So, no body has a crawler?
4wdmt
10-05-2004, 11:29 PM
well, i have a gecko 2 clod. im not a hardcore crawler myself, it has a SR powered by a 6cell stick batt. stock motors with stock gearing. rear steering lock out. bumper, servo plate and linkage at front by thunder tech. cirrus hi torque servo w/ hd servo saver by kimbrough. puller tires on stock white wheels capped of by hpi jeep body. how about you?
actually, lots of people here own clods and txts, i think they just post on the seperate treads.

Here's my modified Pajero, soon to have the front diff locked. Already has rear diff lock, bearings, oil shocks all round (3" at the front 3.5" at the back), custom 4 link setup, cut tyres (not pictured), Graupner Speed 600 motor and electronic speed control.

Oh man, I need that. Is the drive sealed? How long did it take you to make? Do the tires rub? How do you make it? I NEED it. I'm assuming it not finished, the body doen't appear to be mounted and there is no battery. What a great fun car.
Greg_Hager
12-26-2004, 12:43 AM
Yep, drivetrain is completley sealed. As for the tires, they might rub as of right now, but I won't know for sure until I have the body mounted. If they do, they shouldn't when I get the wheels for it (the ones on it are borrowed) becuase they're a greater offset and should pull the tires in a little bit. Here's the chassis info::
TLT-1 Axles
Maxx Turnbuckle Four Link
Maxx Shocks
HPI 2.2 Wheels and Tires
Stampede Center Transmission
ElectriFly T-600 Ferrite Motor
HPI Rubicon Body painted Tamiya Racing Green and Black
Chassis is two Thunder Quake shock towers with Savage reinforcement posts to hold them apart.
Greg_Hager
12-26-2004, 12:49 AM
Well, I say the drivetrain is sealed, but I just remembered there isn't a cover over the spur/pinion gears. Other than that, there's nothing open. :)

Manny manny moons ago my wife was going to another city with my sister in law to do some shoping "We live in the boonies" Anyway I told her to stop by the LHS and pick me up a car, nothing specific realy just somthing she thought would be nice to add to my collection. The HPI RS4 MT is what she came home with. The truck in the picture is one of the first MT's to hit the shelf and its still runing strong. It is curently my oldest R/C "Other than my frog" Anyway all I have broken on it is one suspention arm and a rear belt. I have snaped several pins in the spur shaft while crawling but that is becasue of me using substandard parts. I like the truck to but I think its almost time to eather retire it to a shelf or traid/sell it and upgrade to some new technology

we talking mini or mini t?
Tried a mini T with a brushless 400 on 8 cells and its insane... or should I say too quick.
Also tried a mini with a 7 turn single 540 and that is also pretty nuts. Changing it to a brushless shortly.

thats a nice tuber maxxdrive. i just picked up a nylint and amcustom doing a 4-link and a lot more ..i want to mount maxx shocks also. i wish i could afford a clod with a gecko or rcgut,or clodzilla chassis but ill have to make due..if anyone really wants to learn about crawlers..go to rccrawler.com and you can learn a whole bunch in no time..ive been a menber for about a month and know all the tricks and mods and best things and how articulation isnt always the best thing in some situations and a bunch more..i learned what good crawlers look like and ive learned how to build...ALSO they have some members on that forum who have soo much patience and skill that they can take like..old toys and make good stuff outah them..some get models(the kind that you glue together and paint) and put like..xmod axles or something on it and make a 4-link or something and make it crawl..the sky is the limit. keep on truckin

What about using a E-Maxx for a crawler?
awnelson
12-29-2006, 08:17 AM
You can use E and T-Maxx chassis to crawl, but the best way for them to work was to have the arms locked down and pivots on the chassis. In order for crawlers to work well, they need direct opposed pressure on each axle. As one tire comes up on an obstacle, it uses the full weight of the chassis to push with an equal pressure on the other tire causing a better contact patch. When you have independent suspension in a Maxx, it lifts a tire and transfers the weight to the other three tires. This can cause a truck to shift backward and reduce the effectiveness of the front tires. So, to answer the question, yes but it will make a poor crawler.

I bought a used Clodbuster in good shape with lots of extras for $215.00
Original Clodbuster
Futaba radio, servos and reciever.(Decent radio but will upgrade)
Novak EVX ESC 14.4 volt speed controller (worth about $80 - $100 itself)
2 - 1500 mah batteries (Will be replaced with twin 3200's)
Some other stuff like shocks and extra bodies.
First I will be looking to upgrade the gearing and motors
Then, a frame but I think I am going to try and build my own first.
Question. I saw a post on how to build your own chassis but cant find it. Does anyone know of the post or a post with illustrations on how to build your own chassis? Tools and supplies needed?
Thanks,

Well, I got my clod. it was in sad shape, but for the price I paid for it, I am willing to clean it up.
I just ordered my ESP Clodzilla Chassis kit and will begin to assemble it when it arrives. I ordered the servo kit to place a servo on each axle, bearing kit and shocks.
I'll need other parts and will list them as I continue this build.
I'll post pictures as I continue with this project.

Well, I have been working here and there on my project and here are some pictures.
I still have to install the motors and the electronics.
I need to buy batteries and a charger and paint the boday.
I am going with Integy 55 turn motors and a Novak speed controller.
I still need to upgrade the shocks from the stock ones.
I want to get some better rod ends than the stock ones.
I am going to do a really nice paint job on a brand new body I purchased and will do an ok paint job on the old body but won't care if it gets beat up.
I am going to my buddies shop to see about making mounts for the servos for each axle to use with this chassis. I can't find any that will work because of the shock mount location. So, we are going to make better ones and servo mounts.
We are also going to work on making some custom cases to put the batteies in. I want to mount then to the top of the frame to be hidden under the body but might have to mount them lower because I dont want to raise the center of gravity.

Heres my crawler, a stock nylint scorpion. I'm looking to sell it because I don't have any rocky areas around me.

one question. i keep seeing that people are using TLT axles, but when i go to tower hobbies and stuff i see its a 1/18 crawler... are you guys using 1/18 crawler axles with 1/10 wheels and 1/8 bodies or an i getting something wrong?

Balang, you're not too far off. Basically it's 1/18 axles, and a stretch chassis to give it a 1/10 stance. Some use wideners to get a wider width, but stock axles look very scale under a body.
