I used to be into RC about 5 years ago, had to sell all my gear when the local track shut down. I've recently started getting back into it, there's a track about an hour away from me that I'm going to start racing at, but I'm having trouble finding one key piece of gear, a soldering iron.

I remember having one of those crappy gun irons that I got at wal-mart, it didn't work well at all. Then I got an Ungar pencil type iron that worked really really well until it burnt up.

I bought a 5.99 Hobbico, I think, 60w pencil type iron, but it's soooooo weak, I don't think it's really 60w, it chokes when I tried to redo my used battery packs bars.

I don't have a lot to spend, so I don't need a $100 iron, just something that will be able to do battery packs with ease. I can't seem to find anyone that sells Ungar soldering irons anywhere, did they go outta business or something?

Thanks,

i suggest getting the ungar iron (its around $100, but its worth it) here's why,

at first i started out with the $5 radio shack iron, even though it took 10 minutes to heat up, i thought it worked well for the little i used it. then i started to use deans connecters, so i thought i was outdoing myself when i got the weller w100 (i think its called, radio sells em too, they are like $40) but after a few months of not so consistant heating up, it died, when the pencil broke into two pieces. when i was visting a track to see if i was to race their. anyway i ened up gettingthe ungar one.

anyway since, i have converted all of my sticks to saddles, and alot more. anwyay its ALOT more consistant heat, and it heats up in litteraly under a minutes. the guy at the hobby shop said he has, has his (try to say that 10 times fast!) for over 3 years now, and its still going strong, and this place sells lots of packs and builds em for free. anyway its a great iron! best $100 spent ever! (well not acutally, but it was worth the money, i am really pleased with the quality of it)

I've always wanted one of the race station irons, you may have convinced me...

Where can I get one? Tower Hobbies dosen't seem to carry them.

Thanks for the testimonial, I think I'll save my money and buy one (as soon as I can find one)

One last thing, I seem to remember there were 3 different Ungar soldering irons. There was a dual temp, a race station, and a super race station.

Any idea if the dual temp unit is any good, or do you have one of the race station irons?

Thanks again
