View Full Version : Acrylic Paint Question

I have painted many bodies with spray cans but I just did my first
with water based paint. It has now been 9 hours since my last
coat went on and the paint is still gummy and peels off the body
when I try to remove the masking. I have had it in a dry, room temp
area since the last coat. The paint EASILY comes off when I run
a fingernail across it.

Here are the facts:

Parma Faskolor paint (not thinned)
washed body good
5 good coats

The only thing I didn't do was to scuff the body before I painted it.
I have never done that with laquer paints and always had good
results. Honestly, I don't think it would matter in this case.

Could I just be not letting it cure enough? If that's the case, I think
that I'm going to switch back to laquer. I can't wait that long between
colors.

Thanks!

Can you define 5 good coats? Do you mean thick coats? Did you let each coat dry adequately before spraying the next? In my experience, acrylics dry faster then most lacquers but lacquers cure quicker. Acrylics as a whole are not as tough as lacquers but there are exceptions.

I'm not sure if I should call them "thick" but I used nearly a full bottle
of Faskolor for 5 coats.

What is "adequately dry"? I used a hair drier to "set" the coats and waited
probably 30-45 minutes between coats.

UPDATE: It's been about 8 hours since my first post and the paint seems
to be sticking a little better. I tried pulling off more masking and it came
off a little better but still pulled a little paint off.
