View Full Version : Gear Ratios
GEAR RATIOS. A good idea for any gear ration setup wether for auto racing or microflight motors is always use an odd number of teeth in at least the pinion gear(smallest/driver) so you always have a ratio that is in not an even number 10/50 = 5 to 1
11/54= 4.90.9.. An even set of teeth always engage the same tooth once each revolution while an odd set does not. Simply the odd set will wear longer and ensure a smoother mesh.

Good point, but we're talking about motors/gearboxes with an expected life of a few hours, at most. The brass on plastic and plastic on plastic gears don't wear as quickly as the rest of the plane, so I wouldn't worry about it. It is a concern on the more expensive gearboxes, but this is usually addressed by the manufacturer already. Some gearboxes even have helical cut steel gears!

Based on your recommendation, of the GWS gear ratios that should have more even wear, the DX-D, DX-E and DX-F have odd ratios. Again, I would not use that as a major factor in a decision against a particular motor/gearbox combo. This is just my 1.3 cents worth!
Well if the transmission life is only a few hours which I did not consider then odd or even is no concern. ****
