Hello there. I'm new to this sport, and have just order a HPI RS4-2. Seeing as it hasn't come in yet, and i have to build it when it does, i decided to hold off on buying a radio just yet. I think im going to go with an FM for sure. Which brands are the best around, i read a lot about Airtronics, and Futaba. I don't really want to go over $200. Can i get a pretty decent FM radio for that amount of money?? Give me some makes and models. Tell me some pros and cons about them as well.

Thanks in advance

Dave :)

You can get an awesome radio for that price. The JR XR3, Futaba 3PDF, KO Propo EX-11, and the Hitec Lynx 3d. For a little more, you can step up to the amazing KO Propo EX-1 Mars or Airtronics M8 radios.

However, since this is your first car, why do you want to spend $200 on a radio. Sure, it will last you forever, but who says you are going to stay in the hobby long? And you won't use 75% of the features of a top-end radio. I suggest you say money and buy a sport AM radio system, such as the Airtronics Blazer ($50). If doesn't have an LCD feature or any fancy features, but it's got all the stuff you'll need and use a lot.

Thanks for the info. The reason i want to spend that much money is because 1, it won't be MY money someone else is getting for me, AND when i get into a hobby, i like to try and jump towards more advanced equipment, so that 2 weeks later, im not saying, i shoulda got this, or i should got that. But thanks for looking out for my financial welfare!!!

thanks again

Dave

Id go for the JR XR2 (its AM though). You can pick one up for $99 and it hac all the fetures Youll need for a while. If you want to go FM you can get a JR XR3 for about $160. Ive had both and they do a good job untill you drod them off the drivers stand.

Dmorin74: Good thinking! My friend did what Obi suggested (get "beginner" radio) and I agreed with him..he might not have liked the hobby. 2 months later, he's got 3 cars, 2 Futaba Magnum's and cursing himself for not getting an XR3 or something. :) I sorta did the same thing...I bought 2 XR3's (not at the same time though) instead of 1 R-1 and well...now I have 7 cars (will be 8 when I buy Sasoon's XX4!)...3 for outdoor, 3 for indoor and 1 for plain old BASHING!! An R-1 is in my near future :)

well since you did'nt specify which type of car it is(nitro or electric) i'd get an fm for nitro am for electric. here's a rule of thumb: nitros have way more interference and more metal as well. i'd definitly buy a starter radio and then when you buy your next vehicle make it a ready to run with a really good radio. i did the same thing myself and am not disappointed in the hooby or anything. i personally own a Z10(FOR SALE) 2 RS4 MT's(FOR SALE), TMAXX, and the newest edition to the obsessed hobby is the GS Storm buggy. the only good thing is that i can use the radio in the GS for my Maxx(with a receiver) and have a good quality system. well good luck and if i we're in your shoes i would've bought a storm buggy cause it's awesome.

Ok, I have no problem with you jumping in. I've been using a sport radio for three years now, and haven't had the need for a new one (though I'll probably upgrade over the summer).

If you want a good, computerized FM radio for under $200, I suggest the Lynx 3d. It has a gazillion features, a huge LCD screen, and a 10 model memory. It's not as good as an M8, but it's like $70 cheaper.
