I'm sure most people here would recommend you put that $100 towards a better car. There is only so much you can do to the Spirit to make it perform better, and you can get any of a number of newer cars for right around $100: The Duratrax Evader buggy or truck, any Tamiya TT-01, the new Trinity T-Sped touring car, etc.

im not sure u can spend a $100 on that car. i say, u buy a tamiya kit and start from there. That is what i did and now i race two cars, and bash with friends everyday :D
I think you may be able to hop it up, depending on what you mean by hop-up. If you want it to be faster, you can always get a faster motor which is can go into another vehicle later on.
I would "hop-up" in that fashion, only things that I know I can transfer later on to another vehicle.

I agree with Cain, better ESC/motor.

Welcome aboard super! :D
I've never really taken a close look at the Spirit. After seeing the exploded views, it reminds me a lot of my first, the Tamiya Stadium Blitzer.
I kind of have to agree, your money might be better spend elsewhere, but if you want to put some stuff on it, here's what you can do:
- It looks like it came with a manual speed control, get an electronic speed control first off. This is something you can use even if you buy a new RC at some point. This is probably the single most cool thing you can do, you will go faster, have more power, and longer run time with an ESC.
- If it came with bushings in the wheels, you can replace all the wheel bushings with actual bearings. This in itself will make you go faster as there is far less resistance.
- Like Cain says, a new motor might be more fun than (what looks like from the exploded views) the 540 Mabuchi that came with it. If you go with a modified motor, don't get anything less than a 16 or 17 turn for reasons I won't get into (like things melting or burning up. :D )
- Gearing looks strictly proprietary - I mean, you have to use Traxxas-only parts and a standard 48P pinion or spur won't work, but you can see what gearing options Traxxas might offer and play with gearing a little.
- New tires and trick rims are always fun. :D
- Most importantly, if you've had this thing a while, what parts break easiest? Do the turnbuckles get bent up easily? Is there anything that looks like it's wearing out, like moving parts that are starting to come loose or get sloppy? You can stock up on the parts you know you're going break or are getting close to breaking.
That should more than kill that Benjamin. :D

Actually I believe it's a converted Traxxas Cat, an off-road buggy with a solid rear axle, not unlike the Tamiya Grasshopper and Hornet. A good runner, but besides bearings and oil shocks, you can't really do anything to it 'off the shelf'.
As has been said, if you want to keep the car, spend the money on an ESC, batteries, and/or motor, things that you can transfer to another vehicle later.
