View Full Version : Need a new soldering iron?
I need a new soldering iron and I want to buy a really good one. Can anyone recommend a good type or brand to go with. I found these on Tower:

Are any of these a decent choice?

I use the Hobbico 60W soldering iron almost everyday. Works good for me. :)

If you hardwire or build your own packs, I would get a better unit. One with a holder, base, and sponge is very nice. I've used the Hobbico iron before and I felt it to be unsafe and not really fit for R/C.

Hakko 936 Soldering Station. Put the 5mm tip on it and it will be all you ever need in this hobby, including battery building. You can leave it on all day while at the track and the tip never burns up either which is nice. I went through 3 other cheapo irons before this one. I wish I would have spent the money on this one. Usually in hobbyshops they sell for $99, but you can find them online for about $69 I have been told.

Also, weller has a heck of a setup. It's a 40 watt one, but it's about the burliest 40 watt on earth I'm pretty sure. We have one up at the shop that we use on a daily basis, so it's great abuse testing. After over a year, it still works great. And I'm pretty sure we're on the original tip still too.

go to radioshack and get yourself a decent soldering iron. like this
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F011%5F009%5F007%5F003&product%5Fid=64%2D2184
i have one and its pretty good, it has a base, sponge and lets you swtich between 20 and 40watt, i use it freqently in computer electronics.
but judging by the word you might also want to look into the hakko one, but i wouldnt recommend leaving it on while your away, that is NEVER a smart idea with any soldering iron.

The Hakko iron heats up fairly quickly, most of the time there's no need to leave it on while you're away from your table/pit. I'll also give the 936 the big two thumbs up though, if you're planning on sticking with R/C for a while the investment will pay off in spades. :)
