Hey Guys,

I was wondering which kinda masking tape you use for trim on your bodies. One reason is because, everytime I used mine it bleeds, and it looks terrible.

Please help,

Thanks in advance,

I've used the 3M stuff for quite a while now. However, after reading Haunted Mysts how to guide for painting bodies, I use electrical tape for quite a bit of stuff. It works great for lexan as well as plastic models.

What are you currently using? Just the 3/4 inch stuff you get at the hardware store? I use the pactra tape, and it seems to work just fine. It's also available in a bunch of different sizes.

1/16 inch (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCY71&P=ML)
1/8 inch (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCY72&P=ML)
1/4 inch (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCY73&P=7)
1/2 inch (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCY74&P=ML)

Hope that helps :) You can also just use the liquid mask, and cut out around the edges, or whatever you want the trim on.

I use the 3M masking tape from Wal Mart as well and at times I will use the Blue Painters mask. No problems with bleeding and I have painted a few bodys in my life time :D TIP When you mask your design just make sure you really press the tape edges down

If the Tamiya masking tape, available at Tower, is the same stuff they use for their window masks (Which I believe it is), then it should be awesome. It's very thin, stick well, and conforms to rounded surfaces very well.

For burnishing the edges of the tape, a wood modeling tool (used in pottery) is excellent... you can check 'em out at your local art supply store. For an idea what they look like, look at these on the left side of this site... I use one like the JA4:

They are designed so they fit your hand and fingers and have a very good "feel"... it's very easy to get the pressure right where you want it.

These work well, too... you use the cap end... I have some older ones and the end of the cap is rounded instead of flat.

I prefer the lime green 3m tape myself. The local auto paint store stocks 2" rolls for bout $8. It has alot of tack, but does not leave the residue when removed.
