Sweet rear pod insp gadget. Im still using the stock one with my EXO chassis. I am still actually having trouble getting the front steering setup, because my right captured ball type thing hits the pully.

the first thing in did was make a 6cell batt holder. Just get a 2cell holder from radio shack for like 3 bucks, wire it up to teh stock box for a 6cell holder. and i mounted the 2 extra cells to the topdeck. Sure its not best for the cener of gravity. but it does make it alot faster. thats the cheapest bang for the buck mod i can think of. Only really must have mod i can think of is the stonger front axles steal, alum doesnt rally matter, just the OEM plastic ones SUCK!!!!

Sweet. For you two who are just getting into micros, make sure that if you get an upgrade motor you NEED aluminum front universals. You will rip apart the stock ones within a few seconds with a mod in there.

Will a micro with a stock motor run on 4.8v? I will go to 7.2 soon, but not enough cash on hand now. Will it go really slow? How long till the 4 NiCd AA's need charging again?
Tstalion79
12-22-2002, 08:23 PM
rechargable aa's will be VERY VERY slow. Rechargable AA's have .2 less volts than regular non-rechargable AA's, and those are slow enough as it is. Your micro will probably go about 5-6 mph. Definately get a good 7.2 pack asap.

Actually, not true-
When they say 1.5 volts on alkaline batteries, that it measuring their batteries, right as is. But with rechargeble batts, 1.2 volts is a measurment of their average voltage over a discharge time, freshly peaked rechageble "1.2 volt" batts can have a peak voltage of over 1.7 volts :D (my 1500 sanyo's do :D)
Trust me, you will have a lot more punch using rechargebles over alkaline stuff :)

I was looking at HPI's Steel universals. They should do fine right?
Also, if I were to get Ratzas Pan Chassis would I need anything else? I would also get the Rear Shock Pod, but I was curious to know if the Chassis required any other Mods.
Thanks!

The ratzas pan chassis bolts right up in the same way the stock one does.
Tstalion79
12-23-2002, 12:26 PM
The ratzas chassis is horrible. It is not durable at all and it is the least adjustable of all the chassis's due to the fact that the rear t bar isnt interchangable. If you want a good chassis go for the penguin le mans or the epic EXO. The penguin is a direct replacement chassis so it would be easier. You need more stuff for the epic.

I ran the ratzas for a while. It's just like the stock chassis, it just allows for a lower CG begause the electronics can be mounted on the lower deck. I didn't run it long enough to be able to tell if it was reliable or not, but it is not very adjustable. I like the Epic for a lot of reasons but the battery layout is killer.

What else would I need if I bought he Team Epic Chasis?
Where's the cheapest place to get the Team Epic Chassis. Their website sells it for $50, Micro RC Shop sells it for $40. Any places sell it for cheaper?
Thanks!
jkerr0043

Micro RC shop is probably the best place to get it. You'll need the micro servo, 81mg if I remember off the top of my head. Also check the tool list that they have on the instruction. You can get that from their website. You will also need to be able to either build new packs or disassemble your old ones and rebuild them. If you don't have metal braid you'll need that as well.

Wow, I just ran the soft tires that I picked up awhile ago :)
And geez, they are so sticky (with a little simple green :)) that after 30 seconds of driving on my hardwood floors, I hardly had any traction because the tires were covered with dog hair :D
Of course, there is no real place to test them out, cause there is frost all over our drive, ice driving is fun though :D

That's strange I didn't have that problem with mine...so you have the links on the front or back of the servo saver? They are supposed to be on the back...on the front they will definately hit the pulley. Also are you using the 81mg servo? Other ones may fit but their servo saver off-set may be different.

