NEVER.
i bought aluminum idler gear and derlin top gear..
but thats pointless.
and no problem at all.

I'm not sure about MM4600
but commonly for brushless..
if one brushless motor is 12t brushed motor equivalent,
brushless is more efficient.
and you can run 2s or 3s lipo, which can make the speed around 40~50mph..
Cody281

I was thinking it would be a tad faster with much longer runtime. I hope so anyway because i'll be ordering it from tower soon. unless yall convence me otherwise. :D

i will order MM4600 from there tomorrow :D
about 168bucks for preorder ! plus.....just a DOLLAR for shipment..
many people said b-p-p is really reliable..so i will order from them :D

How does the MM4600 compare to the stock xl5 system? runtime, speed etc..
I have the 4600 in the Stempede xl5. It is MUCH faster. TOO fast, actually. I had to lower the gearing considerably to slow it down. Went down 4 teeth on pinion (15 now) and increased the spur gear from 86 to 90.
On 6 NiMh cells, top speed is now 26 on road. That's radar measured, and very consistent. (Keep in mind, I've intentionally traded off top-speed for more low-end torque)
On 3-cell Lipo, I have not been able to measure the speed yet. Need a bigger area. But cruising along at 20mph and grab full throttle, and she just stands up on her hind wheels and screams. With this gearing, she's probably topping out between 34 and 38mph on Lipo power.
(with stock gearing, 45 is probable, but I cant drive this thing at that speed)
All that, and run times are much longer as well. Naturally, I can't give you a number because it depends on how and where you're driving. I get roughly 30 minutes of bashing on 6-cell 3800 pack.
My goal is not high-speed. I need POWER to compete with an EMaxx and ESavage in heavy dirt. Stock, the 5XL was severely out-classed by the larger 4x4's. Now.... hehehe. It's a totally different story. Even climbing! As long as I keep the speed up, I can climb anything they can! (so far)
Have a couple short vid clips that tell the story. I'll get them up as soon as I do some editing.

Just a short video of a couple jumps with the brushless Pede. Nothing spectacular really, but LISTEN to the motor sound. You can tell I'm no where NEAR full throttle here. That's some amazing torque, considering the size of the hill I launched from. I couldn't even get UP it with the stock set-up, now, it's just a speed bumb. :D
Link to vid here:

Best bet is to right-click the link, save file to desktop, and view from there. It's about 5 megs.
I'll try and get something more impressive for y'all later.

OK, lets try again.
Here's a link to a short vid of a couple jumps with the brushless Pede.
Nothing spectacular, but it was a steep hill, very loose sandy stuff. If you listen to the motor during the jumps, you can tell I'm no where near full throttle, and it's just WALKING over these hills. With the stock set-up, I never made it to the top. Now, they just convenient speed-bumps!

I suggest you right-click on the link above, and save the video (5 megs) to desktop, view it from there.
Enjoy;

I hope you're not thinking of running those packs seperately?
Be a nutcase, run 14.4V :D
Bigdaddy, I seem to remember you're also running a 1st gen pede chassis. Is it just my servo or is the chassis built for older style larger servos? I could only ever screw one side of the servo in, so now I'm brushless and 40foot jumps are commonplace, the servo is dangling in with 1 screw :D. Did you have the same problem?

I couldn't wait to run..
so i installed xl5 and titan 12t motor..
handling is so much better!
and moab's grip is so good....lol lol
but..
after a full run, titan 12t motor died.....lol
over heating..
but esc, battery were not that hot..
anyway..
i can't wait mm4600..
it would be so nice...:D

