View Full Version : What got you into R/C?
What sparked your fire and got you into R/C?
Me and my friend kept racing and racing our Nikko cars at the local park forever. Then we went to a hobby shop to look at trains, and the R/C car section cought our eye. we stayed there for 3 hours talking and talking to the people there about getting into it. Then I wanted a sledgehammer, and my friend wanted a Stampede. The worker said that the sledgehammer was a bad truck, and I should get the Rustler or Stampede. I got the Rustler, while at the same time, my friend got a Stampede, both for X-Mas 5 years ago. I thought it was the fastest thing alive, and I spray painted my body a see-through blue, and brushed on a red color. Took me 3 weeks to do that...Those were the days.

As far back as I can remember, I have always liked cars, both real and unreal cars(prototype models, concept cars that never made it). I would always get those Nikko and Ertl Radio control cars, they were fun, but I liked the detail. Until one day an Uncle of mine visited from out of town and brought his RC10, It was awsome, I had the confindance that mine could beat his, I guess you know what happened. I ended up here with a good amount of old and new electric and nitro cars. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/cool.gif

There first thing i can remember about rc was when my brother was painting the body of his rc10 once it dryed i watched him use it. That thing was fast! After that i just bought nikos tycos and rs cars, but i always wanted "the kind that you build". I went around looking for them but no one ever had them. About 2 years ago my brother came to visit and i asked him if he still had it. He went out to get it, he brougt back the car a few batery packs and a charger and told me i could keep it. He said he got them at tower hobbies. After playing around with it a while i wanted one of my own so i looked on the internet for tower and i picked out a xxx. Thats how i got interested in rc.

Well since I was a little kid I had 3 nikko cars. My neighbor had a real R/C car. I was always amazed by howfast it was. He and I are the same age. When I was 9 or 10 he let me drive it. I was hooked. I loved it. Then my friend and I were talking about how it would be cool to have an R/C carrier and an R/C plane. Ever since that I wanted a boat. I got a boat for X-mas and then I really got into cars. My first R/C car was a XXcr KE and I just recently got a XXX

WELL, i love telling this story, it never gets old, i have had the little nikko, tyco, and that kind of car since i was 4, then, during my 5th grade summer year, we went to my cousins, he had a Team Losi LXT, and that thing was the coolest that i have ever seen, he had it all, matched packs(the red 1400's), tires, all the springs, you know, taht stuff, and he let me drive it, i was hooked on how stinking fast it was! My dad told me about his old hornet that he still had that the reciever pooped out on. When we got home, he pulled it out, and the old Tamyia 1200 camel hump pack was still with it, and we took it to my hobby shop, because it needed new front tires(of course, they had none that size for the stock wheels, and we ordered some, also, we picked up a pack of AA's for the reciever pack(no BEC)and the remote, my dad turned it on for fun, and IT WORKED! after years, the reciever was just WET! I was rallying it later that day, and never stopped, til right around christmas time, it stoppped working again(now i realize, the pinion just fell off) but i asked for a new one, another Nikko that i saw at the store taht was soooo cool(it as a truck) when christmas rolled around, there was no boxes that shape http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/frown.gif i was getting pretty bummed, then my parents went out of the room, and brought a package back, but, it was not the right box, i opened it, and there is was, a STAMPEDE! Blazign fast 20 turn motor(whatever that meant) independent suspension, who knows what that is? who cared, it had big tires. My dad bought the kit(way to go dad! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif ) and we spent the next day building the whole thing.
that was the best day ever. Now, my parents do not know what they have sparked, and i am sure that they wish they did not, I now have all of my cash/time/and thought into this hobby, and i always like to inform people what this hobby is about, and how they can get into it. I have owned 5 hobby class cars, and i am currently with a XXX and a rustler, i am paying my way through, and mom and dad jsut stand back and watch. this summer, i found something better than just regular RC, this summer I started racing, and that has just boosted a huge part of my RC thoughts, finally, no more just smacking around RS's in front of my house, i am around guys that care about this hobby as much as me

I had always been into cars, both RC and real. I always had to have one of the Nikko, Tyco, etc cars. Last year I was just messing around and was playing with this old GI Joe RC buggy that I have had for years. My friend mentioned the "real" RCs, and we decided to look into it. He bought an electric Rustler and I got my HPI nitro MT. Bought the BX to mess around with, and my most recent purchase was a T-Maxx http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

My story is not too much different from all the others. It starts off with that great tyco or nikko little radio shack car that was fun to just bash around and race your friends who had the same, then watch them go psycho because they have the same frequency. I had some little junker when I was 5 or 6 and when I got to america I got a nikko truck, that kept me content for quite a while till I strippped half the gears and I burnt out the heat sinc. Well if you cant get the real or the RC thing, the next best thing? VIDEO GAMES. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I was hooked on games such as Hardcore 4X4 and Gran Turismo. My parents said to get out and do stuff outside, but they couldnt tear me away from cars, namely the games. So I struck a deal with my mom and she said she'd buy me a car, nothing too expensive though. So I looked and found Traxxas, couldnt decide between the rustler or 4-tec, decided I had had my fun with offroad and took he 4-tec. So I worked off my debt and just bash that thing around on my coldesac, it of course receives challenges to races, of course my car is 3 times as fast as the 8 year old running as fast as he can http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. Next stop is off-road, I am saving for a XXX-T and when I get it I am taking it to my LHS and racing with my friend.
Joy be to R/C.

