I have a xx and got it with a hydra drive. I was wondering if the car has any postives with having the hydra drive off versus it being on. All I know is that I can't wheelie when I reverse then gun it forward.
Thanks, Tenacious

Not many people would use a Hydra Drive now as most tracks are smooth, blue groove type.

However, on very rough tracks, the Hydra Drive smooths out the car over bumps and makes it much easier to drive. I still think its a handy tuning option if you get to a rough track and you're having trouble getting the car to hook up well.

The Hydra Drive is a fuild-filled impeller attached to the slipper clutch, to make the clutch more effective at controlling wheelspin on loose surfaces. It was a good add-on in the early to mid 90s, when tracks were still hard and loose, and tire technology wasn't as advanced.

As relayer said, tracks and tire compounds are now much much 'stickier', so the Hydra Drive ends up as added weight now. The double-disk slippers used by many companies also helped render the HD expendable by working nearly as well without the added weight.

Is there any way for him to fit the new style slipper setups from a newer buggy? If so, that would be the way to go.

Losi had a conversion between the JRX and XX models which allowed you to run the Hydra Drive unit or a standard slipper but only way of ever locating one now is watching the 4 Sales area or checking Ebay. There was a conversion made for the RC10 stealth transmission.

As mentioned it's benefits then were great with todays vehicles there is no real improvement to using one, the added weight and rotating parts isn't as efficient.
