How long do I boil a set of offroad tires to get the glue to seperate?

I just did that for the 1st time, it took about 1/2 hr & still had to yank on the tire a little.

OK, Please forgive the stupid question. I am new to this hobby. Why do you want to get the glue to separate anyway? I’m having a hard enough time just keeping my tires glued to the rims after a couple of back yard bashes…

mj- he's trying to get the tires off to put a new set on , boiling does work after about 1/2 hour , i did this for a while most of the time you still have some rubber/glue stuck to the rim.

here's a better way , cut most of the tire off the rim and remove foam insert and put in acetone overnight (can be purchased at walmart etc.) then just pull the mounting bead part of tire off rim , rim will be clean of tire and glue , CATION acetone is flammable so don't set by hot water heater or house furnace etc. and put in a container with lid to keep fumes in , i use a large coffee can w/lid , this works on most rims , i heard it don't work on plastic rims that are chromed i heard it messes them up , i know it works on AE , Losi , Kyosho rims , they all have a high nylon content and doesn't hurt them at all , i have some rims i've been using for years.

mj- to get your tires to stay on rim , clean rim and tire mounting area with alcohol , and use a quality cyanoacrylate glue avail. at hobby shops , let glue cure then recheck them by pulling at the bead and anywhere that the tire is not glued properly put some more glue in there , the tire won't come off , i perfer glues that have a medium thickness , i don't like the thin glues.

What if you want to keep the tire?? The rim is shot but the tire is brand new...well 20 minutes of run time on them

MJ- One thing that wasnt mention when gluing, make sure that even pressure is distributed around the ENTIRE wheel and tire. If not you could have high and low spots, What works good are zip ties and rubber bands, for touring wheels, not so sure bout off road, but it might still apply. I found the easiest way to do it is to do one side of each tire first and then go back and do the other sides of them after the first has dried.

On another note, how'd you do that to your rim?!

You can apply CA debonder liberally to ge tthat tire off, but usually if the rims is that bad the tire will just tear and the only thing you couold recover is the insert.

does boiling the tire have any ill efects on the wheel, like make it softer? you would think it would.

Thanks for all the advice. After looking at my wheels, I bet the reason I’m loosing my tires is because I did not boil them or use acetone before gluing them back on. I have been gluing my tires back on to dried glue and rubber shreds. No wonder they fall off...

It's from a ta03rs. Me and another guy were running around the parking lot when he whacked me head on. He has a ta03r with a front bumper that looks more like a battering ram! The impact shattered the rim. Teach me to run without the body on!

Bringing this thread back from the dead.... I just did my ofna wheels for 10 minutes and that ddint do anything at all.. Im gonna go give em 30 more. Anyways, this may sound stupid, but does the material in the rim have anything to do with the heat breaking up the glue? I used some crappy walmart super glue to get these on the rims and am wondering if mabye the old boil trick wont work with my wheels or this glue.... Anyone else useing crappy walmart super glue and ofna wheels have any problems? These things are absolutely nailed to these rims!!

Actually in response to your questions to save the tire and get the old broken rim off is:

1. Submerge the tire and rim in acetone over night. Be sure to follow all safety measures using this product.
2. After you take the tires off the old rims in the morning dry them good and spray them with simple green mixed at 1:3 parts with water. The rubber will be almost as good as new for feel and conformity.

Don't boil rims that have already been dyed. Like i had a set of Losi truck rims that were neon yellow......i put one in the water for about a 1/2 an hour and it lost its color and look ugly.

Now it just looks like a weak yellow.
