I would talk to Fuller's Fast Electrics on the hardware, as they specialize in what you're working on. Is the 540 you're referring to out of a car, also, how many turn is it? As for the flexshaft, I would recommend a .125(1/8") for a boat that small. Speaking of size, why so small? It really has me curious, as something that small is going to need water like glass to be able to run at all. The 1/12th Buds, at 27" have a hard time with chop anything much over 1/2". To go larger still, 1.5" waves are almost too much for the big 1/8th scale hydros, and they are 42 to 54 inches long!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this doesn't happen often, but i'm going to have to disagree with HJ on something...i'd say go with a wire drive instead of the flex cable. here's a few links to look at:

fuller's fast electrics: http://www.drcwebservices.com/ffe/default.htm
climate models: http://www.climatemodels.com/
fine design: http://www.finedesignrc.com/

those three sites have just about all the info you'll need. there's also places like BBY and a few others, but those are the three that i'm most familiar with. at 13" that's going to be a tiny boat. HJ's right about needing glass. especially with a rigger that small. another thing, you're going to need the LIGHTEST stuff you can possibly get to go inside, i.e your RX and servos. sounds like a fun project, hope to hear how it turns out.

Doc!!!!!!!!!!!!HOW DARE YOU DISAGREE WITH ME :D I mean really, a wire drive? Are we talking 20, 22 or 26 guage :D

Okay just kidding, I assume you are referring to 1/8" music wire? Don't know of any props, drivedogs and such smaller, do you?

i have a wire drive on my 6-cell rigger. it's a .063 wire. one end is bare for the collet to grab and the other has the stub shaft attached. i got the wire with the stub shaft and teflon and a drive coupler from climate. they're pretty strong. team Jags was using a wire drive when they sent that 32 cell rigger into the 120's. they also reduce drive line loss and allow the motor to free up a bit. there's a noticable difference between a wire and flex cable. one thing...make sure you ask for the drive dog when you order! i forgot to ask for one and i just happened to have a spare.

ok thnx a lot u guys. the boat is so small cause it is a kit micro hydro. i think i am goin with a 400 size motor and 7 cells (AA) as that seems to be a popular run on this boat. and again on size it is for a micro rigger class so it will be run on glass all the time. thnx

oh and just fyi next time i am doin a scat cat26 due to i need a lake boat. my electro vee just got trashed so i need a new lake boat. thanks a lot

Peace

HJ, this is what the business end of a wire drive looks like, just in case you were wondering. i know in the 1/8 business you don't play around with little stuff like this.

You're right, all 3/16" shafts or flex drive. But then again, we also use .67s and 45+mm props. Some of the 1/6th boats are using 1/4" stuff with the big Zens