Grifter look at www.teamspeedster.com too. Microrcshop only ships via UPS so unless you buy a lot the shipping is very expensive. speedster will ship USPS priority mail if you want. As far as what you need jkerr nailed it...81mg servo, battery heat shrink, battery braid, and wire. The rest of the parts work just fine from the kit stock. In fact the one in their video they raced and just whooped everyone with still had the stock gear diffs. Hopups I would suggest though would be the GH front adjustable ball diff, a rear ball diff, and a graphite rear deck of some sort. All though the latter you may want to hold off on as Team Epic is working on one of their own. Also if you go with a 300 sized motor I found out from Michael over at Epic that the blue motor plate from Orion sits the motor 1mm higher than the ARM one. The ARM one puts the motor right down on the rear t-bar and binds the rear suspension...hence the modifications I had to do to mine.

For the epic chassis it is crucial that you get the epic servo mount. If not, you will have to use shoe goo to put down your servo and that is really annoying and it is extremely hard to get the servo off without damaging the chassis.

Hey Tstallion- make sure the black swivel end is on the bottom side of your steering knuckles. I've noticed a lot of people with this occurance mistankingly place the swivel on top causing the heavy pulley contact ;) Refer to the photo in the instructions.

Mike,
Are you going to have your car at Poway on the 4th? I got your chassis, batteries, motor, tires, all kind of goodies to try and keep up with you and Orlando. I just need to get a new rear ball diff but for right now the gear diff is working good enough.

You don't have to buy the micro servo for the epic but it will work better that way. The chassis also comes with shrink wrap. You will need the tools to install it with but other than that you need to make a battery for it. To do that you need a solderin iron, solder, and braid(I am using desoldering braid on mine, works great).
I am looking at getting another chassis for my other micro. Is the ARM chassis any good or is it just like stock except a pan chassis? Is the Ratzas worth the extra money from the ARM? Can they both work with a standard 6 cell pack?
Where is the cheapest place to buy 2/3a 1100mah NiMhs? I was going to get them from promatch but they are out of stock. Is it worth waiting for?

gotspeed- dont get the arm or ratzas chassis. get the penguin. i have an epic and I have driven a penguin and they are both amazingly good. I have also driven a ratzas. The ratzas drives jsut like a stock micro. I personally like the penguin and epic micro's. Pick either of those.

I own an epic chassis and love it but I want to get something around the $25- for my other micro. Is the ARM or ratzas chassis even worth it? I noticed a huge difference in how fast it would react and how tight I could turn it but will I get that same difference with one of the other chassis?

Hi all.
A couple friends and myself have decided to get RC cars. These are our first cars. Our goal was to try and get set-up with car and electronics for $100.00. We soon realized that this budget was a tad low to get us anything other than toy class cars.
We then started looking at the Micro RS4, and felt that this scale car was best suited for our intended purpose, however, we are still trying to keep the costs down, without throwing away our money on inferior products.
I found a LHS that is selling the Micro RS4 kit for $80. They also have the RTR version for $179.00, but I'm trying to cut costs buy purchasing the kit, and the electronics separetly. Another LHS is offering the following electronics package for $70:
Airtronics Blazer Sport Radio with XTM Sportsman ESC.
Is this package comparable to the TX-2 radio you get with the RTR package?
While both of these controllers might be considered entry level, that is really what we are looking for. If we decide to pursue the hobby, I realize we may start replacing components and what not. But for right now, saving the $29, and getting our carsand electronics for $150.00 is about the best deal I have found.
What do you all think? Are these prices in line? I've searched most of the online-hobby stores I could locate, but couldn't find a similiar deal.
Thanks in advance for your input.

That is about the best price you will find. With the $30 you saved you could buy a 6 cell battery for $20.
It is an entry level setup but you are an entry level driver. For the micro it makes alot less difference than with other cars too.