i will use 6cell for a while..but i want to try 12cells. :D:D
six will be fine, one word of caution if you do try both, don't jump alot with 12 cells the extra weight is known to break the chassis on landings, having driven a 4600 on 3s I can assure you 12 cells is going to be INSANE power, one time we tried an evx and a stinger on 12 cells, even a stinger runs hard on 12 cells
Toothypaste
06-14-2007, 05:35 PM
Yes, seeing the size of bigdaddy's tires on a brushed 7.2V system, it may not be a good idea to run 14.4v volts.
Would be fun though :D
I know 3s lipo would be more powerful (1000 watts as opposed to 500 (ish)) but the higher voltage from the 12 cells nimh would give some serious backflippage power. I think I'll move from 8 to 10 cells at the moment (8 cell battery is starting to cough) and see how it goes. I'll have to ducct tape the inside of the tire to help with balooning. :D
Now the 18 year old pede's getting closer to space, I think it's time for some RPM. What's worth getting? I don't want to do a wide-pede conversion but it could do with some strength. I'm thinking of getting arms, shock towers and a wide bumber (and I think It's time I got a gear cover :D). Is the RPM stuff worth it or should I go the extra pennies and get a metal pede? How are the new RPM shock towers?
Thanks

How does the MM4600 compare to the stock xl5 system? runtime, speed etc..
I bought the Mamba Max 4600 from BPP (good guys to deal with). I have GP3300's, IB3800's and IB4200's. I can honestly say it runs great even on the GP3300's (30 minute run time and wheelies on command). Go ahead and get it .....you won't be dissapointed!
I would get a Swami Bar, RPM Bumper, RPM Front and Rear A-arms, RPM Front and Rear Bearing Carriers (you'll need larger 5X11 bearings), and maybe even the RPM Caster Blocks.
Have fun bashing your Pede! :D

Speaking of the RPM Gear Cover:
I just got done installing one. Would not have been a problem, except it does NOT FIT if you have the Traxxas wheelie bar installed!!
If you have this problem, just look very closely at the areas where it is rubbing the wheelie bar mount. I marked those areas then took the wheelie bar apart and ground off those parts of the wheelie bar mount that were causing issues.
I really NEEDED that cover, too. I'm driving in some really sandy soil, and constantly have to dig tiny rocks out of the spur gear. My pinion is only 2 weeks old, and it's already chewed up from this.
Hope that new cover helps.

Oh... watch out for the heat, though! You'll certainly want to use a smaller pinion gear, unless you're running mostly on the road or hard-packed dirt. If you drop down to a 16 pinion on the stock spur gear you should still get about 30mph+ on the road with ghastly accelleration, but everything will stay much cooler, with longer run-times.
The ESC settings I'm using to keep things cooler:
Timing: Lowest
Punch: 70 to 100% depending on conditions.
Brakes: 50%
Reverse: 50%
Brake Curve: Linear.
Throttle Curve: Linear.
LVC - off.
Oh... when the brakes were at 100%, remember, they are JUST as strong as the accelleration. First time I hit the brakes from a speed run on the street, I was turning, hit brakes, and went end-over-end for about 25 yards. Most impressive.

I was bored too. Wanted to see what that 4600 could do, so I converted the 'Pede for street. Took the stock tires off and dyed the rims, put some Jato street tires on there. Popped the big 'ol 23-tooth pinion in, and charged up the 3-cell lipo.
First attempt at speed-runs using RPM rims and ProLine RoadRage-II meats was impressive, but couldn't get speed measurement, as our cheapy radar gun couldn't "SEE" the truck at anything over 30mph. (sigh).
Have a short video of those runs for you. (see link below).
Have not run with the new wheels yet. (going to try it today). Will be a little faster as the Jato tires are a bit larger. Have arranged for a very interesting way to measure speed, but that will have to wait for next weekend.

