just bought a new well second hand engine off e-bay and its a rex 350.
Its got 4 ports in the sleeve/liner ,the piston is a bit damaged and the conrod is a home made. The other thing is the clutch is missing and i cant identifi it. It has no other markings on it to tell me what model it is!!!!
how can i tell?
And tried to start it on the bench and all i got was a couple of fires and fuel leaking out of the flywheel side if the crank!!
does this mean that its no good???

1. i dont think ive heard of a 4 port engine before, only 3,5,7,8
2. if the piston is damage, its likely its no good
3. if the conrod is home made, its pretty much guaranteed its no good

in the end, you got shafted. you should do some research before buying stuff, if stuff looks really good cuz the price is really low, its usually not worth buying and getting junk

Novarossi made these engines back in the late eightys to early nineties. You probably have what is called a "three port" + 1 exhaust port. They were considered some of the most powerful engines of their time in their class. The late Ron Paris used to modify these engines until they were absolutely killer.

I'd have to see the engine up close to tell if it is OK or done/abused/worn out. Good luck with your purchase.

Tough to say without taking a look at it. Some like to restore older RC stuff. However, if you want an engine to run and run reliably it is safer to invest in a new engine. I'd have a sleeve pinched for $25 or replace a bearing or con-rod for up to $50 on my more expensive engines but if for instance, the engine ingested dirt, the engine block seal at the crank port gets chewed and the engine is beyond the point of ever running like it should. For $109, you can get a decent O.S. RG. One piston and sleeve set for your engine could cost you that - if you can still find parts.

Good luck.