I'll take your word for it Tstalion79 and look into the Epic and Penguin Chassis.
Does the Penguin Chassis come with pretty much everything? Their website lists all this: Upper, Wide Lower, and Rear Chassis Plates made out of M1.5 Quasi-Grade woven carbon graphite plate, M2.0 Rear Pod Plate, P3506b Low Roll Plate Set (3 Graphite roll plates), P3505 M3.0 G10 Battery Plate, Directions, and all hardware required to convert your Micro RS4 to the P3500lm.
At first I was wondering why it was listed for $63, but if all of this is included it seems like a great deal.
I was looking into using just a regular Battery Pack(Ex. Orion's 7.2v Battery Pack), not one that I have to make. Am I going to be able to mount it on this Chassis?
Thanks!
Scrad
12-24-2002, 10:54 AM
Grifter, the Penguin chassis comes with everything you need to convert from the stock micro. And yes you can run the Orion configuration battery pack. The kit comes with a battery mounting plate that screw into the bottom of the chassis. So you can remove battery pack pretty easily. The Penguin chassis is capable of a lot of different battery configurations. Like the regular pack. Cells down the sides. Down the middle. But If you have more than one battery pack I'd get another battery mount. Also if you are running a micro servo get the micro servo mount. It's much easier that building one like I did.

Hey- I didn't know they are racing already! It's possible we'll be there but with Daltons running on Sunday i'm afraid the turnout will be very light. We had a great micro turnout for the Toys 4 Tots race in Orange (EXOs' were there in force TQing and winning ;) ) so I'm looking forward to more micro racing in the new year.
The gear diff will be fine as long as the right wheel hub doesn't wobble- if it does it makes the car loose in one direction...

I was curious to know what you guys think about the Alloy Hop Ups for the Micro. Like all of Integy's Alloy parts( http://secure400.automatedshops.com/cgi-bin/ams/shopzone30.cgi/~wfp16353/st_main.html?p_catid=42 ).
Are they much heavier than stock? Do they decrease performance? With a Car this small it seems like you have to be pretty careful what you do to it weight wise.

Hey with that Super Brain charger you have to MAKE SURE to charge at .5 amps and set your volt threshold to 20. It will take a really long time to charge (about 2 hours) but your performance will be awesome as well as your run times. Never charge at over 1.5 amps either or u will damage ur pack.

TS...The easy way to get something off that has been shoe goo'd in is to cut the edge with an exacto knife...if the glue was thick enough it will peel right off from the cut.
As far as charging I wouldn't reccomend going above 1amp... 1/2amp prefered. These little cells are not made specifically for RC like the sub C's in 1/10th so they cannot handle quick charging and discharging nearly as good.
I've almost got my Epic rebuild done now...all I'm waiting for now is the aluminium posts for the rear deck. I'm getting antsy to run it with the new motor and see how it'll do.

Kden46
01-13-2005, 01:16 AM
HPI sells metal pinions and they have set screws to hold them on. The 45 turn from what I've heard is not much faster than a stock motor. And for the price probably not worth it. I would say buy a good 6 cell pack like either KAN's or GP1100's!

If you want the best bang for the buck go with a 300-size motor. I just got my kit about a month ago and until I put a 6-cell 7.2-volt battery pack and a 300 big block I think my Mini-Z’s where faster. Still have work to do to it like put the some decals on. :)
Sorry picture did not take the first time was to big. Needs decals. :D
The metal pinion gears will not work with a big block 300-size motor. I tried just about all the stock size motors and they are way to slow. Heres a picture of the Penguin chassis I am running.

Hey, I'm thinking about getting a Micro RS4 and was wondering what would be a good ESC and motor setup for bashing around. Is the HPI modified motor any good. I'm trying to keep this cheap and it will be my first hobby grade electric car. Also I will have an Airtronics MX-3 by the time I get this car so what reciever/servo setup would be good for bashing. Sorry for all of the questions, I'm totally clueless about electric cars.

I would not get the HPI modified! I heard it is not much faster then the stock motor. First do want something that is good or do you want something that is cheap as I am sorry in this hobby they do not go in the same sentence. ESC depends on what motor you get as a lot of the ones made for the Micro RS4 will not let you go much bigger on motor size. Here is what I recommend not cheap but very good.
HPI dual link set for mounting servo with servo saver
LPR reverse ESC
Hitec HS-81MG servo
300 motor and motor mount.

