My girlfriend got me my first RC plane for Christmas, unfortunately I live in New York City. Does anyone know of any really good places in New York or the metro area to fly without being hassled or getting the plane stuck in a tree? (which I've already done) Here are the spots I'm thinking of:

the Meadow in Prospect Park. Especially during winter, I think this might be a good spot.

Flushing Meadows.

The parking lot of Giants stadium on non-game days.

Does anyone else have any advice?

Thanks.
-John.

Ooh - Be careful if you try flying over a paved parking lot  - minor mistakes could cost you dearly!

I am also looking for a place to fly small RC planes in NYC. Why not central park on a quiet day? John, if you have found a nice place, please post.

Hello John,

I understand perfectly how frustrating it is to fly in NYC. For Park Flyers, there are many places you can fly when it is not crowded. I used to fly a Punkin Bipe at a local park near where I lived in Queens in the morning. Unfortunatelly, after about 10:00am, there would be too many people around to fly confortably.

For larger planes, especially Glow powered models, there are several AMA flying fields in NYC. I used to fly at Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn. The local club there is P.A.R.C.S "Pennsilvania Avenue Radio Control Society". But I didn't like flying there when it was crowded (especially on weekends). Since there are so many members, it is pretty hectic to fly there when there are three other guys tearing up the sky at the same time. I'm kinda spoiled now since my local club in NC has only 57 members. Check with your local club to find out about all AMA flying fields in the area (when I moved, they had just shut down the field next to the Whitestone Bridge, Bronx side). Also check out the events held at Floyd Bennet. Usually in September they have a Jet Rally with many turbine jets. Also they usually have large scale top fueler models drag racing near by!!! :D

Flying at Floyd Bennet in the evenings tends to be better because the bulk of the folks leave from a full day of flying. I used to fly several 1/2A models whithout too many hassles there after the flying activity slowed down a bit.

Just make sure that you do not interfere with the AMA locations. You should not attempt to fly using a 72mHz radio near any of the fields to ensure safety for you and for the folks at the AMA field.

Happy Flying,
Felix

If you are willing to go to NJ to the football stadium, why not hop over to Staten Island where there is an RC club. Or come out to Long Island where there are a bunch of clubs.

club locator

Remember when you use the loctor that the address provides is typically not the location of the flying field but that of one of the officers.

I belong to a glider club in Syosset. (LIRR Syosset train station is within a mile of the field) www.lisf.org is our web site. We fly sailplanes, electric gliders and low speed parkflyers.
