View Full Version : Getting CA glue off your hands

I was just finished putting a bead of glue all around one of my tires. I put it down and forgot for a split second that it had glue all over it and picked it up. Now I have like this huge black marks all over my hand that I can't get off with soap. I'm gonna feel like an idiot when I go into work tomorrow with this stuff all over me.

Mineral spirits, Ronsonol lighter fluid, and time. I've found that time works the best, (the natural oils in your hands will make it peel off after about 3 days) but if you aren't afraid of getting chemicals on your hands, then go for the lighter fluid.

Nail polish remover (acetone) works fine. Get to a well ventalated place and soak your fingers in it.

Another option that works, although not as fast - hot soapy water. Just put on the TV and soak your hands for half an hour or so, and most of the glue can be scrapped off with your fingernails.

How do I know this? Let's just say a bottle of tire glue was a little decompressed when I cut off the tip. You know that warm feeling as CA glue is dripping all over your hands... :D

I bought a bottle of CA glue remover from my local shop, cost me around $3, but it was well worth it. I actually glued my fingers together  Darn T.H. they sold me soem Super Thin CA and it went all over the place. I actually should've know better. Luckily I had bought it and never really got the chance to use it 'til now ;) Worked like a charm...after about 6-8 applications it was totally off my fingers and this was 2 days ago. Just put a couple of drops on it let it soak for 15 seconds if you are in a hurry and gently scrap off. It turns the CA into a jelly form.

another way is to get a knife , and have it like 90* like this T with the knife up and down and just like scrub it off. thats what i do. takes a few mins , depending on how much is there.

Bullfrog, don't use nitro fuel! It is readily absorbed by your skin (or any other part of your body) and can give you a bad rash. Nitro is also very poisonus, and extremely flammable.

I would use a knife either :p Of course, that's just me. I got stiches from a butter knife  Long story, but the wife won't let me live it down!

I've found a good evening of scratching usually takes about 90% of it off.

Also, while it may not be perfect by itself, using Gojo hand cleaner can help quite a bit, it has a lot of abrasives in it, it can be like what gubbs3 said, but it doesn't hurt to use..... :)

Its sad to think that we all have glue our hands together/to tires/and misc other items.

I just rub as much of the offending glue as I can and leave the rest. Its usually gone the next day.

Funny story, my brothers friend glued his thumb to a tire. weeks later his thumb was still raw and the tire probably still has his thumb print on it

Acetone is THE super-glue/CA debonder. If you've ever bought the "CA Debonder" in a hobby shop, you've bought acetone. And as stated, acetone is the active ingredient in nail-polish remover. When using the stuff, make sure you get your parents' consent, wear rubber gloves, and stay in a well-ventillated area...preferably outside.

The problem was you didn't evenly coat your hands with the CA. Next time you are building tires, first coat your hands comletely with the CA, rub them together to make sure you are getting an even coat. This forms a barrier to the marks. Hold your hands together for about 15 minutes or so, then when your hands are firmly stuck together, go ask your mom and dad for the 10 bucks for a tirer mounter.

If you think that's embarassing, it could be worse. About 5 years ago, I had an old chevy with vinyl seats. I was taking my RC airplanes out to a field to fly. I loaded everything up and ran back inside to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything I needed, and saw my brand new bottle of CA glue and a couple other things sitting on my bench. I shoved the bottle of CA in my back pocket and grabbed the other things and ran out to my car and got in. It was a really hot day and the vinyl was scalding hot. I thought my rear felt unusually warm but didn't think much of it. I got to the field and when I pulled up and started to move around, I quickly came to the shocking reaolization that my a** was glued to the seat! I sat there for a minute and people were looking at me wondering why I wasn't getting out of my car. I thought I'd just get up and rip it off and boy was I sorry. I ripped a hole in the vinyl about the size of my hand. It was really stuck on there good and since I have what my wife calls a moderately hairy rear end, it was starting to hurt. I carefully got in my car and went home and got in the shower hoping to loosen it up. The LAST thing I wanted to do was go to an emergency room. I finally got the scissors out and cut around the spot and decided to work on it from there. I used fingernail polish remover, paint thinner, gasoline, and an exacto knife and worked on it for about 2 hours. My back was very sore from being twisted around for two hours, and my a** was raw from all the chemicals, slicing and scrubbing goin on. I guess it could have been worse and I could have glued my butt cheeks together. So anyways, if you're worried about a few black smudges on your hand, just remember that it could be WAY worse. Matt

KC, I don't know if your story's true or not... but thats got to be the funniest story I've ever heard! But the big question is, how did you fix the seat? :D

KC10Chief

I didn't fix the seat. I sold the whole car for 100 bucks with a hole in the seat and all. I paid 100 for the car too. It had 295,000 miles on it when I sold it and it still ran sort of. It was a 1981 Chevy Malibu station wagon. It was yellow and had black spots from sitting outside under trees all the time. Kind of looked like a rotten banana. It was kind of rediculous when I would haul around an RC plane worth 10 times what I paid for my car. It wasn't exactly a babe magnet either. I got rear ended in it too and with the insurance money I got, I bought an 83 Olds Delta 88. Wish I had never sold that car. Matt

Great story KC10 !
Well, on the Jeep forum I hang out on, some dude got herculiner on his ... umm ... tool.
He actually posted asking how to get it off !

VERY FUNNY stuff. That thread hit like 300 with people making some of the funniest jokes I have ever read. Such fun ;)

Herculiner is this rubbery protectant stuff ... it goes on cars to protect, cover, etc

lol great story!

jeep, what is herculiner? i've never heard of it.

Speaking of getting stuff where it doesn't belong....

When I was in my 20's, I played racquet ball and played in this tourny. It was my first tourney and every part of my body hurt. This friend of mine who played college football gave me this industrial strength Icy Hot. Thats the stuff you rub on your muscles and it feels cold and then about 15 minutes later gets warm. Well this stuff gets hot. So I took a shower, rubbed this stuff on my arms and legs and then took a pee and went to bed. I was asleep for about 10 minutes when I wake up with my groin on fire. Needless to say, I had forgotten to wash my hands off before I took a leak. I spent 30 minutes in the shower trying to make it stop burning. The worst part was I was living at home to save up money to get married and my Dad walks into see why I'm moaning and see's me holding my groin. Well I tell him what I did and he just busts out laughing so hard he wakes my mom and tells her what I did and they stand outside the bathroom laughing.

those are some.. ah good stories.

I just had an incedent with CA this sunday. wasnt so bad. I spilled some on the ground when I was fixing a tire. I wasnt payng attention and I put my hand down on the same spot. Lucky for me I jumped when I felt the liquid on my hand other wise I would have glued my hand to the parking lot.
