Hows this hobby doing right now, do ya think?
Are we growing or expanding? True, there needs to more regulation in racing so as to keep it fair, but I think its attracting people. Oh yah, there need to be some spec classes, so as people aren't limited by their wallets.

I think the hobby is definitely growing, in my area anyway. Every year there seems to be more people at the club races my LHS sponsors. I agree with you about the need for spec classes, in answer to that, we have started running a Legends class. Low-tech can be very cool.