Im gettin back in the hobby and the stampede is gonna be my pick...can i plz get pros and cons
Pros:
Inexpensive
VERY tough / durable
Lot of Parts and upgrades available
Easy brushless upgrade, or wait for VXL model w/ stock brushless!
Tons of fun, even stock, right out of the box.
Cons:
Gear cover lets sand in. Requires a $5 or $6 upgraded cover from RPM.
Stock tires aren't much good in loose / sandy soil.
Hope that helps.

omg..if you use over 6000mah 3cell..

super fast ~_~~_~
Yes, that bettery is too weak for it, but enough to get 8 or 9 speed runs in, just to test thing. It's faster now. Higher gearing / larger tires.
Could not complete the speed trials today, however. I had it with me, but ended up in the heavy dirt, 4-wheeling my brushless Vendetta-ST against an EMaxx and Rustler. That was a blast.
Can't run the "Speed-Pede" in the dirt, though. Gearing is just way too tall, and those street tires would just sit there and spin like an ice-rink. Need a nice clean LONG stretch of road.
Will try to measure speed by next weekend. Video to come.

Standard servo. Can also fit a mini. (mounting options for both is illustrated in the exploded parts view)
The ST is very nice, but the RC18b has a LOT more after-market support. I can't even get decent tires for it yet. But it's coming.
Your Stampede looks WAY to clean, Juntom10. Love those blue rims, though. Looks great with those Moabs on there.

J- I answered you over on the Emaxx thread.
In the mean time, I have something else y'all may be interested in. A different way to measure top speed.
I have one of these gizmos here. I thought I'd mount it on custom-cut chunk of foam, and strap it into the Stampede this weekend.
Winged Shadow Systems makes something called the "HOW FAST (http://rcreporter.com/howfast.html)" airspeed indicator. It's tiny, light, and cheaper than a radar gun or GPS. Airspeed is different from gound speed of course, but won't matter much unless you're driving into or behind a strong breeze. For the most part, it should be pretty accurate.
Sure, it's not as good as a full telemetry system, all it will give you is your top speed on the last 10 runs. But it will be interesting to try.
I'll try to have pics and video this weekend, but life has not been cooperative with my hobby efforts recently. Family takes priority here, but I'll see what I can do. Everything is set up and ready to install, just need to get to it, and hopefully recruit a camera person to assist.

Welcome back.
I could not test the speed gizmo. Ended up twisting my neck pushing cars and trucks around the driveway. (don't ask). Now I'm in a neck brace, and not sleeping very well. Will try for a speed run next weekend.

i think i should get the aluminum caster block and rpm gear cover(eventhough i can not use rpm gearcover and traxxas wheeliebar at the same time..)
You can do it. I've got them both on there. Just look closely at where the two rub together, and use a rotary tool like a dremmel, or even a good hobby saw, to remove the parts of the wheelie bar that rub on the gear cover. Try to remove JUST enough of the brace to let the cover fit. Too much and you'll weaken the bar.
Between the two, I think the gear cover is more important. Since I installed that, no more trouble with grit in the pinion.
Other option is to use a Swami bar. They're nice and all, but I like the adjustablility of the Traxxas part. The Swami seems to be a little too high up for my taste, though you can have them custom-bent at a more shallow angle.

Welcome, JohnDeereKid!
What is your favorite shock set-up for bashing / jumping in dirt and such? I'm still running stock shocks. No spacers, but still seems a little bouncy to me. Spacers make it much worse. I see you're using the softer red springs in the back. Do you notice much of a difference?

Ugh. Killed my 'Pede.
Was doing some testing. Measuring temp changes going from 6-cell NiMh to 3-cell lipo with same gearing while bashing hard in grassy dirt.
Lipo was heating motor to 180 plus in about 20 minutes.
Let it cool. Mounted the NimH pack. Running around for 10 minutes or so in the back yard, smacked RIGHT into a tree. (it came out of nowhere!)
Drove away, but couldn't steer. Servo went bye-bye.
So... what's a good replacement servo? All I have in stock is HS81-mg, but I doubt that would be strong enough.