Servo- http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXN679&P=ML
Dual Link Set- http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCYT1&P=ML
Motor- What would be a good inexpensive motor to run with this ESC and a good battery pack with good run times.
Again Thaks for your help :)
Your right on the Servo and dual link but I would go with this ESC as the one you are showing is kinda big. Here is a link to the one I run.

hello, i also have the hitec servo on my micro rs4 and i would definitly reccomend that. I'm running:
-orion elite modified micro motor
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBEF4&P=7
-novak spy reversable esc
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCNR7&P=7
(i've heard that they have came out with a new micro esc (foward only) for racing and it might be cheaper)
-hitec fm dcx reciever
-lously rechargeable aaa's
word of advice: this was also my first electric kit as i also have 2 other nitro offroads and i would probably recommend getting a offroad micro over this. Unless you are planning to race, bashing around the house with these gets pretty boreing. So my solution was to bust out the skateboard ramps and jump the living crap out of it. i have not yet to break a part but i think one of the offroad micros would have better suited me.

It does sound like it would get boring driving around the house, plus I got a dog that would chase the thing so im kinda now leaning towards an offroad micro like the rc18t. I'm kinda stuck between the two. Well tonight I'm going to do some research on the rc18t and go from there. Thanks for all of your help

By the time you buy the Novak spy ESC and the high price Team Orion motor you would have about as much as in a better ESC and a 300 motor that will be way faster then the Team Orion Elite Modified. All so with the spy you are limited to not much if anything more then the stock size motor. Why would you only run it around the house? What is wrong with driveways, parking lots, the street and so on? I have nitro off road and I like them a lot but I do like on road as well. You will never get an off road vehicle to handle on the road like and on road vehicle! That is why they make both. Just my opinion.
(1)
Novak spy $55
Team Orion motor modified motor $43
Total $98
(2)
LRP Quantum reverse $90
300 motor $10 to $20
MUCH FASTER Total $110
AND YOU CAN
USE LPR ESC FOR
EVEN BIGGER MOTORS!

Instead of reading all these threads trying to find an answer can someone please tell me if they put a Micro Trinity Monster motor in their Micro yet, and if yes how did you get the pinion to reach the spur? I currently am having trouble trying to get it close enough so that the teeth can spin the spur. I'm using and 11 tooth pinion and the optional 300 mount.

Hey guys, I'm finally getting a kick in the butt to get my micro going. I just bought a chassis off of a guy on one18th.com and it's a motek. Does anyone know about these? I sure don't but I want to be able to race and enjoy it so I guess I will. My track might start racing these along with the other 18th scale stuff ie trucks. Trucks cannot turn but they got big tires for the straights. I'm running a 45 hpi motor with a hpi esc made for the micro. I got a 5 cell battery pack that I'm training for racing. It's small but I hope it does well.

I just bought an MRS4 RTR over the weekend. The car is pretty fun. My questions are:
The car doesn't track straight, it crab walks in a way. How can I eliminate this?
Is the RTR version and the Kit version the same aside from electrics?
Does the RTR come with ball bearings? I thought I saw one in there somewhere.
Who makes the quickest motor for the Micro RS4?
minijosh
03-16-2005, 06:14 AM
Are you driving it on a think carpet? I found out that my cars love to drift by themselves on thick carpet. Quickest motor? You can drop a 540 motor in yours if you set it up. Not sure about the bearings question though.

03-16-2005, 09:44 AM
What exactly do you mean by crab walking? Is the rear end stepping out? I'd hazard a guess and say that it probably has something to do with your rear diff. There are tiny plastic gears in there that can't take too much abuse, so if the diff was set too loose at the factory you may have one wheel not being powered at all, or powered only occasionally. Hard to describe. Have you checked for the usual suspects? (binding, excess flashing, etc)
performula
03-16-2005, 10:24 AM
What I mean, is that in a straight line, going front to back without steering input the car zig zags. I consider it crab walking in a way. Either the rear axle was bent from the factory or the quality is subpar. Maybe I should have avoided the "RTR" feature, this is my first RTR purchase.
I plan to upgrade the chassis, but I want to get a motor and enjoy it the way it is now, but faster. I do not know which motor to buy.

