Hey.
I already have 3 radio systems, 66, 69, and 84 (for the curious).
I have 2 off road cars - 1 fer me, 1 fer the my g/f and 1 on-road electric.
I just got a new on-road gas. I was thinking about just buying a reciever in one of the frequencies I already have and 2 servos.
Here's my problem:
I looked at tower hobbies and saw that like just a reciever is going to cost me $25-$40 and about $30 for a servo (I need two $60).
That's a total of $100.
I could get a Futaba radio with 2 servos and reciever for $85.
What should I do? Is there a reason to buy these items seperately? I kind of want to get just the components so I don't have so many radios around...my family is starting to worry about my addiction and this may camoflage it.
Thanks!

If you get the $30 servo's they will preform much better than the servo's that come with the radio. What radio are u using NOW?

If you bought the transmitter and everything, you would get the el'cheapo special servos, $12 each, but when you buy seperately, you can buy the servos you want (for a bit more money) and the receiver you want too, without having another transmitter to lug around. Stop now before you have a transmitter for each car! Hehe. So either two cheap servos, $25, and a receiver, $45, plus crystal for receiver, $10. Total is $80. Or a transmitter and everything for $100 like you said + another $60 for the servos you want. If anything, you can put the transmitter on eBay and get $15-20 for it. If buying seperately though, you don't neccesarily have to get Futaba stuff, a Airtronics receiver is only $40, and Cirrus Metal Gear CS-80 servos are only $22

Ok, good enough explanation.
The servo/radio setup I'm looking for would be for a HPI Nitro RS4 2.
I currently have the Magnum Junior 2PCKA radio I'd like to transfer over.
What brands/models for the following:
Reciever
Servos
On/Off / Battery Pack
Radio (Optional)

Maybe look into a radio that has a multiple model memory so that you can use it for more than one car. The JR XR-2 is only 100 at horizon and has a two model memory. As for the servos, your stuck, I would say get the radio FIRST. Also how much wear are you going to be putting on the servos (racing, bashing etc...), i dont run nitro but you MIGHT be able to use them for a while.
hope this helps

I have yet to use it, but it sounds like it works great, Ebay!

Car_Head12,
eBay is ok. It's a crap shoot since you deal with every day people and small business people and not companies. You can seek no recourse if you are screwed on a deal. I tend to stay away from eBay and pay the price for assurance.
Is Airtronics the top radio company? That's the feeling I'm getting. I have 3 Futabas that I have no problem with, but then again. I've never tried any other. Come on pros, I need some advice...
Thanks!

Ok, here's another question:
Can you mix brands on recievers and radios?
I'm thinking of getting an Airtronics radio that comes with receiver and servos that is chan 84. I already have another car that's got a chan 84 futaba receiver.
Will they work together properly? I know you're not supposed to run on the same chan as someone else at the track, but is it more because you can control someone elses car or because it goes bonkers from mismatched brands?

Someone please respond. I have not been able to find the answer to this.

Animeking you can just buy the system and you sould be able to choose the channel you want or buy some other sets of crystals b\c at the track you will probably run into the problem ofsome one having the same channel
hope this helps.

That doesn't clearly indicate whether or not I can mix transmitters and receivers. Can I use an Airtronics Transmitter (Chan 84) with a Futaba receiver (Chan 84) and have it work well?
