MY motor runs way too hot with the stock gearing so I thought id fool with the gearing alittle.

If the stock gear has an even number of teeth "20" do I have to stay with even numbered pinions?

I saw even and odd sets on tower.

Electric n00b.

No, you don't have to stick with even #'s of teeth. I don't know why they sell even and odd sets...must be some reason. Make sure to reset the pinion/spur mesh when you change pinion sizes.

What motor are you using, what car do you have, and what is the stock gearing? If its the motor that came with the car, check for binding and make sure the gears aren't meshed too tightly.

no, but make sure that the pitch is the same , RED

It is the DTX delphi indy car.
The pitch is 48,pinion 20 tooth,spur 72 tooth.
Photon speed 20 turn motor.

We bought these cars for some CHEAP spec racing this winter on the carpet.
It claims 32 mph out of the box so Im pretty sure they geared the snot out of it to get these numbers. In a big enough parking lot I think it does all of that.

Carpet is a different story, I cant open it up and the motor is under constant load,I think this is the heat problem.

Mesh is fine. I learned the hard way with my nitro trucks.

Im thinking of going down a tooth at a time until it works the way I want it to.

Is this right thinking?

Thanks for any information,

I would get a bunch of different pinions. Get the even and the odd set.

I would drop the pinion 2 teeth and go with that if you plan on using that 20t motor, RED

Yeah, thats what Im going to do.

Thanks,

The reason there are odd and even pinion numbers is to give you some range in getting the right ratio for your use. If 20 is too high, 18 may be too low while 19 is the ideal range. For carpet racing you generally use a roll out formula based on motor's power, track size and changes in tire diameter. Excessive motor heat could also be caused by undergearing as well as overgearing. If this is a track where you are running oval, check with the guys racing stock or those in the 19turn class to see what they are using as a gear ratio. Most will tell you their rollout (2.28, 2.48 etc) just use that number and divide you spur by it that should give you the pinion needed. That motor generally produces power like a Monster Stock2 stock motor so to get it up to speed you may need to gear up a little. Certain motors generate more heat than others so temperature isn't always the ideal method of determining gearing - look at how vehcile accelerates and gets up to speed on the straights. If it seems to still be building speed as it reaches the end of straight it's overgeared, if it seems to build speed but lays over or bogs it's undergeared.
