Board, first off, read THIS (http://www.rctech.net/articles/painting_hauntedmyst.shtml). It'll take you through all you wanted to know, all you needed to know, and things you really didn't think you needed to know until after you read it.
If you have questions after this, feel free to post. For the record, I use Pactra paints. A lot of other folks on here use Faskolor. Either are great paints to use, because they're specifically designed for polycarbonate. Thinner for pactra is typically laquer thinner. For the acrylics, go with water.

Go ahead with Faskolor paints, they are water based and you can remove it easy if you make a mistake, remember to add a final acrilic coat to protect the water based paint.

Please pardon my ignorance, but I thought Faskolor paints were acrylic? What do you use for a backing coat to protect the paint? TIA!

Faskolor is acrylic. Z should have said lacquer....which isn't always good. If you have sprayed chrome anywhere on the body you can't use laquer as a final coat. It will eat it up and dull the finish. Faskoat works great as a sealer. If you don't like the sticky residue, back faskoat with laquer. Be sure the Faskoat layer is adequate, even, and dry! :D
Paul, start out with one of the Faskolors. Or if you have a craft store nearby, Createx textile paint is the same thing only cheaper. They also make the AutoAir line which carries some pretty cool colors designed for 1:1 cars/ helmets, etc. Do an internet search for either and you can find the createx/ autoair websites.
