From what I understand, it depends on the effect you're after. You might want to take a Coke bottle and lay down a few Red Pearl coats and then try backing it with a few different colors -- silver, gold, fluorescent white backer, bright red, etc.

I just did a body with White Pearl, and I tried backing it with a couple colors. With the silver only, it made it look kind of grayish, which was not what I was after at all. With the fluorescent white backer, it was nice and white, but it still let a lot of light through. I finally went with a couple coats of the fluorescent white backer to make the white really stand out with the pearlized finish, but then I added a couple coats of the silver to give it the opacity that I wanted.
