CONSIDERING A NITRO (RTR) WELL THIS IS MY SPIN/STORY............
I HAVE BEEN A R/C JUNKIE FOR A LONG TIME. I AM 35YRS OLD AND HAVE HAD MORE THAN MY SHARE OF STUFF. HAVING EXPERIENCE WITH NITRO IN PLANES, I HAD SOME IDEA WHAT I WAS GETTING INTO WHEN I DECIDED TO GET A NITRO BOAT.
I HAVE HAD SOME ARF'S OF MY OWN, AND SEEN OTHERS. SO I HAVE HAD YEARS OF EXPERIENCE LEARNING WHAT I AM GETTING WHEN I PURCHACE A
(ARF/RTR).
THE GOOD STUFF!!!!!! :) , I RECENTLY PURCHASED A NITRO HAMMER AND THIS IS WHY............ I ASKED THE (LHS) WHERE DO PEOPLE RUN HERE.(SARASOTA, FL) TURNS OUT THAT A LAKE APROX. 2MILES FROM MY HOUSE WAS WHAT I WAS TOLD. , CAN'T BEAT THAT. SO I STARTED HEADING TO THE LAKE AND CHECKING OUT WHAT PPL WERE USING AS WELL AS THE GOOD OLD ADVISE FROM THE MORE EXPERIENCED.
THE HAMMER WAS THE BOAT I DECIDED ON. WITH THE PRICE AT JUST OVER 200$, FOR EVERYTHING FOR ME I FIGURED I COULD NOT GO WRONG. I WAS RIGHT!!!! SINCE I ALREADY HAD THE GLOW PLUG STARTERS,FUEL, ECT. ALL I NEEDED TO DO IS GAS HER UP AND GO.

I CHECKED ALL THE SCREWS & SUCH TO SEE IF THE HOBBICO FACTORY DID THERE JOB. ONE MOTOR MOUNT SCREW NEEDED A FEW MORE TURNS, OTHER THAN THAT NOTHING. I FOLLOWED THE BREAK IN PROCESS (NOT) , I HAVE ALWAYS BROKEN IN MY ENGINES THE WAY I'M GOING TO RUN THEM.

I HAVE RUN THIS BOAT MANY,MANY TIMES SINCE AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY SERIOUS PROBLEMS. JUST SOME TWEAKING HERE AND THERE. I ENJOY THIS BOAT SO MUCH THAT I AM GOING TO GIVE HER A CUSTOM AIRBRUSH PAINT JOB, AND SOME NON-TRADITIONAL DECALS. ALONG WITH A CUSTOM HOOD SCOOP FOR BETTER VENTING AND COOLING. (CAUSE SHE DOES GET HOT AFTER BURNING UP THE WATER) I HAVE ALREADY STARTED ON THE SCOOP, IN FACT JUST GOT THE BONDO OUT TODAY.

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THE BOAT IS FAST!!! IN FACT MY STOCK NITRO WAS FASTER THAN A STOCK MISS BUD LAST WEEK AT THE LAKE. :D
THE (LHS) CAN'T KEEP THEM IN STOCK THOUGH(MISS BUD). GO FIGURE!!!!
I HAVE ALSO DRIVEN ONE, NICE BOAT IF YOU LIKE TO RUN IN CLOCKWISE CIRCLES ON ALL THOSE PERFECTLY CALM DAYS ON THE WATER.
I'LL STICK WITH MY FASTER, CAN TURN SHARPER, COST A 100$ LESS NITRO HAMMER. :D

SO I HOPE THIS HELPED SOMEONE OUT THERE MAKE A DECISION, SINCE THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF THREADS ASKING WHAT SHOULD I BUY.
KEEPING IN MIND THAT ALL OF THE FIBERGLASS HULLS ARE THIN SO THAT THE BOAT IS LIGHTER, IE: RUNS FASTER. HITTING A TURTLE AS I DID ONCE WILL POSSIBLY CRACK/DAMAGE YOUR BOAT. THIS DOES NOT MEAN ITS A BAD HULL. IT MEANS GET OUT THE WATER PROOF TAPE AND KEEP ON RUNNING. CAN ALWAYS FIX LATER WITH EPOXY AND A LITTLE PAINT. SO HAVE FUN................ IF YOUR EVER IN THE SARASOTA,FL. AREA GIVE A SHOUT!!

It's always good to hear the stories of people who are new at the boats, AND STILL GET IT RIGHT!!!!!!!!

if you're enjoying it that much...wait til you start doing a few mods. that little nitro hammer can be made to fly!

Actually Have Started On Some Modifications. First I Built A Blower Type
Opening With Reverse Close Over The Carb Intake. Has Waterproop Screen So To Keep The Splashs Out. As Well As Kepping Her Cool. Have A Few Other Small Detail Things To Do As Well. Then A New Paint Job!!!!!!

