i figure the price makes it more than worth my while to have to clean up and repaint the hull

i talked to the guy via email and theres no hardware with it

whats everyone recommend???

i may go nitro if i keep it for me as an every now and then runner
or electric if i give it to the kids

Make it an Electric. Don't know if you realize it or not, but that looks like a Dumas kit. Not quite sure which one, but I THINK it's the Miss Unlimited. How heavy is the hull? If it's more than about six pounds, it's a Dumas. It's also far from scale. The boat should be wider for its length, so putting a nitro motor into it will make it VERY PRONE TO BARREL ROLLING IN THE CORNERS at speed. Also, you will need to put a lot of the weight as far forward as you can get as the front is way to long and putting everything toward the back in the engine bay is asking for a blow over. Next question, is the radio box under the cockpit? Dumas tends to do that too. If it is, I would move it to the front of the engine bay, to keep the prop weight down.
Are you sorry you asked yet?

oh hell i dunno what make it is lol
i just won the auction a little while ago

ill know more when i get it

if all else fails she will be a shelf queen

not at all sorry i asked isnt that what forums are for???

im still thinking about making her nitro and putting ENTIRELY too much motor in it
running strictly straight lines
like a drag boat\\

you know youre stuff when it comes to these things hydro

who is good for hardware?

I'll have to get back to you on that one. I know some make their own and some buy from others, as well as commercially. Unfortunately, I can't tell what the guy had on it, beyond a flex drive. You might contact him and ask what he used. From what I can tell, he might have used an aircraft nosewheel bracket for the rudder!!!!!!!!!

Just a little FYI, I was just looking at the scale boat Master Hull Roster. Almost every boat had the sponson transom at the middle of the hull. A few deviated as much as a foot. Your boat is going to have a lot of prop weight on it, unless you do some serious balancing.

well keep your eyes peeled for me will ya?

i dont mind having to re-work the hull slightly if needed
i know this one wont be in the water this year so i have all winter to work on it

im sure once i actually have it in my hands ill have a million questions for you and double dog

if u need to contact me direct my email is scottericsonon@earthlink.net

I just had a thought, though it will require some work. What about extending the sponsons further toward the back? It would require pulling off the deck outboard of the engine bay, as well as the skin on the sponsons. If you were to install new sponson transoms further aft and extend the internal sponson framing, you could seriously cut the prop weight without having to add balancing weight. It would also let you see how well the guy did on building the boat, as well as letting you lighten it, if needed. What do you think?

probably the scariest thing about this idea is that im actually considering it
lol

i was thinking about popping the top anyhow as part of the rehabbing process but was unsure of my abilities

im all for it tho if it can be done realitivly painlessly

like i said this is going to be my winter project so i dont mind taking my time on it if it will result in a decent running boat

i think its a CLASSIC design like a 55chevy or a 70 olds cutlass thats the main reason i bought it BUT i wouldnt mind it being fairly quick too if it can be done

im an old school guy and dont need to corner superfast as long as its gonna haul in the straights

what do you think? can it be done?

if not ill make it an electric for the kids to blast around but i wouldnt mind putting some work into it if it will result in what im looking for

I don't see why not. With a hot .45, it should scream, on the straightaways anyway. I wouldn't worry too much about abilities. I would try to keep the decking behind the sponson transom in one piece to use as a template of the area from the back of the transom to the side of the boat. One other thing I would recommend is to make one sponson transom with 1/4 inch ply and the other out of 1/8th inch ply. If you plan on turning the boat at any kind of speed, you'll need to mount a skid fin, hense the 1/4 inch transom. You might also want to replace the boats transom. It takes a little more work, but it looks nicer than a transom with filled holes.

Hey Scott
Your boat is a Dumas #1305 Miss Unlimited 36" X 18" at sponson end uses .29-.35 motor still available for $39 + shipping. Took mine to Staudacher boat works(the son of old time hydro builder) to show me what was wrong. It's now a shelf model heh heh heh Good Luck

What's wrong is it's a Dumas Boat :D No offense Scott, but I had "that feeling". Decoy, let me guess what he said. The fordeck is too long, the sponsons are too narrow and short, the tunnel is too narrow, the afterplane is too long, and, last but not least, the transom is too narrow. Did I miss anything? Maybe the sponson riding surfaces are sized and shaped wrong? I got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S TOO DARNED HEAVY :D

If you still want to "work it over", let me know. I'll still try to help out as much as I can. If you want to go bigger, to let's say...................1/8th scale and have a REAL NICE BOAT, I'll help you out there too. Maybe a nice red and gold 1960 Maverick or a 1962 Thriftway. I'VE GOT IT!!!! A 1952 SLO MOTION V :D What could be better than a beautiful MAHOGANY VENEERED 1/8th scale boat? I know, an 1/8th scale 1999 Miss Madison TURBINE. Yeah, that's the ticket :D

