I am looking at getting myself an air compressor for my airbrush because I don't like using the cans of compressed air.

My question is...what kind of air compressor should I be looking at? Is there a certain amount of psi I need to operate the airbrush correclty? The airbrush is a Paasche - H (size 3) Single Action-External Mix Siphon Feed Airbrush.

I am not looking to spend a fortune on the compressor but at the same time I want one that will do a decent job.

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :D

well you could go a few ways here,

a. you could buy a lower end model compressor with like1/8th or 1/16th hp that puts out around 40-50 psi max, that would be a good match for a begginer whos just starting out and dosnt really know if he or she (gotta be politicaly correct here!) is gonna be doing alot. the price tag on those is around 60-100 and you could always check ebay for used ones.

b. if you plan to continue airbrushing (you will, they alllways doo *evil eye*) id look at spending around 150-200 for a better one, mabey a silent compressor (a bit much but very nice to have) something that can put out around 60-80 psi as a max something in that area, generally when you airbrush your not gonna use more than 60 i know some people who use 70 psi but dont understand how they do it, a moisture trap is a good idea but not nessecary, and with a higher horse power model you will want to look into a regulator as well and mabey a pressure gauge but were getting into things a begginer dosnt need. and could always be added later on down the road.

good companys to check out would be badger, paashe, testors, tamiya and iwata they all make good ones.

if you'd like anymore help my aim is boggle666 email extremetmaxxer@hotmail.com i have a whole mag full of compressor models, and could help you out with that.

really if you have just a single action external mix all you'll need is a cheapy model but i know when i started to get good and bought some more airbrushes i had wished i had gotten a better model compressor, sooooo i went out and purched a 7 hp 150 psi max, oil, 20 gallon sears compressor. i still have to either bring it down to the basement or run a line from the garage to the basement....... i started painting real cars hence the need for something that big.

I have a 5hp 4 gallon compressor that brought from Kragen auto parts for $99 and built a soundproof box around it since I paint in my one bedroom apt.( converted into a paint room)
I live on the second floor and have not had a complaint as far as noise or fumes.

I have a 1/3HP 2 ga compressor from Home Depot. It's a Husky model made by Chicago Pneumatic. .7cfm but it work's just fine for my airbush. Plus, it works fopr filling tire's and stuff too. was $70 US or so, a really good buy, has a regulator on it and everything. Oh, and it's really quiet too, sut's right beside me when I am painting
