View Full Version : What connectors do you use?

As I acquire more and more connectors, I'm wondering what other people are using and what the advantages and disadvantages of each are. Here's what I use.

DEANS ULTRA (the big two-prong plugs with the prongs at right angles to each other) for speed 280 and 400 sized planes.

DEANS (the smaller sized that Hobby Lobby sells) for Lite Stiks and planes powered by GWS or Potensky (Pot 02) sized motors.

JST (the tiny plugs used on JMP ESCs and Sky Hooks & Rigging receivers) for very small indoor planes.

I solder up short pig-tails with one type of plug on one end and a smaller on the other to go between my charger and various battery packs (e.g., Deans Ultra to Deans and then a Deans to a tiny JST).

There seem to be issues with other plugs I could have chosen. The plugs that come on GWS components are nice, but the only place I've found that carries them is Cloud9RC.

Todd Long carries some larger JST connectors that look similar to the GWS plugs, but they are different. They do come with wire installed. They are longer than the small Deans, so harder to put in tight areas.

Hobby Lobby sells some polarized connectors for speed 400 use that look similar to the gold Stecker connectors. I have some of these, but haven't put them in a model yet.

Gabe at NY Blimp has some connectors he sells that look interesting. I'm just not sure it's worth converting over to his. I'm also not sure if his would replace both the Deans Ultra and the smaller Deans connectors, or only one.

There are, of course, Sermos connectors. I have never used these. I started with Deans Ultra for larger applications because that's what my first plane came with.

Are there other connectors out there? What are other people doing to control connector proliferation? Are there some advantages or disadvantages other than what I've mentioned here? I'd like to know what people's experiences are.

My first plane (a S280) came with Dean's ultra connectors. After a little research it was obvious that those connectors are extreme overkill for anything smaller than a S400. In fact they are overkill for even a S280. I know this because I changed to Dean's smallest 2 pin connector and 24 GA wire and have had no problems on my S280 plane. Those big heavy ultras are collecting dust in my nut and bolt bins.

I got a JST connector on my JMP HF9 ESC as well and was impressed with it's functionality and lightness. Unfortunately I'm all set up with the small Dean's 2 pin connectors on everything else, mainly because the local hobby store sells them for a reasonable price. (isn't amazing how much convenience dominates our choices) So off came the JST and on went the Dean's 2 pin. I'm sure the JSTs or the connectors on the GWS motors (I've saved them from every drive I've installed) would work just fine and save a gram or two, but they just aren't conveniently available.

If you're ever in my neighborhood, stop by and chat. I'll even let you have my Dean's ultra connectors....