Well I bought a hitec 81mg from cheapservos.com and it got here within 4 days. Not bad for being shipped overseas. I wish tower would do the same.
The Micro RS4 is actually faster than the M18 and handle better than any Mini-trucks. But don't forget chassis upgrade can bring even lower center of gravity than ever before, this is the secret of M18.

The front ball diff verses the one way is simple. You don't get any front end braking with the one way because it spins only one way. Forward and it will keep spinning. The ball diff and gear diff both spin both ways. When you have the one way in, your rear tires are doing all the breaking so when you hit the brakes, you will spin but if you control the speed thru the corner, then you will come out faster because of the speed you carried thru.
I think the one-way is ********, it makes the car turns with understeel and over heat the motor and it even make the car to brake longer and drain the battery very fast. The oem front differential make the car drives smoothly and turn easily and brake easily without abusing too much the motor. And longer duration of fun. But the downside of the oem gear differential is the complexity to assemblyand align it and the poor reliability of those small gears. It could easily tear its off.
I have just upgraded my micro with a new GH Front Ball Differential. It work better than the oem front diff. It is smoother and control even better over twisty track.

I have a sleeper 480 [9 cells, GM V3 ESC & Futaba Digital Control]. Every time I drive the car, it spins out. If I go slowly, it is fine. Like in the middle of the run from slow to fast, when it starts to speed up, it spins out. I have slick tires on all 4.
Well Micro rs4 ables to handle standard size electronics and servos, and it ables to hold any kind of batteries: AA, AAA thru 2/3A. It is a low fiction single belt driven. It is easy to adopt any size of motor from: 130 to 540 with minor modification.
M18 is an amazing shaft-drive. But it requires micro electronics and servo. It only ables to hold 2/3A pack and motor size from 130 to 480 with modification.
Xray and Hpi are both great touring cars maker. They both created hight performance belt driven rc cars.
1/18 touring is fun to race. Especialy with the mamba comp X. It does outperform the 1/10 Class but not the 1/12 pan car.
Now we will all expecting the new comer Schumacher, Thunder Tiger, Hirosaka R/C mechanic, Power Racing/Nanda and Kyosho Nrx-18 coming with their own 1/18 scale touring by this Christmas.
http://www.hirosaka.jp/index2.html
...and hopefully Hpi, Xray and Duratrax will come up new chassis to join the game. And maybe this is time for Kawada, Calandra CRC and Corally to rethink 1/18 touring class.

that would be so awesome.......415M.....i better keep dreaming
Well, hopefully HPI will come up a new concept of the Micro RS4 II with a low central gravity single belt mounted in the middle of the chassis, slipper clutch, four wheels independent, fully adjustable drivetrain... It will be a dream car and this what drivers want.
And of course if Tamiya can make a Micro TA04 or TRF415 instead of bring back those old school buggies, then it will be great.
minijosh
07-30-2005, 03:11 AM
Since HPI started the whole trend, nobody ever thanks HPI for doing it. It's all about the off road trucks or the xray. I have a off road truck and m18 but I love my Motek RS4. HPI should follow that design. A RS4 II micro would be cool. Make it like the pro 4 or something. Make it come with threaded shocks, carbon fiber, shaft driven, and tons of bodies.
Agree. With the belt mount in the middle, it will be great. Why not we all send Hpi Racing about what we want? Driver want it, doesn't it?

