Hi, I would like to begin messing around with a program to design parts that can be cut at a machinery shop afterward. I would like to do so because my father knows one good machinist that could get the job done for me. I would like to have a program on which I can design 3d parts

CAD, or a low - cost CAD-like knockoff is probably what you are looking for.

My personal favourite is AutoCAD. I knocked out this arm on acad in about 10 mins.

A good book on autocad 3D drawing is what you need.
I learned acad on my own with a small book and now i know a good basis of it.

You know who would be the best guy (I know) to ask? rob_b, right here (http://www.radiocontrolzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69007&page=12&pp=25), he's not only designed his parts he fabs them. Hopefully I'll be buying some illo's from him if my project ever comes to fruition . . .

Autocad is great if you know how to use it. You really have to understand the coordinate plane system well. Personally I found it difficult to learn (without a book) and gave up. Instead I got a copy of Solid Works. This is much easier to use. Basically you draw one face of it then stretch the image into 3D and alter it from there.
