Urrrgghhhh! I was so close to finishing this project. I started it some time ago and it unfortuantly turned into one of those projects that kept getting put off. Then, with two weeks left before I was to move to AZ for school I decided to try to get this thing done. A 31cc chainsaw engine powered RC car. I managed to get it all done just short of connecting the clutch to the tranny. Throttle, steering, brakes, everything worked! I had to put in a jackshaft (not in the pics) so that the gears and chain would line up and all that was left was to mount the rear sprocket, but I got wrapped up in getting my stuff together for the move. So now I sit here in this apartment in Arizona thinking of what a long 18 months this is going to be before I go home and get a chance to work on this beast again. Well, heres the pics. To start with, this is my workshop with me behind the drill. Whoops, nice red boxers eh? :o The bench is actually cleaner than it usually is

Heres my steering setup. twin servos that I didnt have any other use for. The wires were cut and soldered so that they were in paralell and I didnt need a Y harness. The Reciever didnt have any problems putting out a bit of extra juice. Also I used a front shock tower that was meant for shorter shocks and after a bit of grinding on the limiters, the front was lifted almost a full inch. It looks a bit flimsy but its actually seems to be stiffer that it was originally. The second pic is the rear end. The shock tower was taken from in front of the tranny and mounted on the back end of the chassis so that there was nothing to obstruct the chain drive that was going in place. As you can see theres some heavy bracing for this as well as dual rear shocks to compensate for the heavy engine. The original tierods were bent to connect back to the chassis since there was no longer a bulkhead to mount them to.

And a full chassis shot with the nearly completed truck. The engine was bolted to the chassis with a big chunk of aluminnum. The carb was rebuilt and everything was resealed with new gaskets. The points went bad so I took out the points-style ignition a put in a solid state ignition coil and hooked up the throttle which worked flawlessly. And yes, that IS a Lawrys bottle im using for the gas tank :p I even put a one way vent in the cap and a fuel filter at the bottem.

One last full frame shot with everything minus the jackshaft stuff. I cant believe how close I was to completing this. Mabie in a year and a half i have this thing done and i can show it off some more. For now Im stuck here with NOTHING to play with and NOTHING to fix! I hope I dont go insane here. Toodles!

Second that. Isnt that a rather long wheelbase for the width though, i wulda thought it'll turn like an oil tanker.

surprisingly it turns okay. It can do a U turn in about 4 feet. I know its pretty long but if its really fast like im hoping, it'll be more stable at high speeds. I wont know for a year and a half though. :(

Looks like you would be able to take out a couple of inches of lenght there. Seems you have plenty of room. That thing will just fold like a banana if you don't shorten it up a little. Plus you have a lot of weight at the rear and high up, that 31cc engine will make that car do a back filp (mucho torque in chainsaw engines!!! ).
I seen a guy use a weed-wacker motor, he got a really low c/g. The thing flew.

thats sweet did you check the durability of the chain and the gear. Also make sure the springs will hold up to the extra weight

Fold up like a banana! lmao thats a good one. I forgot to mention the two 1/8 braces that I made that help connect the two chassis together. Trust me, I made SURE this thing is just about anything proof. I even threw the whole thing, engine and all, out my second story bedroom window, multiple times , to make sure nothing would break. http://www.probetalk.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif Suprise! Nothing broke, bent OR exploded! I guess I could shorten it up a bit but then again it might be funny to see a speeding banana.;)
