What do the diodes do? Should you have one on your motor? I have the lrp quantom sport esc.

Diodes restrict current to flowing in only one direction. Im not sure why one would be in your car, unless it was designed to physically prevent reverse or something..?

A schottky diode is normally added to the motor to prevent interferences and improve brake efficiency. You must solder the + tab of the diode to the - of the motor (and - to +). The opposite would create a short-circuit.
DO NOT USE ONE WITH A BRUSHLESS SYSTEM

on my trinity monster horesepower motor the brushes are soldered onto the tabs and my motor leads onto the others.Should i put the diode with the brushes?

i am talking about the schottky diode.

i soldered mine on the motor tab along with the wires from the esc its the easiest place i think but make sure its + to + and - to - or the diode will be ruined

You can solder it to the tabs and the brushes. Just be carefull about the direction.
The white line on the diode should be soldered to the + of the motor.

can i trim the ends of the diode down or do they have to be as ling as they came?

Yes, you can and should trim the leads a bit.
I've always heard that it's best to solder it as close to the motor as possible. But, I usually solder it in upstream a bit to keep it away from the heat and so that I don't have to have a diode on each motor. With the new Novak diode, it has leads that I can solder into my Deans connector on the esc side.
People might frown upon it but, I put Deans on my motor, easier to get various motors in and out for cleaning and cutting.

There is one thing you need to keep in mind when wanting to use a Shotky Diode though, if your speed control has reverse, then you shouldn't use one, because using reverse will make the diode blow instantly....about the length of the leads, no, it doesn't really matter that much if you shorten them, & of course the newer ones that come on a board with wires are even easier to use, because you can either solder them to the motor tabs or to the ESC's wires. In fact, if you look at Novak's GT7's(the current batches, which I have one of), they already have the diode module prewired on it, so all you have to do is cut the battery/motor wires to the desired length, solder 'em up, & go....
