Hm, well now I'm less than happy. When I opened the truck this afternoon I notcied a bearing laying in the bottom of the box. I correctly assumed that it was the outer bearing for one of the hubs, so I put it in and started putting on the wheels. I got the front right one on and noticed it was wobbling all over the place. I removed the hub and found the other bearing and the bearing spacer to be missing. Oh well, another trip to the hobby shop.

Leinzy- I am also using the Powerstrokes. I used the stock mounting hardware with no problems. Also, if you're racing with it, try running with just the main shock, no resevior. Use 80 wt oil. I did this and I feel it really makes the truck much more nimble.
Brian- I too, used an RC Screws kit. I am less than happy with the results. Virtually every one I used has stripped. It's so bad that I can't even remove my front diff case. Be careful with yours. If you do continue to use them, don't torque em down too tight.
Badboy - It's hard to suggest what the problem could be here. Try making sure the posts for the bell cranks are all tight. Also, check to make sure that the skid plate is not warped. I had this problem with mine. Bashed so hard I dented and warped the skid plate and this really fouled up my steering. I ended up buying a new, stock skid plate. Eventually I plan to get a stronger aftermarket piece.

Badboy, there's a great site for MGT steering issues and ways to tune the steering properly. Also, there are some suggestions for increasing the steering throw.
Plus, if you really want to go crazy, and get about 63 degrees of steering throw (stock is about 50) then go to this page and do the TTR knuckle mod for the MGT:
http://csgbenefits.org/mgt/beef_knuckles.htm
Your steering issue could be caused by many things, but if there's only one page you ever go to, then this is it:

Stainless steel is a soft material. I my self perfer Hexcrews they are on the pricey side however they are heat treated and I have not had to replace on cause it bent or the head stripped.

If anyone is after picking up a second truck or a ton of upgrades all at once, I'm looking at selling my MGT as a roller+all my spare parts. I haven't done an inventory yet, but if you're interested once I've got the inventory done, PM me and I'll give you a list and a price. I know that technically this isn't the place for "for sale" stuff, but since my truck is nearly legend here, I figured I'd make the offer.

Basically I'm selling because my local track is closing, and I haven't had time to race it almost a year. I still haven't gotten around to getting a list of upgrades and parts together, but you can see most of the upgrades at various points in this thread. Ti pillow balls, Ti hinge pins, Ti ballstuds on the turnbuckle links, hand lightened chasis, 4 FT shocks, 4 stock ones. Extra parts I won't even chance other than to say I've got a lot of them. I'd like to let the whole thing go in one lot. There's an indoor track here that runs electric year around, I'm looking at picking up something to race there, part of the funding of course coming from this.

Hey guys i have a question...I currently own a revo, and a savage, and they are both raced out. lcg tvps ect. but i was planning on getting a MGT 4.60 and i was curious if you guys can tell me how the mgt feels compared to a revo or savage. I've heard many good things about the mgt how easy it is to work on and how good it handles.
I can say that the MGT is very a tough truck and well designed. The only thing I don't like on the MGT is the turning radius but Chevy-SS has great tips that will really help.
I race my MGT, and I can confirm that is a really tough truck, after 9 gallon, diff never broke and I never shimmed them, tranny is bullet proof too.
Turnbuckles ends and tranny cups wear quickly other than that... Nothing to complaint. It's a great truck !
Beating Revo will be difficult with a MGT but beating Savage will be much easier.

Hey Guys I got another question. I bought a new Integy heatsink off E-Bay it was suppose to be the Integy Racingmax Heatsink T7109B but instead he sent the Hexmax T7115. I checked tower hobbies and a few other sites and they list the HexMax as an optional heatsink for the .28 engine but Integy says its for the .21 engine. Does anyone know for sure which Integy Heatsink is the correct replacement for the .28 stock MGT 4.60 SE engine? any help in this matter would be great Thanks in advance

It's a good truck. However, a used monster truck (of any make) will probably need some TLC. Most guys beat the snot out of them, and then expect them to last forever.

