Is the gauge of wire I use between motor and engine control critical?

yes it is ( I tried to answer just "yes" but the forum said I had to have at least 4 characters so I changed it to "yes it is."
OK enough smart ass stuff. The wire has to be big enough for the current you will be drawing with the motor. You also need larger wire to make up for voltage losses if you are making a long run.
But most of us just take a wild ass guess. Just check to make sure the wires don't get warm/hot. And if you use connectors make sure they are big enough and that they don't get hot. Better to go straight but then it is more work.
Usually your flying buddies are a good place to start.

Hi, Flybtknight,
yes it does make adifferent on the wire size, I usualy use 14 gage on up to about 10 amps over 10 amps I use 12 gage,A good guide is to use same size as your ESC uses