Yeah it would be kewl if HPI came out with a Micro RS4 II!!!
Make it look like the new HB Cyclone TC!!!
I'm also wondering if they would be jumping into the off-road truck game? Make a Micro RS4 MT?
Or if they are thinking about making a Super Micro RS4? Like a 16th scale like the Half8?
The extra space would allow for an easier electronics layout and open up options for the drivetrain and suspension. And like Kyosho it would give them there own class again!
But with the popularity of the Savage it seems like HPI has decided to just let the micro rs4 die? You can hardly find bodies for the micro rs4 now! And on their site almost all of the bodies are listed as out of stock!
Come on HPI we all jump aboard when you gave us the Micro RS4! Now how about kicking some much needed life back into Micro On Road!!!!
I think 1/18s touring class is perfect enought especially with the Castle Creation Mamba 8000kv and the Tekin Rage 80.

ok thanks , I will be running a front one way and rear ball diff , I am hearing mix reviews about using front oneways and I am wondering if i should just go with the stock gear diff in the front . any opinions ? btw - I will be using a speed300 motor and GP1100 6pack .
I am using a ball diff front and rear.
My Mrs4 has always been powered with a Mamba motor. It tears of all stock frt. gear diff. Then I got a front one-way, it went understeer, when braking during the turn, it spinned around in circle and went out of control. Later I got a front balls diff., this thing will become loose and slipped, it was like driving a 2wd car.
Now I use a self make spool solide front shaft. It gives the car a lot of punch, very fast out of any turn, and brake under control. The most amazing is it can accelerate straight without losing control or dancing the rear end.
It was last clock it with 108km/h in 2.2s with competition setting and 7.2v.

a stock micro on 4 AA batteries is not going to do 25 to 30 mph from what I have seen personally. If I remember from the reviews of the mrs4 when it was new the stock motor 4 AA pack was doing around 15-17mph?
I ran a stock micro rs4 with a 2 cell lithium ion pack and was probably doing around 20mph I would say.
3 cell mamba setup in the micro rs4 is pretty crazy!!! the car is pretty hard to control with that kind of power.

The problem with mine was that ever now and then, after stopping or using reverse, I'd pull the trigger and the car would shudder. It would eventually go, but it just got old after a while. For just playing around, I could overlook it. But when your racing, it's hard to win a race when your car stalls out. That's why I got rid of it.
As for our car running just rear wheel drive, we've never tried it.

Motor Temp?? I just bought two micros on ebay. Spent under $150 for both RTR and got a TC3 almost RTR that needs about $50 to get back into shape. one is the rtr with a mod motor, ball dif and one-way front. the other is the kit with some crap Electronics that I swapped out for an old LRP runner and a hitec reciever so I now only need to swap crystals in my radio to have fun with..
I have run electric for a while and am getting back into the hobby after a 5 year leave. It seems that the micros tend to run WAY hotter than my Losi xxt-cr. Am I right? the motors on both my micros are pretty much untouchable after a run. I don't know the pinion size but I am running a 1100 6 cell pack in them. The 4 AA make me laugh lol. But is this normal? I am gonna get a temp gun tonight to see the exact temps they are running.

Hi..
This is just drifttires.. Dont you have the "drift control box" if you know what I mean?
oh, you mean like this: HPI D-Box (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMVE1&P=ML)
thats actually a ripp off. all it is, is a standard helicopter gyro. you could use something like this: GWS gyro (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHHS2&P=7) and get the same results. but, all the gyros do is counter steer a drift, they dont make you drift at all. so you are still better off just using the PVC tires. i use the PVC tires WITHOUT a gyro and i have TOTAL control of my drifts. its super easy to control, so i dont really see the point in waisting money on something that just "drives your car for you"

in my oppinion the Dbox really does nothing...i can drift just as good without one as i did when i had the D box for a few days..

And than u use pvc drift tires?....and only that? Can I made the tires if i have å pvc pipe and cut it than I glue it on the rims?

why not use electrical tape? IMO it works better
HPI_freak
08-21-2006, 10:26 AM
i have used both electrical tape and PVC, and PVC is WAY better. you have more control over your drifts, they last longer, and they are MUCH smoother. you will be amazed about how much you can control your drift.

When I was out running my Mrs4 this summer, I noticed it had some pretty bad on-power understeer. I am running the Team Orion Core motor, and a 6-cell pack. Would a simple change of tires or width help this? I narrowed the track but it did not help. Maybe I need some extra power (Mamba!) but I figure I should be able to have reasonable steering even with low power.

turn up the DR (Dual Rate) on your transmitter so your servo moves more. or, it could be that there is something wrong with your servo. or, try making the rear width as wide as it can go and the front as narrow as it can go.

