Hi, I am thinking about getting the Tamiya TLT-1 and I have a few questions. First I should start off saying this will be my first electric. I also will mostly be running it in my house. So there is no need for it to go above 15 mph(at the most). I want it to have a lot of torque. I will mainly be using it for crawling over stuff in my house(books, tapes, shoes, boards, etc.) So here are some of my main questions.

1.) I have noticed a few people that have raised the ground clearance by .75 inches without tires. How do you do this.

2.) I want a good motor that is torquey, can go at least 10 mph, gets decent run time, you don't have to do a ton of maintenance on, and also gets decent run time(15-20 minutes)

3.) I also need an ESC. I don't want some super great one. Like I said before I only will run it in the house. I want it to have brake and be able to go into reverse but I don't want the brake to be reverse.

Those are some questions to start it off. I'm sure I will have more with the more information I gather. Thanks for all the help.

I have a 19t chamelon in my TLT-1 and it is just about perfect. LONG run times, and tons of torque. I would strongly recomend 4 wheel steering if you are going to run it in the house. Since I used my Futaba 2PHKA radio for this truck, I just took 2 cheap futaba servos and spliced the wires from one servo to the other, rather than messing around with mixing on my Jr XS3 radio.

When you build the truck make sure you lock the center differential with epoxy. There is absolutely no need for it, and it is just a pain in the neck. Plus when it is locked, you can EASILY do wheelies.

For a speedo, I have the 16t duratrax ESC, it is blue and has reverse. Costed roughly $50, and it works fine. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

1. I have no idea how to raise the ground clearance, try reading the TLT-1 forum in the Tamiya section, or ask there.

2. When looking for a motor with torque, consider that the more winds it has, the more torque, but the less top speed. I would suggest some kind of stock motor, like the P2K2 or Monster. If you are looking for some climbing, a typical suggestion seems to be to lock the differentials with silly putty.

3. When looking for an ESC, just about anything can handle a stock motor, so if your not racing, you could easily get away with something cheap. Check your local hobby shop, see what they have. Maybe something from LRP or Novak.

Thanks for the help b3guyRC10 and Losi Stealth! Also what is a cheap charger I could use for the Tamiya battery made specifically for the TLT-1? Other opinions, comments, and help welcome.

i put the novak XRS in mine. limit to a 15 turn motor and reverse and they cost around $55.00. i only put a 17 turn in mine. yes you indeed need to lock the center diff. i have not done mine yet. there is a rumor that there is going to be a second version and it will have a locked center diff and fit a regular battery pack on top of the chassis. the one out now only accepts the tamiya pack unless you get creative and make your own pack.

I used a Super Rooster in my TLT-1 with a Magnetic Mayhem. I squeezed in the 550 motor. It is a 22x1 motor with a 24 Degree timing. It should give you gobs of torque. This motor is used widely by alot of RockCrawlers on their Clods/TXT-1/Jugg2s and such.
I haven't really modded mine. I will probably put new shocks and use custom side plates and electronic/battery trays later on. It still is fun as stock.

Here are a few pics of my TLT-1 when I first built it. I don't have any bashing pics tho. I do have lots of fun with it.

I have another question. Do the Tamiya batteries use the same battery connectors as other companies? I have a dynamite battery charger but I don't know if it will be able to charge the Tamiya battery pack. Because I don't know if it is able to connect to it. Sorry for the poor explanation. I never was an electric guy.

That looks like a cool wee truck. Could u put a brushless into it if it takes 540 motors? im not really into electrics but that would be a fast wee monster truck

Tamiya batterys should work on your dynamite charger. Thats why they call them 'Tamiya connectors'

I'm not sure about the ground clearence, I never built my TLT, I only built the axles for a project. You could probibly just mount the shocks to the cantilever mount on the axle. But then, you'd probibly have to drill a new shock mount in the chassis.

I bought my TLT-1 for the house too. The best motor is a cheap, silver can 540. You can probaly find someone to give you one. You can get 35 min run time easy and it's got enough torque to flip itself over easily. Lock the center diff while you build. Definatly do the 4WS. I don't know about the lift but you'll really enjoy the truck. There's nothing more fun than doing the mini rubicon trail in your living room with various pillows, books, etc. on a rainy day.

Enjoy!
