View Full Version : Adjusting shock oil/springs?

I have always thought that my rear shocks were a bit soft, and I finally figured out why, they hardly have any oil in them!
Anyway, how much difference does changing weights in shock oil make? Seems to me changing shock oils would only make a big difference when the shocks are compressed hard, not on little bumps. Is that right?

Not neccessarily, if you were running lets say.. 25wt oil in a buggy, then went to 40 wt you would see considerably difference on bumps, the heavier the oil, the less ease the shaft and piston can move with (assuming you don't change the pistons when you change the oil) which on rough tracks will cause "skip" instead of the suspension "working" its way through the rough stuff.

Changing oil wts changes a lot of charactaristics. A heavier oil will slow down the weight transfer (chassis roll) when enterin a turn, totally changing the way it handles. A heavier oil in the front will reduce the transfer of weight to the front wheels when braking & entering a turn. These are just a few of the effects of changing oil wts. It would take a full tuning guide to get into what all it effects. Just a 5 wt change makes a big difference in a car/truck's handling on a race track. If your just bashing on the street it won't matter as much though.

i'd go 40 for astro turf if its just like flat and you dont have jumps i'd go with 50 in back and 40 in front