Hope this thread's not completely dead...looks like its been a few days.
Does anyone run this Dual Link Tie-Rod Set (http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/72490.html)?
I've been looking at putting a mini servo in, and thought adjustable toe would be a nice addition to my micro. My main problem is that I can't seem to get a good definition of exactly how the servo goes in to know which "mini" servos would work. I've got an Airtronics MX-3 (1st Generation, FM was a breakthrough!) that I'd like to use with it, and any websites I find (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCYT1&P=7) don't list an Airtronics servo. What would be a good but still affordable ($20-$30) servo to put into it that'd work with my receiver?

okay well i should be getting that bluse skyline in a couple days and im probly going to make some pvc drift tires or buy some drift tires. i also could put electrical tape on them but i dont know i am just going to mess around with it. thanks for the help
HPI_freak
10-14-2007, 05:12 PM
yea, go with the one with the blue skyline body. for the batteries, those will work fine, they even have the HPI micro battery connector on it so you know its for the Micro RS4. for drift wheels; i used electrical tape for a long time. it works great for EXTREMELY SMOOTH asphalt, but anything else and it will just wear off. when i got some PVC wheels, WOW! what a differance! SO much better and more consistant drifts. just make sure you round the edges of the pvc tire. as for those "drift tires" you posted, i have never tried them, but i think they are just hard plastic and will give you the same result as the pvc tires.
Jeffy
10-14-2007, 07:06 PM
okay thanks well i ordered the blue skyline but i dont think the battery will not work because the max cell on the esc is 5 cells. and the one i posted was 6. i already have that one that i posted for my mini baja and was just wondering if i could use them since i already have them. the only other 5 cells i can find are like 30-40 dollars and i got that 6 cell for 18 but im just going to use 2500 mah AA's for a while and maybe 900 mah AAA's until my brother gets his mamba for his rustler then im going to use his esc and use those 6 cells. thanks for the advice on the tires. i will make some pvc ones. how did you make your tires?
GT Freak
10-14-2007, 09:48 PM
i have a set of 2000 and a set of 2500 aa's i use. no probs so far on the stock esc.
and i too have the skyline model.
HPI_freak
10-15-2007, 08:58 AM
i didnt make them, someone else did :) all you have to do it take one of your rims to the hardware store and find a PVC pipe that fits snug on the rim. then just cut it to the rims width. as for the battery, a 6 Cell pack WILL WORK. i have that VERY SAME car you just ordered. i have it totally stock (esc and all) and i use this pack http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMEY4&P=ML which is a 6 cell pack. the one you posted WILL WORK FINE! the stock ESC can handle a 7 cell pack (but i have never seen a manufactured one). i have used AA's before and its REALLY slow. i also used rechargeable 2500MaH batteries and it was notably faster. but when i went to the 7.2v 6 cell battery, it was FAST! no need for brushless here. a 6 cell battery back is the best upgrade you can make, and i am STILL using the stock motor!
Jeffy
10-15-2007, 06:28 PM
okay thanks yeah i will be using the 6 cell bat and i know it is gonna be fast because i use it on my stock mini baja and it is insane i also use the stock battery and it isnt half as fast. thanks

how many sets of rims did your skyline come with? And do the rims just slip on? i heard some people talking about them and was just wondering.
these are pretty darn cheap only 100 bucks. mine will be 91 after some returns
GT Freak
10-15-2007, 09:36 PM
you get 3 sets of rims with the car:
5 spoke
6 spoke
bbs style
they will come in grey.
yes they will slip right on.
theres notches on the inner rim, and tabs that mate up on the rim.
theres also different wheel widths u can use.
people will tell u to CA your tires on, follow them.

yea my rims stick pretty good. I just got my mrs4 but it took a hour for the shop to give it to me lol.
i was there and i said i ordered it and he was like okay let me go get it from the back and when he came back i asked how much it was and he said $200 and i was like no the guy on the phone said 100 and he was like okay let me check and i was waiting around for like 45 min and he came back and said that the shop bought it from hpi for 175 and they said they would give it to me for 100 Yessssss!!!!!!!.
what color is your reciever? i think i got a different one cause mine is black and it says rx-2 but the picture on the box says rx-1 and also when i turned it on it went to full so i flipped the reverse throttle and it stopped then the steering was backwards so i flipped that and now it runs fine.
my servo is croocked and the steering is off i think i might re tape it.