This makes me feel old but when I was a kid I was more of the "stay home and read" than the "go out and play" type.
I always enjoyed model trains (had an enormuos layout and loved reading Model Railroader) and I was constantly messing with stuff to make it better and had quite afew projects published in Model Railroader even when I was 13. My Mom and Dad got me a mild hobby class R/C for Christmas as another thing to fidget with. It was identical to an RC10 on the outside but had the standard Nikko equipment on the inside. I learned how to drive that car around the house and completely wore it out. By then I had money to buy one of numerous Nikko cars and eventually outgrew about a half dozen of them. Although not once did they break on me, I just got sick of the limited capability.
On Christmas I somehow got a Tower catalog and saw the gorgeous Kyosho Raider Pro buggy. Man that thing looked cool. So my Mom took me to the LHS and when I saw that Raider box on his shelf I just about flipped my lid. My mom said that that car would be my Xmas present and that I would have to buy the rest of the stuff on my own. I built the car (well over a week of frustration as I went it alone in the basement with model railroading tools no less) and finally had the buggy ready to go. The LHS sold me a Hobbico 905 charger and two Duratrax 1400 battery packs, and a Futaba 2pk radio with Futaba ESC.
I drove that poor Raider into the ground. Those packs got used so much in all these years but never gave up. I actually wore out the 540 motor! As if the buggy didn't date me enough I got my first "competition motor" the Trinity Slot Machine. I installed this motor and couldn't believe how fast this car was. It blew my mind and everyone on the block new I had the coolest toy in history.
I got out of R/C for a few years as girls and high school sports became more important. Then came the military service, and moving out of the parents and so forth. The Raider sat in a box for many a year until I rejoined the R/C hobby as a way to pass the time. Upon finding the Raider in the box it felt like seeing an old friend. I was happy and couldn't wit to restore her to her glory.
I still have the Raider Pro and am in the process of restoring it as I type this. Parts are hard to find but it will be all worth it when it sits gleaming on the display case as the retired grandpappy of my R/Cs. I even have a new in box Slot Machine waiting to go into it. Heck she deserves it. (sniff sniff)

Well the story is im at the local county fair u know the one that comes around 4th of july and i see a booth in the distance with a guy playing with a rc stadium truck he was showing off his rc club that he had formed so i walk up, talked to him for a while and he gives me his tower hobbies catalog so i hung out with him for a while and man was his truck fast he had a midnight 2 pro in it (well i thought it was fast) then he asked me if i wanted to try it. I was nervouse as he11 so i got the hang of it by doing some slow figure 8ts then he said i could open it up full throttle so i did,man having the feeling of that much power made me feel invinsible i just wanted to go all out with that thing luckily i have a good outlet to distrubut my crazyness. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/tongue.gif so then he brought me back to his truck and he had tons of these cars and trucks!I flipped out then my parents said we had to leave http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/frown.gif so that was that i had a tower mag and the money to buy a truck so after a long time of waiting to get my truck finnally i got it around x mas my trusty ole tower hobbies nitro st 15!by the way im hooked and imma get another car in feb. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I've tried to take girlfriends and other girls that were friends to the slot car track but thanks to the "eye ogling" and the rude comments they didn't want to stay.
A lot of the guys you see at the track are the "30 years old living at home with mommy" kind of guys.
The types that have no idea that the "mullet" hairstyle went out years ago, and that just driving a 5.0 Mustang doesn't make you cool. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Back in 88, a friend and I had Nikkos, we ran them against the annoying little creep up the street all the time. Well, Christmas came, and we had found out about the kits at the hobby shop, and had out moms get them for us. I got the Tamiya Striker buggy, he got the Tamiya Lunchbox monster van. I loved that buggy. It is funny now that I thought that the stock 540 motor was fast, ah, the good old days.