I Know That I'm Not Going To Spend Much Time Doing Mods On The Boat. Tis Almost Uncontrollably Fast As Is. Being The Size And Weight, Can't Really Handle Much More Speed And Be In Control. Again Hats Off To The 200$ Nitro Hammer!!

oh trust me...she can handle it!!! all it takes is about 20 minutes to make a new set of trim tabs and turn fins and BANG!!! control is yours again! plus, i'd like to some other crazy-modded hammers out there. mine is pretty tweaked, and haven't heard of anyone else taking 'em that far yet.

Can You Put A (.18) In There??

BoatDoc

one thing to remember about the nitro hammer, the stock tabs are not big enough to handle much more power. before adding any power, make new tabs and turn fins. i learned this the hard way. it will probably handle a .18, i was thinking about it, but i've just decided to go with a better .15 and surface drive. my budget is keeping me from finishing at the moment however.

Cool!!!!!!!!!! That is nice to know everyone is happy with their hammer. I have one question though, has anyone got their nitro hammer up to 40mph with the engine from the factory. Any hopp ups just the .15 engine.

as far as i know, my hammer is one of the more "modded" one's out there. i still don't think it's close to the 40's. my goal is to find a way to push it over 40 and still use a .15 engine. i don't think the stock motor can do it. in fact, i pushed the stock motor a little too far and broke the crank. that's why i'm working with a new motor and switching to surface drive. i think the stock motor can be made to bring it into the low 30's but that's about it.

Is it possible to make the nitro hammer jet driven. What would be the best mods to do to my boat first.

Hmm, I Think That If You Put A Handheld Gps In There That It Would Be To Much Weight. So A Radar Gun Would Be Or Should Be The Best Way To Clock Speed Of The Hammer. Of Course They Are Harder To Come By Than A 99.00$ Gps.
Another Concern That I Would Have Is That The Hull Is Somewhat Thin, Even In Some Of The Critical Areas Of The (v). Thus More Speed More Pressure. So That Being Said, The Hull Would Have To Be Beefed Up For Sure. Thus Adding More Weight!!! Thats Why I Was Wondering About Putting An .18 In There, And If There Are Any Recommendations Of Which One To Go With.

ejp--if its your first boat, get good and comfortable with it before you start to modify it. although it won't add speed, i recommend sealing the front bulkhead with some rtv. then add some foam floatation. i sank one last summer and felt pretty stupid about it because it could have been avoided. after that, you'll notice the biggest gain in speed will come from putting on a better tuned pipe. and you're all sick of hearing this but...you will need bigger tabs!!!! after that it comes down to imagination and how much time you're willing to spend making parts. btw...it might be a good idea to throw out the screws that hold the engine mount to the rails and get some 6-32 threaded inserts. i would only do that if you feel comfortable drilling into the engine rails.

cfr---that hull may be thin, but it's tough. i've hit a lake bouy and did little more than scratch the gel coat. i've reinforced the area between the rails with glass and i put carbon fibre on the rails themselves...no real weight gain.

I Love My Hammer,i Am Allready On My Second Motor, And I Have All So Broken The Crankshaft Trying For More Speed, I Think It Was The Big Drink It Took When It Flipped Over? Dry It Out And Try It Again . I Ran A Miss Bud Pipe And A Kyosho Kickback Rudder And A Little Porting Work In The Cylinder Other Wise Its Stock.i Will Get Some Pictures On Line Here As Soon As I Figure Out My Camera. My Hat Is Also Off To The Hammer ! I Wouldnt Hesitate To Buy Another, The Boat Is A Good Buy For The Money.

I Agree, Great Boat For The Money. As Well As The Possibility For Mods. This Makes This One Of The Top Rtr's Thats Out There. I Myself Gave Mine A Custom Paint Job. ( Gets Lots Of Comments ) To Justify The Added Weight From The Paint. I Changed The Radio Box. Actually Made Lighter Than Before The Paint, Along With A Complete Water Seal. Made A Few Other Minor Mods As Well, Some For Looks, Some For Performance. I Will Run The Stock Motor Til It Craps Out On Me. Then For Replacement I Will Stick In Either A .18, Or Maybe Even A .21. That Is If I Can.
I Think That I Will Post Some Pics Soon. :d

I agree with everyone here, the hammer is a great boat. I got mine off ebay for 180.00 and had no idea what I was getting into. It was between the nitro vee and the hammer. I chose the hammer and it is really fast, mostly when there is a little chop because it revs out better. The little thing will flip though, I haven't fliped mine yet but got a turn fin out of the water in the chop. I think I'm going to get a macs in a couple of months and a paint job soon. The hammer is a great boat!!!!!!!!

What do you have to do to get that macs pipe in? is it a direct drop in, or do you have to make a different hole in the back?

ejp
08-23-2004, 04:59 PM
As far as I know all you have to do is cut the pipe down to fit where the factory one did. I don't think you have to put a different hole in the back.

BoatDoc

the mac pipe, or a miss bud pipe (both work very well) will drop right in. all you have to do is pull the stock pipe out of the coupler and put the new one in, then throw some zip ties on the coupler and you're done. i don't know if the mac pipes come with a pressure fitting or not. if they do, you're set. if they don't, you'll have to drill and tap a hole for a 6-32 pressure fitting.