I have the newer version and its very durable. But like Chevy said it depends on how its treated. If the guy has the motor leaned all the way out for racing, or its been through some heavy bashing. It will probably need a rebuild soon. The other stock parts and the newer motors and tranny are readily available on E-bay at some pretty good prices. I would give the truck a good going over to see what condition its in before agreeing to buy it. It might be cheaper to buy a new one, than buy his and have to replace a bunch of parts. Good luck

There is nothing wrong to buy an used Monster GT as long as maintenance have been done. Because the seller is your friend, you should know how he drove the truck.
I did a long term review of my Monster GT on my web site (www.myrcbox.com/review_lt_mgt.htm) this should give you a good idea. Chevy's web site is excellent too

i had a couple of questions what is the life span of the 4.60 se engine i have been seeing 2 or 3 gallons from the tt.21 around here and i dont want to buy a monster truck that needs to get rebuilt every 3 gallons. i have had small blocks go for 12 galons!!!because if that is the case with this truck then i will invest in a savage ss which i heard has a more reliable .28 and have seen people claim 8+gallons out of em. i really only bash and maybe do some speed runs nothing over the top and i need it to be able to run around in the dunes with out a problem. can the 4.60 se do that?? thanx alot

I do not know about the new .28 engine however it sounds like if someone only got 2-3 gallons out of the tt.21 then they may have been over heating the engine weather it was too lean or not enough cooling. I put at least double that befor upgrading the tt.21; it was running fine and probably still would.

The stock engine is well designed. It will last, as most any engine will, as long as it is well taken care of. Mine didn't last more than 3 Gal, but that was only because I screwed up, I don't remember for sure, but I think I forgot to put a ziptie on the airfilter. Ive since tossed an Axial .32 in it.

The turnbuckles would thread into those, but they'd be a little short. I'd suggest TRA2742 instead of 2742X. The ones you've linked to are the shock ends. 2742 would be rod ends, or, if you're really worried about it, go for TRA1942. That's a much larger back of rod ends, with 4 shock ends thrown in for good measure.

The only mods it needs outta the box are
1. fuel line on the brake lever (gives you better stopping power)
2. plug the steeing servo into the AUX slot on the receiver (better steering)
3. buy a set of 8 A.E. RED springs and swap them out for the blue (they are too soft for bashing)
I wouldnt waste my money on rod ends , just get it and drive it !

Couple of quick questions.
I am selling my older MGT.
I am going to take the hop ups off of the old one and put them on the 4.60 SE.
So far, I am moving my JR RS310 rx, Proline Powerstrokes...
Should I keep these :
RPM A-Arms??
Fantom pipe or install my new HPI ribbed??
Thanks,
Adrian

I've never ran a nitro vehicle before, but I'm starting to get the urge to do so... I'm going to keep running electric on road but I've found that the electric off road buggies and trucks seem too skiddish for me to control, especially with lipo packs in them :D Not to mention that the gas racers seem to have a bit more fun than the electric racers at my local offroad track....some of the electric racers are way too serious IMHO :) Not sure why this is...perhaps because there are more bashers at the track that run gas than there are electric
Anyways, I like the looks of the MGT SE...the layout looks simple enough and it's BIG :D I will mainly be using it on the track but will also bash with it too (probably twice a month or so for either scenario, since I'll be doing electric onroad most of the time..)
I already have a JR 3 channel radio and FM receiver, but being new to gas, I'm not sure what other essentals I need to get...
Also, I was wondering what hopups I would need to run it in the Monster Truck class at my local track... It's a hard packed, indoor facility with medium traction...what springs, shock oil, tires should I get?? Anything else besides the fuel tubing for the brakes I would need?? I probably don't want to go overboard, I'll probably run it mostly stock...but I wonder what setup items I need for the stock parts to get it to handle the best it can on that surface..
Probably won't run down the gaggle of Revos at the track, but they'll have to get around me first :D
Also, what is the ongoing cost of running a truck like this every week as far as parts, tires, and fuel is concerned?? Just trying to get an idea of what I'd be getting into if I make the jump to nitro.....