Me and my little brother used to race each other in our alley behind our house, he must have been 5, and i was around 9. We both had tyco cars, until his got ran over. That was the end of that, for about 2 years. On down the road our house got broke into and a couple necklaces, a watch, and a little tv were stolen. This sounds funny, but thanks to the robbers, im now racing 1/10th tc (HPI Nitro RS4 racers) Thanks u bad guys, http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif. Anyway, my dad got around 400.00 from insurance and had been wanting a Clodbuster for a while. So, whos needs a tv in there room?? About a week later he went to the hobby shop and got his clod buster, that was back in 1992. After he got his clodbuster, he started buying this magazine called radio controlled car action(duh!!). I would read them from time to time, never really know what i was reading. Then, we went to take a trip to the hobby shop(my first time in a hobby shop), and i saw a tamiya target scotch indy car. And it just so happened, it was close to my birthday. So i got the car, me and my dad built it, and i drove it for a while, then(u wont beleive this), it got ran over. Well, now what, i forgot about the hobby again, until about a year later, next car was a xx-t. After about a year of that, got a parma hemi coupe. Got tired of those two, and sold them. Electric was no fun for me. So about 3 years ago, i got a traxxas rustler. I wont downgrade traxxas or anything, but that truck, just did not like me. So, sold it and got a HPI nitro rs4 racer. Now i finally found something i like. Currently, i have 3 racer's. HPI's the best. And, still, to this day, my dad has got his clod buster. It is all aluminum and steel and has got 2 monster mash motors, and a sassy chassis. Im 18 now and the only reason im still in the sport is because of my dad. Mom and step-dad would love to burn my cars now because its all i ever do, but they cant, im 18, hahaha. Bad news though, my racer 2 got ran over.........by my little bros tmaxx, http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif.

I collect die cast metal cars from everywhere I've been. Being in the Navy that's a alot of places. Well while here in Japan an old retired Army guy asked me if I new anyone interested in buying a R/C truck. He said it was big and taking a lot of room as he had many. I told him I was interested as I always wanted one just to play with. He said he wanted $50.00 for it. It turned out to be a Tamaya Juggeraut. Well taken care of, in very good condition. After running the truck, I was hooked. Now that I found this forum, I'm really hooked!

Well, as I said in the "First Car" thread, I got what I think is a LaTrax car 22 years ago, then progressed into higher grade vehicles shortly after that. I then went to Work of Air Age a few years later. What got me into it? I've always loved tinkering with stuff. I used to take apart everything in the house (much to the dismay of my mother, because I could never get those clock springs put back together). I'm just one of those people that has to know how everything works. I love the challenge of building and tuning cars for maximum peroformance. Actually putting that to use on the track is an even greater challenge. I think it's a lot like golf - you never quite master it, you just keep getting better with more experience and practice.

I started out with Tycos, the Tyco Wild thing was my first R/C car, which i still have, but the motor burnt out. Yeah, so between then and last year all i really had was a bunch of Tyco cars. Then in October of '99 i saw the Shootout of Nitro Trucks in RCCA at chapters, i picked up the issue and bought it. I probably read it a 100 times, and I decided to buy a Nitro Rustler, and that was my entry into the real world of R/C. Along the way I've gotten a T-Maxx for free, (hehe :P) from my friend, but I sold it to my Dad so I could buy stuff for my Rustler. Now I'm looking to buy either a Mini Z or a Nitro 4tec so I can start racing. Thats my story ^_^

well for me it starte with seeing my freinds dads monster beetle,i loved the way it flew over the dirt.then we over at my friends house,he just bought a new fx10(i doubt people even remeber this car) well after building it,he let me drive his old grasshopper2,it was a blast, not real fast though, flash forward a few years, the fx10 is sitting in the bottom of the a lake, and this one guy had a jrxt who wanted to race, well my freind pulled out the trusty grasshopper, which by this time was showing its age,the front of the chassis was held to gether with plaster of paris, the electronics were melted,to the chassis.but inder neath this rough exterior lurked the now infamous reedy modified, well the grass hopper outran the jrxt with an embarassing lead.then the grasshopper was forgotten, then one day i traded a pet python i had for the whole grasshopper set up,i drove it for a few months after wards, then i broke it someway and let my freind have it back,he wanted to make some kinda air boat out of it.this was around xmas time, and he got a new schumacher, back came the rc fever again, but alas i had 25 bucks to my name,we called up the hobby store to inquire of thier used vehicles, and to my luck there was a battered and bruised ayk? pro radiant, luckily my grandma was visiting and she bought the radio and charger,so i took home my wonder new car, slapped te batteries in and boy was it ever fast, made such a nifty noise too, chain driven four wheel drive.somwhere down the line,i ruined a differential, and bought my first brand new vehical,a team losi jrt, lasted for many a fine year, only probelm was my speed controler took a dump, and i stripped the rear wheels,of course all this happend two days after my bearing purchase.,about 6 more years pass,i move to maimi with my wife, one day out of bordem i pick the now bodyless, dust covered jrt,and deicede to leave it in its dust covered glory, and bought my new mini cooper, well it still sucked because the speed controllers was on the fritz,i bought a tekin rebel, what a difference!well my mini has the habit of stripping a gear, ive went through 2 sets,on my third now.well in the interim, while waiting for my gears ti ship out,i transfer motor, and everything to the jrt,buy some buggy wheels and tires all round, drives better than orignal, then on night,i nicked the raingutter with the front a arm, shattered the arm,and the left side of the front of the chassis.so now im basically car less,my mini is back in operation,as mean as i ever was, just got the new parts yesterday.
whew long story i know, but i love to reminiss about the good days,in fact thats proball why i bought the mini, nice to have a tamiya around at anytime,i think my next car will be a vintage rc10,with the gold chassis,i always wanted one back in the day,
