I've read a lot about cutting the 1" hole in the top of the nitro hammer, does anyone have any ideas what to make the scoop out of, or how to form one from scratch. Any reply would be great.

Rather then putting a huge hole in the top do you think this would work?

Rather then putting a huge hole in the top do you think this would work? This is just an example. You would have to modify one like this or make one. JUST AN IDEA.

hey joe,
I got this pic off ebay. This intake is for a t maxx truck. This is one of the cheeper ones but the tubing is half inch. I don't really like the idea of having a big hole. If you decide to do this post some pics when you get it done. Go to ebay, search t maxx intake.

This was my idea on using these and it would make true cold air enter the carb of the boat. just a quick sketch.

In my time setting up Grand American Modifides, we learned that we had to dam up the air that was going to the air cleaner. Otherwise it went right through, especially with the K&N's. G.A. Mods are the off set open wheelers that usualy have the air cleaner sticking through the "hood." We had a cowl induction hood glassed up for us and that gave us a few more mph at the end of the straight. I don't think that small nitro motors take much advantage of the ram air effect.

my main reason for wanting to do this was for looks and so there wasn't a big hole in the top. If I have to I will make a scoop also.

so in conclusion, the intake with the aircleaner to the carb, doesnt help that much for nitro boats?

Actually, the aircleaner will HINDER engine operation in a boat. They tend to pick up water from flying spray(and other sources) and, like a sponge, absorb it. A wet aircleaner doesn't work nearly as well and, unfortunately, channels WATER right to the carb, killing the engine. I don't see why the hole has to be so big, or for that matter, right over the carb. You might consider a couple of smaller scoops placed somewhere else on the deck or hatch. That way, they can be blended in so they don't look like add ons or afterthoughts like the big one inch hole would.

Thanks for the advise hydo junkie. I might just make some smaller one on the deck. That would look really cool too.

i think i remember one guy saying something about cutting out the "windows" on the hatch and then gluing in some screen. it would probably let in a bunch of air, and it would look good too.

i made a scoop out of a hobbico airplane hatch. Bought it off tower for like $1.30. sanded it to the right size and shape. here's a pic

I have pics of the boat but i do not know how to post ,but it looks just like the picture you drew .I zip tie a piece of rubber pipe to the entrance to the carb and it comes straight out the hatch .I start the engine ,line up the hole on the hatch with the pipe on the carb and put the air fiiter into the end of the pipe and go.
