View Full Version : Speed Painting Contest for September

I'm thinking of running a speed painting contest in addition to the regular Best Paint contest in September Let me know if you guys are interested.

Here's the rules:

1. Body must be painted within two hours. This will require the honor system. If you go over two hours, one half of a point will be deducted for every additional 15 minutes you spend from your score and the judge will make the adjustment.. You must track and post your time log.

2. The body can be any style applicable to best paint, not street race since most of the work on a street/race car is done after the paint is applied. The body will be judged using our normal guidelines. The body must be painted specifically for this contest. No old entries allowed.

3. The body will be eligible for this contest as well as best paint. This is an exception to the normal rules.

4. Time is counted when you are working on the body. It starts after the car is washed and windows have been masked and ends when you are done painting. No designing prior to applying the window masks is allowed (again, we're going on the honor system here) Decaling and wing mounted time is not counted, nor is paint drying time unless you use a hairdryer to speed up the drying, then that time is counted.

5. All paint masks must be hand cut masks only! No Stikka's or other precut masking allowed. Liquid Mask, vinyl or masking tape is allowed.

Let me know your thoughts.

This thread has been purged from the dribble... if you have any suggestions to HM's upcoming september contest, please post... if nothing constructive comes to mind... dont post... thanks a bunch...

I for one, am all for it. I think it would be cool to see people's skills against the clock; though I am concerned about the number of entries because since it would be eligible for best paint also, a lot wouldn't enter the contest just so they could have extra time to do a better job for the best paint.

With time constraints, a good portion of the 2 hour jobs would be in no comparison to the 1-2 day complex jobs.

Sounds like a great idea...I think that new people would be encouraged to post their ride knowing that they will not be up against the amazing paint murals.

I assume that cutting out the body is not included in the time frame??

TRF, thanks for the clean up.

HM, who do we now have as contestants? Also, has a judge been anounced?

Kuya,

I think you'll be surprized what some of the pro's can do even within a limited time frame. I'm looking forward to see what they can pump out!

Pigg,

No, a judge hasn't been chosen and won't be announced until the contest announcement.

This is going to be great! I already started writing down possible designs that could be accomplished with in the time frame. Here's one for example: A Jesus truck; I'm not overly religeous but I think that would look pretty cool. The three crosses on the hood in black, maybe some fire and smoke, and finally some chrome. Something different. Definetly not something I would paint on a regular basis but for this comp. everything goes.

You know, I didn't wanna say anything, but wow...I've been on this Zone for 3 years? and I dont have as many posts as REsp....:O

anyway, hey Respi, you're not supposed to start designing anything UNTIL the thing is announced.....honor system an all.

Darn it Resp,
Now everyone is gonna think I copied your idea. That was to be my secret weapon, who'd vote against Jesus? Guess I'm gonna need to something else. :(

RespirologyRC

Aluma--I'm not designing anything yet. I am only writing down designs. Nothing more, nothing less. I believe everyone is thinking about some sort of design.

djm914-6 Are you serious? It was only a thought. When the contest actually starts we'll see what twists Myst throws in, and maybe my plans will change.

This could turn out to be a very interesting contest. RespRC, I hope you don't change your plans. I think everyone has thought about what they can do in the time frame, some may have even put ideas (words or sketchs) down on paper. I have descided to buy a new body instead of just using one I have on hand. I'm on the edge of my seat to see what twists are comming.

i think resp may have broken the most posts in the shortest amount of times, i remember seeing alot o fpeople get banned trying to break that record

I'll be glad to do it. Does liquid mask drying time count? That will effect my strategy....

HauntedMyst
08-29-2004, 12:13 PM
Yes it does. For those curious about the masking material

1. Get LM and brush and pens (doesnt count)
2. Brush on liqiud mask (counts)
3. Clean Brush (doesnt count)
4. Designing on the body (counts)
5. Cutting out design (counts)
6. Removing LM from body (counts)

Same with vinyl or tape

1. Get tape and pens (doesnt count)
2. Designing the masks (counts)
3. Applying the masks (count)
5. Cutting out design (counts)
6. Applying to the body (counts)

BTW, the judge has said yes but won't be announced until Wednesday

Is this in response to Cosmos question? If so, sounds like LM drying time counts ("yes it does'). I hope that's a typo!

HauntedMyst
08-29-2004, 10:22 PM
Thanks rc! It is a typo. Drying time does not count, application time does. My logic here is that LM application time is about what vinyl or tape transfer time is so it equals out on both sides. Since most of you pros who use LM have several bodies already liquid masks, I didn't want them not to participate because they would have to buy a new body. I counted my 4 counts of liquid mask application and it came out to about only 6 minutes and 15 seconds on the body I just did.

actually, thats about 2 years old! =) i have been doing just molding faces off hoods and roof's because its faster...like most men...i dont wanna so solid faces(fear of commitment ya know) LOL If i start on a solid face, not a molded one...then i'd have to go all out and do all the fine details.......again..Fear of Commitment....!!!!!!

Geez, Charlie! The shadowing depth of your work become even more intense. Some of the work on the one you posted on page one of this thread, and the one Piggy linked to look so dimensional that it gives an appearance of being painted on the inside and the outside of the shell. You have such a fine grasp on the use of certain colours together to achieve the perfect 3D effect.
The comments above are my own, and not a paid endorsement =)