Sorry Scott, don't have a roundnose in my fleet. I was thinking of scratchbuilding one from Roger Newton's plans. My fleet right now consists of the following:
a 36" 1973 Pay N' Pak with a K&B .45
a 42" 1986 Miss Budweiser T-1
a 42" 1989 Miss Budweiser T-3
a 46.5" 1991 Miss Madison with a K&B .67
a 46.5" 1992 Kellogg's Frosted Flakes
a 46.5" 1999 Miss Madison with a K&B .67
a 57" 1973 Pay N' Pak with a Zenoah 230 pum
a 61.75" 2004 Oh Boy! Oberto getting a full race modded Zenoah 260 pum
The two Budweisers may never get finished, haven't decided yet. They may get finished to be display boats. The two Pay N' Paks are to the point they need all the systems put in so I can do the decks and upperworks :) The four Miss Madison hulls(yes, the 1991 Madison, 1992 Kellogg's, 1999 Madison and 2004 Oberto are all the same boat) are all getting finished, with the two Miss Madison's to be raced in local clubs :) Word of caution, NEVER LET THE SIGNIFICANT OTHER KNOW SHE COULD HAVE HER OWN TOY!!!!!!! That is the fate of the Kellogg's. She decided it is her toy and will never be in competition :( As of yet, I don't even know if it's getting an engine or any of the other systems. My big Oberto will be finished as a fully race ready, detailed toy :D There are very few hulls in the 1/6th scale class around. As far as I know, I've got the only pickleforks. I guess this means no racing for them :(
So Scott, you ready to scratch build? I don't know of anyone who has hydroplane KITS other than Dumas. There are people that sell built up boats and fiberglass hulls in various levels of completion, but no kits. :(

First, you got stabbed on the $35.00 shipping! I've shiped 2 3.5 OB tunnels across the Country for less than $9.00 each and they were RTR with radios.
There is one 'glas boat builder that I know of and I was just talking to him about an hour ago, Phil Thomas at R/C Marine Designs.

Okay Doc, if you want to see unfinished hulls. Since I just got my camera back from the repair shop(and no it's not digital)I'll see if I can get some on the web. If not, I'll have to E-mail you some.

BoatDoc
08-10-2004, 07:44 PM
do you mean to tell me that none of them are running?? it's gotta suck to have that many hulls and not be able to toss 'em into the water on the weekends! i can't say much, of my 5 boats...only 1 is sea worthy at the moment. and that's my workhorse, the 31" prather! i think from now on i'll recommend those to anyone for a second boat. the prather 3.5cc outboard hull is just too great. it may not win races, but it's a helluva lotta fun to play with. maybe i'll get my race motor ready for the weekend and put it back on the hull and go see what this thing can really do!

On the two Buds, between lack of time to work on them and a destructive Ex-wife, they never were finished  After loosing the registrations in the club I belong to, I just didn't have the desire(or cash) to finish them. The small Pak was my next attempt to get on the water, but lack of a radio stopped me, as well as spending too much money on Square Dance festivals(thanks to THE BOSS) to buy a "good" radio set :( Same deal on the big Pak, no radio :( When I got the registrations on the THREE Madison's, everything else got shelved. Now, I have to get specs off the real hull to finish them. Not an easy task with the boat being in Madison Indiana and me out in Wahington :( The Oberto is a whole other story. Using the specs from the Madison's that I do have, I am making headway, for now :) Hopefully, I will be able to get radios by the time I need them for all the Madison's :D

Roundnose Hydro Plans for Scott & Hydrojunkie and anybody else.
I have a copy of the "Orginal" plans drawn by Jim Moynihyn on 3/1/60 for the U-00 Maverick showing everything you need to know to build one about 4'X4' plans
Owner was WT Waggoner
Driver Bill Stead
Crew Chief Rick iglesias
Any interest in these (copies only !)

Just so you know, If my source has the molds, they are only in 1/8th scale. Also, I tried to answer your other questions in a PM

UPDATE:
Scott, my source thinks he has the right one, as he has about 10 different mold sets from that era. Let me know and I'll give you his e-mail address.

Decoy, how did you get your hands on those? Did you know that hull was the second to carry the name Miss Budweiser in 1965 and was the reason almost all the Miss Budweisers had gold decks through 1994?

BoatDoc

hey hydro, have you ever thought about building some scale versions of the clark-craft boats??? some of their designs are very nice. all are very classic looking too. not to mention...fast!! i've heard of one of their 8 footers doing over 60. that's with a driver and only 15 hp!!!! i bet a few of their boats would be awesome rc boats. i'm thinking about it once i'm out of the army and i can get back to the workshop in my basement! actually, i want to build the full version fo their 8 and 11 foot boats...but rc versions would be cool too. they've got a 13 footer that would probably scale down nicely for rc use.

Half scale would work for the 8' and 1/3rd for the 11'.