GT Freak

Jeffy
10-21-2007, 10:22 PM
yea i still need to fix my servo because it is turned a little and it goes left sometimes. do i need to take off the upper deck to fix this?
i dont think i will be getting a new motor soon but i just was wondering wat was the best and i think i will either go brushless or big block.
i am also making some pvc tires and i will be going to the hardware store tomorrow.
also one more question what pinion gear are you using? like the gear tooth number and the brand.
HPI_freak
10-21-2007, 10:51 PM
if you want to drift with PVC tires, the best motor to get is the stock motor. dont need to do any chassis mods to make it fit, and it has plenty of torq with a 6 cell battery pack. plus, with a stock motor, you can go pretty high for pinions for better top speed. but for drifting, i wouldnt go above 11T. for drifting, i use a Team Orion 6 cell battery pack and Team Orion 9T steel pinion ( http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKHV7&P=7 ). its a drift CHAMP!
Jeffy
10-21-2007, 11:01 PM
okay yea well i will be going to the hobby shop soon and i am going to get a robinson racing pinion because that is what they sell there.
what kind of surface do you drift on HPI freak?
i drift on smooth basement concrete. with electrical tape on the tires.
HPI_freak
10-22-2007, 06:46 AM
i drift on smooth concrete slabs that make my garage. you will still notice a major difference after switching to PVC tires, they are just better under all conditions. it IS an upgrade from electrical tape.
GT Freak
10-22-2007, 11:14 AM
yes u will have to take off the top plate to do that servo fix. its DEFinetly worth it. im not drifting with mine, just boping around in the basement.

My understanding was that he shipped the batteries charged so you could run it at college.

He did, both 1600 packs are charged and ready to go. Unfortunately I had work that needed to be completed and a meeting, so I haven't run it yet. No reason why I can't run it tomorrow! I will want to find a very smooth place to run it so I don't excessively scuff up the pristine carbon chassis.
How about I ship the batteries to you when they're discharged, you charge them and ship them back to me! eh? EH? :D twice is okay for me.
Actually this is a lie. I calibrated the Mamba, and set it to medium start power, brake only, and the most retarded (in case of *, least advanced) timing (LOL). I drove it around the carpet hallway for a minute and it is very smooth, with very minor occasional cog at startup. Even low throttle produced plenty of wheelspin, and I can tell this will really motor.

Two-month update ttt!
I have run my CF/brushless MRS4 several times on a variety of surfaces, on both low and high power settings. I tried to make it as low-profile as I could get it because I'm running the NSX body, which if I'm not mistaken allows for the least amount of electronics clearance. I tried mounting stuff on the bottom chassis plate, but it never worked out because I have the solid battery pack as opposed to the twin 3-cell tubes on either side of the chassis racers do. By using the micro servo I can change the front-rear weight distribution to alter handling characteristics, which on a micro car has a significant impact. It used to understeer even with the ball diff socked down and soft front springs, but it really carves corners with the slightly more forward battery position. I can also loosen the rear diff a little to make the rear end dig in for more consistent stability.
are these cars still available? if so where can I buy one I have one but need a second for my son

Holy zombie thread Batman! I had the thread subscribed and completely forgot about it.
As far as I know you can't buy them new (and haven't been for some time), and parts have been difficult to get (been trying to convert to the dual link steering with no success for over a year now, pretty much given up on it).
Ebay's probably your best bet, coming from someone who's done the looking around. I wouldn't recommend putting any more cash into a chassis that's only going to get harder to service though.
