i'm going to be starting up my own little paint shop soon but it'll be in an apartment so i need to find the quietest airbrush compressor possible. i've been looking at some iwata hp-cs/ compressor combos on the bay for 200-300 i also have a chance to get a hobbico model maker compressor faily cheap (needs repair.) what do you think is the best and quietest airbrush compressor?

I've had the hobby compressors and I can tell everyone, they're not necessary. Your best bet is to take a trip down to Wal-Mart, Sears, Sams Club, Harbor Freight, or some other hardware outlet store and buy a good compressor there. Look for something above 2.5 gallons to allow you to spray longer before the compressor kicks on. IMO, it's a better solution to using a hobby compressor. When you're shopping, ask for the quietest one and make a decision from there.
Another option is to get a large tank and fill it with air. It'll last you a while, and is as quiet as you'll ever find. If you want to go the extra step, fill the tank with CO2 to eliminate the need for a moisture trap.

Yeah, the quietest option is a large 5-10 gallon air tank. You can get one for $30-40, and the regulator and water trap for the same (My Paasche was $35). I look forward to trying it when I move (Whenever that may be LOL). A 5 gallon tank charged to 100psi is good for about 10 minutes of spraying.

I do alot of airbrushing. So, I bought a "Silent" compressor from Jun-Air (I don't even know if they still make them). But its super quiet. Just a slight buzz then a whoosh sound when the air tank is full. 11 years ago it was about 400 bucks. Maybe steep, but I still have it today and it still works like a champ!

everyone keeps saying the same thing about getting a real compressor. i have a sears 2.5 compressor but it's super loud i just don't think the neighbors would put up with that kind of thing. of course the wife has told me i need to keep the paint shop at work so we'll see what happens.
