Hey all,

I posted this in the GT forum a while ago, and I'd like to see it in a car or truck soon. My idea is for a tranny to be made in which the idler gear is put in so that it only touches half of the diff gear and topshaft. This way, if you stripped out either the diff gear or the idler, you could just turn it around so that the remaining half of the gear is put to use. I'll try to draw it, since it's kind of tough to explain and understand.

Just like that. I e-mailed AE about this and they didn't really sound like they cared.

the only things I can see is
-Waste of rotating mass
-If you need to dissasemble the trany at all you may as well replace the gear then.
-If any plastic chunks get into any other gears you will have a problem

If gear striping were a problem there are other steps that can be taken by the mfg...
-lower pitch gears like 32
-wider gears = more surface area

great idea...
just not pracitle...

GTman, Thats pretty inventive thinking! There are some not so obvious drawbacks though. If you make the diff gear wide enough to accomodate the flip you increase the overall width of the outdrives & shorten the length of the suspension arms...not good. As said above you also increase the rotational mass of the gears, which is not optimal for performance. It's good to think about new ways to do things though, & I have a few ideas myself that I'm still trying to evaluate. Good thinking...keep it up!

Well actually for "sport" trucks its an awesome idea since most would just bash instead of racing and ease of maintaince is more important and handling isn't quite as important, but on a race truck (like our GTs) it just wouldn't be practical for the reasons others stated. Good idea though.

I see what you are all saying, and like ATM said, this should probably be something reserved for bashers.

Railman, I'm interested in finding out what your ideas are, would you mind sharing them?

Thanks for pointing out the downsides, everyone. I was so wrapped up in how nice it would be to have a tranny like that, that I forgot to analyze the drawbacks of the idea.

Warhawk, I was talking about having the gears only touch one half of eachother. This way, if you strip a gear, you can just turn it around so the unused part is now put to work.
