View Full Version : How Do I Paint Plastic Wheels on a TC?

I just got some foam tires for my TC3 and they have white plastic spoke wheels...

What kind of paint can I use on them? I assume some sort of acrylic? (And just use a small artist's brush?)

What is a good paint brand? (I'm thinking about painting them blue, but am open to other suggestions.)

Thanks!
R.

You can use Testors plastic model paint, then brush on a clearcoat.. :)

I would paint the sides of the spokes.

any kind of paint you use is going to chip off. Wheels can be died with Rit dye you can buy from the grocery store, but since the tires are already on them, you can't do that. You may be able to use some of the interior plastic dye for restoring full size cars. It's going to be expensive though.

Well looks as if Leadfoot beat me to it, but yea I was gonna suggest the Rit Dye as well. looks like you might be screwed on this one, cuz as he said any paint will chip and that will look worse than the white spokes. My opinion would be just use them and run them hard burn them up and have fun thn buy some new wheels and tires and ye them or buy what you like.

I was experimenting one day with an set of old rims. I had some old Tamiya paint in a can and just went crazy with it. I used a heat gun on the maximum setting and "baked" the paint on there. I haven't really run them yet but the paint looks pretty sturdy!

Just a thought...

If your willing to pay for it the best way to prepare any surface (from plastic to metal) is to use "self etching primer". It comes in a rattle can but you'll probably have to visit a quality automobile paint store to find it. This stuff is amazing since like the name suggests it actually etches itself into the surface you spray it on (including chrome and stainless steel) and unless you take a big chunk out of the plastic you won't be able to scratch the stuff off. Now if they only made self etching paints we'd be set!
