View Full Version : Can I use automotive grease?

I just ran out of the grease that came with the kit. Can I use automotive grease for all the parts that specify to use it? (gearbox, driveshafts, etc) I believe it's just normal grease. Nothing like teflon, or lithium, or anything special based. It's supposed to be used on car chassis, bearings, general purpose grease really.
Also, the grease that came with the kit is ceramic grease. It's from a Tamiya TG10. What kind of grease is this?
Oh, and is it okay to mix different types of grease? And how much grease should I be using on the parts? Is it okay to jam pack it with grease or is that just a waste and mess?

Grease is grease. WD40 works wonders on bearings, use that too.
Do you have pics of your TG-10? have you hopped it up any? i'll show you a pic of mine, it has:
- novarossi CX12
- 2-speed
- 2 step shocks
- bearings
- rally tires

I use automotive grease and have no problems. I use the white stuff(water proof!) on various parts. WD40 is great for cleaning metal parts http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

Don't use WD-40 on your bearings. It attracts dirt and will ruin them, unless you spend extra time cleaning them often. The best thing I have found is "White Lightening", it is a dry lubricant that will not attract dirt and has less resistance than regular grease or bearing oil. Since I started using it, I can go 2-3 times longer between bearing cleanings. Most bicycle shops carry it.

Yeah, I soak my bearings in WD40 for a bit to work the dirt out...that's bad? I relube with bearing oil though.

wow! I guess I'll know what mine might look like if I hop it up. No pics. As I said, I ran out of grease while building the rear diff. I only have the 2 diffs finished now, after I bought some more tamiya ceramic grease. I'm still waiting for my radio and servos to arrive before I can finish.
BTW, do you have any tips on building this kit? It's my first. Anything I should watch out for?

Seems like the consensus is use whatever grease works for you. Too late now. I just bought 10grams of tamiya ceramic grease. I didn't wanna take the risk first time out.