I'm a recent MGT 4.6SE Owner. Everyone locally was pushing me toward the Savage X or T-Maxx 3.3. I considered the Savage, but I'm more of a AE fan and all the additional features on this truck. HD Transmission, CV Drives, reverse, .28ci, and the massive size.
The mods I have done are very limited, wich is an unusual thing for me. This truck was intended to be a budget basher so I've only done little things to improve it. I changed the radio to my Futaba 3PM FM. Moved the steering servo to throttle and brake servo and installed a Integy super high torque 180oz servo. I sealed all the electrics for muck and snow running. Then I spent a little time on the clutch. I installed stiffer clutch springs and used a vented 15t bell, low geared is the way to go! Atleast for my use since its fast enough and I'm not after speed with this one. I didn't even fire the stock .28, instead I swapped it for my Force .28 that has already been broke in and used. I figure I'll wear it out first. I left the stock pipe since its a good torquey pipe and now my truck will wheely over itself. :D Its got massive punch and climbing power, much to the disgust of the local Savage X owners. I thought it was great when one of them challenged me to a tug-o-war......
I've been racing for years, but never knew the fun I was missing off of the race track. What a blast I've had since Dec-25th... Tearing up my yard, the school yard, the park, the gravel pit, the occasional T-Maxx and or Savage.. Its been a lot of fun.
Anyhow for a question. Does the stock .28 really run good? or should I sell it and when the Force dies I plan on the Axial .28 or Force .32? Would I be happy with the stock one?

People have said good things about it. Decent power and lifespan. I was thinking of selling it because my Force .28 still runs really strong with plenty of compression.

So i just now got my MGT from the UPS man. About time. I gotta tell ya, i've been monitoring this forum for quite some time to see what i've gotten myself into and still yet, im astonished at the size of this thing. All ive been used to is my little RC10 GT but i can't wait to fire this thing up, for break-in.
As a first time forum post, i have a couple questions. Ive changed the brake spring to fuel tubing and adjust the motor for optimum start-up, but are there any other tweaks/mods i can do to ensure a smoother first experience. I'll eventually be buying aftermarket parts but not right off the bat. And i've been hesitant to run around the neighborhood due to the loudness everyone talks about. Is it really THAT loud!? Comparable to a 1/10 with a .12? Anyways i looking forward to seeing what this thing can do! :D
fuzzy2133
03-10-2007, 11:57 AM
I would not be too concerned about the noise being loud as long as you are running in the middle of the day.
Plug the RX batt into channel 4 to get max power to the servos and go have fun.
don't forget that after break in change the glo plug to get the most performance out of the engine.

Just fired through the first tank about 30 min ago. Not near as loud as i expected but a nice roar. I had a heck of a time getting the engine to stay running with factory carb settings though. The engine died if i took the glow plug ignitor off so i thought it might've been too rich or bad glow plug be the plug was good and i leaned it out a tick but still no go. Also seemed like the fuel was having a hard time keeping a constant flow. Took me a while just to get it to idle for about 2 minutes. Still not doing right though. I have work but im gonna have to tinker with it tomorrow sometime. Any suggestions or has anyone had similar problems with thiers?

Engine is always set way rich from factory. It's that way with every engine. These engines ain't designed to idle for long periods. Best way to break-in (IMO) is to drive it around at low/medium speeds for about four tanks, with occasional very short blip at full throttle to clean it out. When tank empties and engine dies, let the engine cool with piston at BDC (bottom dead center). You want break-in temps of at least 200 degrees. Lean it out a little with each tank. After four or five tanks, you should be all set.
Always rotate to BDC after every run. If storing engine for more than a few days, then use after-run oil...............

Any of you try MIPs center CVDs? Im curious if they're worth the $50 +? I am sure they perform better ie, less or zero backlash...but how about durability? The stockers don't seem to last very long when they're being powered by an Axial .32 :|

I tried them with my os .30.the only thing I did not like was the area that holds the brake disc is very thin so keeping everthing lined up properly was a pain.Been looking for diff ones found some made in canada That I might try they are made of titanium and are a copy of the originals with a nice wide area for brake disc.I will let you know how they are.I would save the cash on the MIP ones the other thing was the pin kept falling out even with red locktite. But thats my opinion i was not impressed.