I think this forum needs to be expanded upon. I just purchased one for my daughter and loved it so I just bought a roller and I'm in the process of upgrading everything. So far aluminum front shock towers, lexan chasis, aluminum idler. The engine will be a novak 5800 brushless. The rims I think are going to be rpm clawz.
I know there are more pede owners out there. The other forum hasn't been posted in for awhile.
lets get this one going again. I learned allot about my pede by reading the stampede forum.

hey guys whats up? Im gonna work on getting vid of my lil bro's pede (now sold, but i have one in parts and just need to get a new chassis but i have no money or time to spend on it right now), but a long time ago, years really, there was a 134 acre plot of land near me being processed for houses to be built on it...
needless to say, my brother went out and destroyed that place with the pede haha. Massive drop/jump too towards the end of it...
but its on DV tape. I gotta find a firewire cable and capture all the footage, convert it, and find a host for it cuz its pretty long lol. But its an awesome video, ill have to edit some music to it, yaarrrr! Ill be sure to post that up hehe. here are some pics of it before it was sold (but waaaay after the video...)

it was pretty much stock, at the time of the video it had a 17turn speed gems sapphire...but its normal gear was a Rooster ESC, stock everything else, and an RPM front bumper...oh and a cirrus metal gear servo. The old clear case ones.
but yeah, ill leave you guys hanging right about now. Be back within a month with that footage (time constraints succcck)

Haven't even looked on here for months but seeing as we're rolling again...
I've been spending many flying sessions slinging my pede into the air with as much speed as I can get out of it - 50 degree curved ramp (bits of scrap) and close to 40mph.
Pede chassis is stock and nothing has broken. It has fallen apart, but a moment with phil the crosshead sorts that every time.
So as long as it lands on its feet (which is easy with that much airtime), the pede just laughs. Future upgrades include wings....
It seems 8cells on a mm4600 isn't enough for the pede :D (and there's the smiley)
As for servos, you could just buy another cheap one. Unless you're racing (a err...pede...cough) where the extra speed of the servo would be welcomed.
My servo is 6 years old, doesn't fit the chassis and is held on by one screw. :D I wouldn't be bothered about replacing that but I'd be a bit pis...annoyed if I had to replace a top of the range servo.
Have fun with it anyway :D

What are you going to be kicking the pede with now that the mm is gone? Back to brushed? Low or high turn motor? Volts?
I'm sure you'll realise your mistake soon enough :D
Maybe you could make a torquey pede with a titan 550 and 14cells :D

Has anyone had any experience with the pro-line tractagators? I thought I'd glue some to the back for some extra bite. I've gone off the idea of moabs - too tall (messes gearing up), compund too soft and the tread doesn't seem aggresive enough for where I want to run. I know the tractagators will be hilariously slow on the roads, but I'm getting a seperate set of road tyres too. Any ideas?
I'm also ordering some bobs for a speed pede :D. I've seen some similar projects on the web but they all seem to have used big, heavy and slow off road tyres. Is there a reason for this? I was going to order some proline striker 2s but if I've missed the point then maybe not. I'm basically going to find out how fast I can get on 8 low grade nimh cells without spending any money on power upgrades. I might botch some aerodynamic improvements too :D. I'll be finished by christmas.
Watch this space. I'll let you know when I get started (pede smiley :D)
MrCrash

I'm thinking of starting my own speed project as well. 10 cells with a mamba 5700 is fun, but extremely uncontrollable in a Pede. Pacing residential traffic at barely half throttle, and wheelies at 30mph are great, but make it hard to drive.
I'm thinking about a stretched lexan chassis with lowered suspension, and my old road tires :D

Great, keep us updated :D. I'm running an mm4600 so it will be an interesting comparison to see what speeds we're both getting and from what gearing.

to address the spur gear problem how can you fry your spurs if the slipper is set right. i have a mm4600 and the only thing i stripped was my planitary housing becuse i had on slipper i was using a direct drive traxxas had on the old nitro sport but after my second panitary housing i put the slipper on and i have yet to fry the spur other parts such as arms, tie bars, axles, rod ends are another story.
whats the point of a gear cover? i have never used mine and i have never had a problem with not having one.

