d personally be worried about the walls. You might want to get some Styrofoam or something to pad the walls with. As for the track itself metal "button" work great for corners. They are circular disks from the backs of tractors. You can get them in a few different sizes. They are a little tricky to find however, but they will last forever and really save your car. You can drive over them (kinda) without messing up your car. They are really good at keeping people honest and not cutting corners – without the risk of breaking something. For the rest of the track you could use 2x4s or something. I know that at my track we use thin pieces of wood that cars can drive over, but that might not be necessary if you’re the only one driving on it. PVC pipe can be used, but it moves around a lot – even if taped to the ground. It works great on off-road tracks where you can bury it, but on-road it just tends to slide around when someone hits it. Also most cars can’t drive over it, leading to more problems. Check out some of the pictures from my track (http://www.socalrc.com). There are also a few videos and stuff. It really works out well for all types of cars. Hope some of this information helps…

Hey,

I was wondering if any one had any resources or ideas on building a indoor basement track (decent sized basement) or a backyard one.

I want to race On-Road electrics Touring/Rally type.

I have seen some pictures that use PVC pipe, and while that is probably cheep, it's not very attractive.

Thanks for any tips!

it doesnt matter how it looks as long as it works. Its better then ramming your car into a basment wall! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

(ok, it does matter how it looks a little, but youll be the coolest in town because you have a track in your basment!)

a suggestion about PVC, you could put sand in the pipes to hold them down

PVC is a very good track material. I've made several road courses using the stuff, it's easy to work with, quick to set-up/break-down, cheap, and absorbs some of the impact when you whack it with your car. Make sure you duct tape all the junctions together, nothing ****** people off more then when the track comes apart mid-race!

I think I found what I'm building my track out of! I went to home depot and looked around at materials trying to get an idea.

I found this black tubing in the pumbing section. It's ribbed and looks pretty cool. It's about 6" in diameter and you get 100 feet for $20. I'm going to cut that in half so I have 200 feet of halves.

For the straight aways I'm going to use 2X4's or some sort of semi-wide thin wood. I'm going to nail the sides of the black tubing to the wood to keep it perfectly straight.

I'm going to figure out some sort of secure way to connect them together so they can still be taken apart (corners and straight pieces) like a slot car set.

I'm also planning on a bridge, so the track overlaps to save space. We have also thought of getting old tires to be like thoes big ones you see at race tracks (the big Goodyear tire) or getting some venting and welding it to make a tunnel.

I'm going to keep a photo journal of all this and make a web site for it. How can I tell you guys where it's at without getting yelled at on the board? I saw we weren't allowed to say "go to my web address" in here.

it should be ok to lead us to your site. As long as your sole purplose of your thread was to lead us to your site.

To hold the boards together they make all sorts of brackets that would work great. They come in rectangles, squares, Ts, Ls, and so on. They can be screwed to the back side of the boards and unscrewed for transportation. And you found the same stuff I was going to use for my track. Except I was going to get the stuff with the holes in it to allow water to drain out and to use for anchoring. Here the black pipe with the holes was a dollar cheaper too. Plow disks can be found at feed lots and other tractor supply stores such as John Deere, CASE, and so on. That is Farm/Ranch tractor stores not lawn tractor stores. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif
