I got extremely bored, and saw my traxxas just sitting there with a beater motor in it. So I decided to make a y harness in series, and used two 1500s along with the 540 sized 17x2 havok motor. Also, I shoved some meaty slicks on the back. Still have yet to run it, due to the diff being WAY too loose. But I did test it just holding it. One tire literally came unglued it was ballooning so much...:D Please tell me what you think! (I know, it's messy. I'll clean up the wiring eventually... )

Edit- Seems I forgot the pics!

Duct tape and Tamiya plugs... good combo for power lol

what ESC are you using, and how well do you think it'll hold up to the voltage?

ElectricThunder

The duct tape is just for insulation. It's all soldered together...I just couldn't find my stupid roll of electrical tape to cover the solder joints.. :p And yes, I'm using tamiya connectors. Why ruin perfectly good deans plugs? :D I think they'll hold up just fine as long as I don't get on the throttle hard for too long.

Cian- I'm using a duratrax Streak. I figure it'll hold up just fine. All manuafacturers underrate their ESCs so they don't have to deal with blow outs from people pushing the limit. So in reality...this things limit is probably about 12-14 cells (instead of the 10 stated from duratrax). I added the extra heat sinks to dissipate heat better, so that'll probably help with the extra voltage as well.

You have inspired me...ive been sitting on my butt all day and i think i will give your idea a shot. Only with an msc cuz i dont wanna fry my esc :) Very nice et!

Thanks bro. What are YOU going to put your insane voltage in? :D Maybe this should be the "double the voltage in your RC and see what happens" thread! hehehe..

Here's another pic. Input is definitely appreciated BTW.

My first attempt was unsucsessful :( its dark out and all i saw was something sparking then it stopped  lol Everything still works though, so im gonna try something different.

TrickSpeed

Maybe the sparks were just the motor brushes?

If your gonna run more voltage than suggested, make sure you gear it conservatively. Take the larger tires into account too.

Other than that, good luck, and hopefully not too many broken parts.

ElectricThunder
09-26-2004, 12:00 PM
I'm definintely takin those tires into account. Gonna run it right now, but i'm switching out the tires to stock ones (since it's geared too low for the big meats right now). I'm hoping there isn't going to be any atmospheric interference from this stupid hurricane or from the motor on double the voltage. I'll report back in a few minutes! :D Please dear God, don't let this thing crash...:D

Tec, did all the batts and stuff fit on that thing?!

Edit: CRAPOLA! As soon as I get about 50 feet away and try to gun it, it pulls all the way to the right! It's not the trim, linkages, etc. Something's creating interference... Maybe I'll try a different motor later... GAH! :( Anybody have any ideas as to what it may be?

tec_41
09-26-2004, 12:22 PM
I just taped the battery onto the upper chassis and put the other one in the holder. The sparks were not the motor brushes, i dont know what it was. I really dont care about gearing cuz its an old stinger, and if it frys i say big deal. ElectricThunder, how fast does it go in the 50 feet of room that you have?

ElectricThunder
09-26-2004, 12:52 PM
It gets rolling, but afterwards it starts glitching, so i let off the throttle. Basically, not very fast due to the glitching and me having to let up on throttle. When I let if free wheel I can get the big slicks to almost come off the rims though...:D

Broken cap on the motor?

ElectricThunder
09-26-2004, 04:15 PM
The cap is intact and soldered on fully. I'm thinking it could be the brushes since they're an old pair and may be chipped. Maybe adding another cap or two will help though? It's odd, when I'm accelerating and driving away from the Tx, it's fine. When I'm coming towards the Tx, it glitches and becomes erratic, then turns to the right.

Edit: Drove it on 6 cells and it seems FINE! I'm guessing it's the extra voltage to the motor creating a larger magnetic field, thus creating electrical "noise" or interference... Guess I'll dig up some caps and see what happens.

tec_41
09-26-2004, 05:33 PM
The caps should probably solve your problem. Sounds exactly like what you stated with the extra voltage, and the larger magnetic field. Keep us updated! I gave up on mine lol

ElectricThunder
09-26-2004, 07:11 PM
I SHALL NEVER GIVE UP! MUAHAHAHHA! Will post updates as soon as I solder on those caps (should be by tomorrow or tuesday hopefully). I did have a chance to run it a bit on 6 cells and it's very fast...so I can only imagine what the 12 cells is like in that motor fully spooled up! :D After I fiddle with this motor, I'm stickin a speed gems 13x2 in there...MUAHAHAHAHA!

hey you live in lauderdale do u. electricthunder i do. ohh i did the same thing but with my pan car only i had clocked like at 70 it had 6 cells a 48 pitch spurgear thaT WAS SIXTY SIX TOOTh! it was about the size of when you curl your index with your thumb and the pinion was a 33 tooth pinion about half that it was insane but cool. i canshow a pics of wat the gears looked liked it looked like too.

Prepare for a melted motor, lol. I have a Super Rooster in my Rustler. I have run 12 cells a few times, and the most a motor ever lasted was two runs. Blazing speed, though! Tire spinning, fish tailing, out of control speed up to it flipping over due to being uncontrollable at I estimate 50+ mph. This was with a 9T double. Itmelted on the second run after a two hour cooldown. The end bell just turned into flowing plastic, lol!

I've also melted a 14T quad and a 10T Caliber. However, on 10 cells, the motors last a lot longer. I had numerous runs on a 15T triple with only 10 cells.

We're putting 18 cells in your '04R, with my BL of course, I think I should have enough money to buy it in less than a month. :D

Looking at the pic you posted, the battery wires are almost touching the receiver antenna. Big no no. Try running the wires from the battery pack on the other side.

ElectricThunder
09-27-2004, 04:24 PM
I moved the battery wires as far away as possible from the antenna now. I also soldered on three EXTRA caps to the motor, now the batts are charging. And this motor seems be holding up well to the current, maybe cause it's a higher turn motor. If none of this works, I'll switch out the motor, seeing as how this one's pretty beat up. That may help hopefully.

Edit: None of it worked... Guess next thing to try is a new motor. I'm REALLY hoping this'll work. If not, it's going back to being run on 6 cells.. :(

lol, good luck man. When you get the brushless, im seeing bad pictures of 40 cells strapped to an old traxxas

ElectricThunder
09-27-2004, 08:54 PM
:D Naw.. only 12 on something like a T3/Evader. Ok...maybe a rusty... :D :D Although 30 cells.... Now you got me thinkin!!! ;)

ElectricThunder
09-27-2004, 09:20 PM
Ok, just took a good look at what I soldered, and I soldered the caps on WRONG! :o I forgot to ground two of them.. I just fixed em, but since it's pitch black out right now, I don't feel like crashing in case it didn't fix everything..lol! Will report back tomorrow!

On a side note, blew the stock tires, they split into two pieces because they wore through so quickly from just the wheels spinning while doing doughnuts...:D Big meats are goin on...so now I gotta regear....

TrickSpeed
09-28-2004, 08:16 PM
haha lol.

well i guess we know why there was so much interference :D

Well good luck and post back after the victory run.

ElectricThunder
09-28-2004, 08:57 PM
Will do! First I'm regearing tonight, since older tires are totally blown. Gotta use the big boys now! :D Didn't get to run today since it was pouring almost all day here.:( Hopefully tomorrow will work out. I'll post back tomorrow if I run it. And post a "damage report":D

ElectricThunder
09-29-2004, 03:56 PM
Alrighty, here's my report so far! Glitching is gone! WOO! Acceleration is poor due to big tires (can't find a pinion small enough to gear it numerically high, yet large enough to actually mesh right...). So far it's friggin fast once it spools up! Handling sucks now as well...:D This was on half charged 1500s too, so fully charged should gimme a nice bit more speed/accel.

TrickSpeed
10-01-2004, 01:35 AM
Nice.

I remember i ran a tamiya mini on 8 cells once, that thig was the burnout machine. It took forever and a day too hook up, but it hauled ass though.

ElectricThunder
10-01-2004, 04:17 PM
I'm still working out some bugs on this stupid thing. I need to find smaller tires again, that's what kills the accel. I also need to put a new motor in, seeing as how this one is literally burning up ( i can smell it..:D). That's probably why there's glitching along with the brushes that are probably TOTALLY screwed up. lol! Next motor to fall victim: SG Platinum 13x3....:D:D

Edit: Handling has also reached a new low...:D Took a sharp turn at full throttle, needless to say... Narrow Chassis + High speed + Hard turn= Rollover many times....:D

I try my best to entertain those at RCZ...:D

Update on mister motor: Bearing is literally riding on top of the comm! LOL! It came outta the endbell piece! WOO! Definintely time for a new motor to go in. I can't wait to check the brushes!

I say run the motor until it wont go, just for the entertainment value (your esc does have reverse voltage and short protection right? otherwise don't try it)

Also put some electrical tape on the tires, drift dragster lol.

Drift dragster....LOL! Even though the tires balloon like nuts anyways..:p Can't run the motor anymore, took it apart and am using if for spare parts now. I'm soldering up all the stuff I need for my 13x3 today or tomorrow. (stole the connectors from the 17x2).

Supra- That would throw a winding probably on that much voltage...hehehe. Plus this is just a "let's see what i can do with what i already have" kinda project. Gotta save up for a new BL system somehow! :D

brute- 20 cells on a brushed motor is gonna absolutely kill it, plus i don't feel like adding another battery in. But nice hunk o' batts there.