At www.swami-rc.com you can buy an aluminum rear brace/skid plate. I have a combination brace/skid/wheelie bar from Swami and the thing is practically indestructible.
You can still strip a spur either from debris getting in there, or just bad luck, or if you have the pinion/spur mesh set too loose. I like using the gear cover to reduce the risk of a pebble getting stuck in the spur/pinion and stripping the spur.

these trucks seem impressive for the price... i liek that the aftermarket parts like stretched Al chassis and stretched arms are cheap.
des anyone have serious problems with theirs? im really thinkign of picking up onr for bashing. i'm bashing a t3 right now and want more ground clearance and this really seems the way to go... emaxx's are too big and expensive for what i want to do right now

Stampedes don't really seem to have serious problems. :) Depending on what version you get, your issues will be different. The VXL truck is really tricked out with durability upgrades, that thing should be a tank. For a non-VXL, popular upgrades include an aluminum idler gear (or use the VXL gears for an all-steel transmission), 5x11 bearings in the wheels, RPM wide front bumper, and maybe aluminum shock caps. But really there are few major issues with this truck. As a RTR there may be a couple things out of the box that you'll want to change, but it's a very solid, durable basher overall.

If you are going to bash I would suggest a metal gear servo. I rebuilt my stock servo a few times before I went to a metal gear servo.

At www.swami-rc.com (http://www.swami-rc.com) you can buy an aluminum rear brace/skid plate. I have a combination brace/skid/wheelie bar from Swami and the thing is practically indestructible.
+1 on the swami setup. I have the same setup and it works great. :D

I've only recently been running a gear cover as I upgraded slipper and couldn't fit the old cover on. But while the cover was off I lost 2 pinions as they come loose quick with the help of an MM :D. I think they're supposed to stop stones or bits of pede flying back and damaging the open pinion and spur aswell.
A few new bodies coming out next week from JConcepts ;)

Cool trucks fellas.
Score for my Pede tonight. I found a full set of Wheely King wheels/tires for my Stampede for $20 shipped. Very good compared to Tower Hobbies where its $70 shipped for a complete set all around.
Im thinking about picking up a new set of shocks (mine are mismatched) and possibly a VXL system for it in the coming months, too. The old P2K2 Pro needs a break.

They arnt bad Ya they are soft in the house lol but get harder when I take it out side lol Winter in Maine lol
They are pretty good tires I guess but its pretty hard to tell on a pede since the pede seems to push with most any tire you put on it.
On dirt they seem to hook up better than on pavement.
I guess on a scale of 1-10 I'd give them a 7 1/2.
After monday I should be able to compair them to Moabs, I traded my T-Maxx for a pede w/Mamba Maxx 7700 and moabs on it.
I'm sure the moabs will get a chance to run on the Pede pictured above which is now sporting the Toyota Tacoma body since the stock body will be going on the Mambafied Pede lol

I tried doing a search through this thread for this but didn't come up with much.
Anyone here run a 27t motor in their stampede? What gearing are you using? My brother just got an Epic 27t for his stampede, however i think he should probably go down a few teeth on the pinion because this motor and the stocker both get pretty hot. It also feels overgeared. (good top speed but a long time to get there).
Anyone use a 27t?

hey anyone know how to convert a pede to a rock crawler just curious
a pede is 2wd and independent suspension, so it really can't be converted to crawl. However a few pede parts can be used to build a crawler like trans, wheels, shafts etc... Alot of crawlers are built using pede trannys.

04-29-2008, 11:27 PM
Yeah the 2.8" wheels should be fine. The new Stampedes that come with 2.8 wheels are no different geometry-wise from your old school truck. I don't know about the 30 series though. It looks like they will fit because they come with hex adapters but I don't know. You might have to do a wide conversion to get the offsets right. I thought Proline made a pair or two for Traxxas electric vehicles but I can't find them now. Maybe someone else around here knows.

