Since I race and not many people do, this thread is for new racers like I was once!! (a couple months ago). So, help the newbies out and give them tips.

I like to do this on jumps that have a straight after of them or just to go faster. You over front flip, and since you have to fix yourself by rotating back, your tires spin faster so you can get extra speed out of the jump.

Also use this thread to post your set-ups.

I like the idea of this thread, but after reading, re-reading, and re-re-reading that sentence, my brain exploded.

Wait, I dont think I ever do front flips in races...

No you don't front flip you just about 75 degrees nose down then rotate back.

I have a great tip, trim your tires, if you keep the stock tires on the t-maxx, all you need is wire-clippers and some chalk to mark where to cut and you can get some NICE aggressive and CHEAP treads....i did it. Check out some of my recent t-maxx pics that i posted, do a search for "trimming tires" or bettery yet "cheap traction" i think is the title, and to norrow it down use my sn.....

that gives some serious improvement....and for FREE!

I'm soon going to start Dirt Oval racing, and I have learned something from just watching so far: If you're slower stay outta the way! Don't get me wrong, aggressive driving is necessary sometimes, but if you're battery dumps on you get to the high side! LoL...I've seen that a few times.

Rotate what back?

The absolute way to be fast is...

1.) Keep all your tires on the ground as much as possible...while landing on downslopes.

2.) Stay tight

3.) Keep it under control

You don't have to go any higher, but it is riskier, and just nevermind.

4.) Wear comfy undies so you don't bunch up during a race

Wear mosquito repellent. I've watched a guy stand a whole 4 minute heat with a mosquito drilling him in the back of the neck. He was going crazy.

sportmaxxracer, it's fine to do that in the air, but when you land, make sure your clutch is disengaged. otherwise you'll be eating more gears than cops eat donuts.

race tip:

go as slow as required to stay on your wheels and off your lid. consistent 33 second lapa are faster than a guy that can turn a 30 second lap but spends 5 seconds on his lid every other lap.

great tip for racing and bashing..its insurance!

for REVO racers:

1. use Pre-load clips from the maxxb big bore shocks in front of the adjustment ring on the shocks. the stock plastic adjusters will strip out with alot of pressure.

Doesnt that turn out to an average of 32.5 second laps??? Im just messing around, you wont get faster doing that, just stay on your wheels and off the pipes and you will get faster.

Take time to walk the track and look at it. Looking at the track up close will help you understand ruts and areas to miss when you are in the stand. Watch the faster smother drivers. If you do not understand how they are taking a jump by watching take the time to ask some of them. Most of the drivers at club races will answer questions. If you ask a question listen carefully to the answer. Make sure you understand what they are talking about. If you do not understand the info does not help tell them you don't quite understand. I try to limit my questions to one or two per day. Don't ask the question just before the heat if they are trying to get their car ready. Best of all after they have given you some help thank them. They were nice enough to give you some time.

I think the most fun you will get out of the hobby is talking with people and the general interaction. Sooner or later you will become one of the local guys with the knowledge and make sure you help the new drivers.

That would be the honorable HauntedMyst.

tip: learn to follow without hacking the car in front of you. If you do this well enough, it's VERY unnerving to the car in front of you and eventually they make a mistake.

Never pass anyone on the straights (unless your a pro and so is everyone else). There are simply too many bad drivers. You can never tell if someone will hold their line or panic and run into you. Simply get on their butt and wait. They'll overshoot a corner and go wide and you slide right by.

Drag racing down the back straight is fun but I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a clean, successful pass. Usually, you and the car your passing tangle and end up getting passed by everyone else.

Hmm...I'll have to keep that in mind. Another thing I've learned is to watch the other drivers. Take time and watch how they drive, their habits, and try to find their weaknesses. I've seen one guy drive, and once you get on his tail he gets panicky and goes high in the corners or he'll punch the brakes and spin out. Just watch for that stuff.

Don't be a hack. I hate it when someone takes you out, especially when you are lapping them. If you're being lapped by the leader, simply let him pass. Don't fight him for the position and run into him. I hate it when that happens. :(

Another tip - work on improving your braking. If all you do is stab the brake when you use it, try to work on smoothly applying your brake to get around corners sharper, and also to slow down at the end of the straight, for example.

Before you start practicing on an unfamiliar track, just stand on the drivers stand and go around the track with your eyes for a while. Memorize the line you want to take. Look where you will need to go to get lined up for jumps or other obstacles.

Oh, and another thing. Have fun! ;)

you got me on my poor example but in reality, turn marshalls usually add 8-10 seconds to a lap instead of the quick 5 i quoted. Besides, which would you rather rely on, your driving skill, or a turn marshall?

wrecking and flipping is never the fastest way around the track.

It's called a slipper clutch on a metal spur son.

i hate it when the slower car is in the way of the faster one.... even thought im mostly the slower car ;), but i just pull of to the side and let the faster one pass ;)

thats a good tip right there, if you're a begginer, let the pros pass you. if they're tailing you dont try to cut them off or keep ahead of them. if you pull to one side and slow down it will only cost you half a second, and it will earn you the respect of your fellow racers. Get to the drivers stand early, so you dont have to rush up there in the final countdown. close your eyes and take a few deep breaths before the race starts, being relaxed is important. Force yourself to drive slowly, even if you know you can go much faster. Once i drove a relaxed lap around the track, not being marshalled at all. I knew i could have pegged it and gone so much faster, but i held my pace and turned in an incredible lap time. to go fast sometimes you have to slow down!

and last and most importantly, congradulate the winner when the race is over. Give him/her a healthy round of applause, and shake their hand. The trophy is only half the prize, getting cheered at the end is the other half.

use your brakes in a turn (if you run offroad)

rocknbil
08-04-2004, 02:04 PM
^ ^ ^ ????

Usually that will cause you to spin, brake coming into a turn, then allow it to coast through. (???)

I have not started racing rc cars yet but have raced full size cars and shifter karts for along time. Most likely this will apply:

You should never be completely off the throttle and off the brake at the same time. Always either be on the gas or be on the brake. The time you spend coasting is time wasted. This does not mean you should be on the brakes 100% or full throttle all the time though! ex. brake to the apex and immediately start to apply the throttle once you reach the apex. ;)

MurcielagoR- with that philosphy you'll be likely to see a lot of wall time. :D Coasting is ok, it's as much a part of smooth driving as throttle or brake, especially if you run drag brake.