Hi everyone, haven't been around for a while!
I recently broke an RPM bearing carrier/steering block on my FLM pede, this along with the caster blocks and the rear bearing carriers are about the last parts I haven't changed to metal in the car, so I wanted to see if anybody had used the FLM caster blocks with the Traxxas alum steering blocks, the problem that I think I'd probably have is due to the fact that I had to drill the RPM blocks for the hinge pin to go through, as everybody else with this setup has, so if the Traxxas steering blocks come with similar specs then I wouldn't want to have to drill the new anodized alum blocks. If not I'll just probably change the caster blocks to alum and keep using RPM blocks but it wouldn't be by fave choice with this car. Even with all this metal, this car runs pretty fast with a Novak 4.5 with the 3.5 rotor. I recently got the new t-maxx 3.3 but haven't had a chance to test it yet because of the break in process you have to do for like 5 hrs, I had no idea you had to do this.
Any advice on the steering blocks would be greatly appreciated!

Hey zueslilbuddy, let us know how those beadlocks work out for you. I imagine they could either be too narrow so they squish some tires in a strange way (maybe not the Moabs because they're narrow tires). Also, do they hold the tire well in a non-rock crawling application?

Hi Everyone,
I'm a new stampede XL-5 owner, great ride, lots of fun! Recently, a clicking noise coming from the transmission appeared after one too many amateur jumps and potentially engine assisted landings. I opened up the transmission and found the main differential gear #2381 and idler gear #1996 looked slightly stripped. I've got a new #2388X kit and #1996X parts and I want to know how to remove the bearing from the old idler gear. Can anybody help ?
Second, are there any other preventive measures I can take to stop this from happening again besides improving my jumping skills? Maybe a wheelie bar? Any suggestions? Thanks

I went ahead and upgraded all my tranny parts to stampede VXL parts and have had no further problems. The tranny kit includes the proper lubricant so it helps to reduce friction and I haven't noticed any speed loss. Gear wear, thus far hasn't been an issue.

I am new to the forum and semi-new to RC (had a Tamiya Fox & Blackfoot in the 80s). A little while back I purchased a used stock Stampede from a friend, which I want to update.
I’d like to add a FLM Aluminum Kit with the Extended chassis. My question is what body will then fit with the extended chassis? Is there a body that will fit with little to know modifications?
Thank you in advance to all who reply!

retro : the Ford F-100 fits pretty good, the Chevy 72 is little to short, still working ok, but something is missing. IF you can wait i have the Chevy 72 for the REVO 2.5 on the way, should be here any day..it is a few cm longer and should be perfect!.
My FLM Extended Wide :D

So does FLM have the best Aluminum Stampede chassis out there? Are there other kits you can buy? I am interested in buying a complete kit (if they are sold as a kit).
All information is greatly appreciated! Sorry for all the questions and thanks to everyone who has replied so far!

Thanks for the feedback!
Sounds awful stiff, what are you setup for, I.E, Racing hard surface, etc?

Dodge, it is real soft, red pistons does the trick, and the weight of the car..it needs the Blue ones. :)
Only real bashing

ok after 3 months of it being down I finally got it repaired (last week) and then bent a shock shaft in half and disentegrated the servo case (bought the truck new in november/december) so I've put "new" shocks replaced the servo, esc, motor and upgraded the rear shock tower so heres the list
duratrax modified motor (between 15 and 20 years old, 9 turn)
novak esc with dean battery plug and race prep motor plugs (about 16 or 17 years old)
futaba metal geared high torque servo (bout 6 years old)
shocks/springs off of I believe an rc10 (installed on front they are rear shocks) not sure we bought them several years back in a case of spare parts
as for the rear shock tower, I found out that the shock tower/body mount for a t-maxx will bolt up so I took off the stock rear body mounts and replaced them with a t-maxx setup, next I'll fiddle with the front and replace it with t-maxx one too
