that CMB is pretty old, that must the the EVO1. the evo2's that came out last year put just about anything to shame. my friend's ws7 in his XR doesn't stand a chance, neither does my JP.

Hope you guys can help me out....
I have a MBX RR and I changed the pipe, I have a RB 9863 and the polished manifold same brand, but when I tried to install them they don't fit, it's like the pipe is too long and so is the manifold?? I compared them to my other pipe and manifold and they're longer, is there a special way to install them??
Any help appreciated!!!

Hi,
well I was using a steel wire to fix my Mielke Masterfix tuned
pipe in my xr, 'coz it was obviously shorter than the one
Mugen had in mind.
With the screw in the tip of the pipe you fix the wire.
Or do I get you wrong?
It's possible that you may have to shorten the pipe and the manifold according to your engine but maybe the R&B
support can help ayou with the ideal length of the exhaust
system.

I cut the manifold, and everything is ok, thanks
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'll ask again. Anyone know of a new XR for sale for a good price? I have a friend who want's to get another 1/8th scale and I suggested maybe finding an XR for a good price (exhuasting old stock). Nitro house says out of stock as well as a few others.

I should have my XR up for sale in a few weeks. I need to rebuild it and get all the parts looking all new and everything. Got an X5 on the way. :)
Umm, NEW guys...NEW. That's what he wanted. However, I think he's already decided on something else anyway. Thanks though.

Anyone converted their XR into a Hybrid MT? I'm thinking about converting mine to race Unlimited MT's since my X5 will be here any day, but I'm not sure how well it will work. Anyone?
crypt
07-07-2003, 06:06 PM
well, some wheels/tires from the ofna monster pirate or big joe (i say those two because are the biggest in the market) could fit, also you must add a 11- 12 teeth clucht bell, to increase torque, and add some taller body posts to fit any truck body, remove the stone guards from the buggy, but i think thats all, well no, i supose that you will have some hi torque servo, at least 13kg i think this will work well. i´m thinking about your project with my mbx xr, but that will be at least in the next xmas, when i buy another buggy
HDClown
07-15-2003, 10:15 PM
I'm going to do it, what crypt said is mainly what it entails. You can also put a set of long shocks on the front as well. Need to use rear shock tower, but it works from what someone on here told me, if i recall correctly.
I just got a house, so after I move in and settle in I'll get an X5 and convert my XR. Or if I can sell my Savage I'll do it.

Allright.. guys, i just picked up a mugen MBX4 buggy.. i have been wanting to get into 1/8 scale racing.. now.. i got it used from a buddy.. and it is clean... now i didnt want to pay 600 for a new one.. are these mugen buggies compeative with ofna and other brands.. are there any pros and cons to this buggy compared to others?? I drove it at the track today.. and it is great.. it handles good.. and i think i will like this racing..
thanks
daniel
Where is everyone? I know the MBX5 is out, but I also know the XR/RR buggys are still competative. I intend to keep racing mine for at least the next several months. :D

I am wondering about parts support on the mbx-4 series buggies. Is anyone having trouble getting stuff?

Does anyone know if the motor mounts from other 1/8th scale cars can be used in an MBX4?
TheRo0sTer

Sup guys after many years of staying out of 1/8th I jumped back in with Mugen! Last time I owned a Mugen it was a Super Athlete. TexRacer assures me that the MBX4 is far superior to those old dinosours. Here is what I bought on eBay last night!
Mugen MBX4 XR Works
OS MAX-21 RZ-V01B NIB -NOV52058HC,
-053 Hard Coat, 1/8 Off-Road One-Piece Pipe with power adapter
-All standard parts
-Custom Chassis
-Front, Center, Rear Fioroni Torsion Diff
-Venom On-Board Temp Gauge
-MIP CVDs center, front, rear
-Stainless Steel Screws
-Titanium king pins
-Custom shocks with 40-weight oil
-Set of Hard Med and Soft springs
-Aluminum arm mount (bottom)
-Aluminum front and rear shock posts
-Aluminum rear brace
-Aluminum Servo Tray (Carbon fiber in on the buggy but I will include this Alum. One)
-Aluminum Servo Tray Mounts
-Aluminum ERGAL LOWER SUSPENTION ARMS
-Carbon Fiber Servo Tray -Carbon Fiber Side Guards -Blue Star Bearings (The ones with the blue seal, the best, made out of aircraft aluminum and Teflon sealed titanium BBs)
-K&N Open Air Filter -Polished aluminum wheel hubs
-OFNA 1/8 off-road starter box dual motor with 12v battery
Now my question is where do I find those Fioroni shock towers? Or do the ones for the Kanai fit the MBX? Also do any of the MBX5 parts cross over? What about the Chassis stiffners why are they mounted to the top of the center diff? Can they be machined to fit like they do on the Kyoshos and MBX5? Any help is greatly appreciated!

What else has been changed on the MBX5 from the MBX4? I'm sure someone here has owned them both.
Guys, I posted this in the MBX-5 thread so I figured I'd post it here too.
The problem I'm having is the dogbone end of the CVD's. I find that the pins going thru the sphere of the CVD (at the diff end) tends to slide out after a period of time. The most recent time, a front one slid out and starting striking the diff housing.
Have any of you guys seen this and if so, did you find a way to fix it?
Thanks.

Rooster-I own both buggies, though my XR is sitting on the shelf waiting to either be sold or waiting for me to find the $$ to order the JT Racing conversion kit for it. I copy/pasted this from a post of mine in the MBX5 thread:
There are quite a few differences you can notice just by looking at the two side by side. Most noticable is the laydown steering servo(I'm surprised it took this long for someone to do this...), which lowers the car's CG. Also, a big difference is where the arms mount. On the MBX4, the arms were mounted to the chassis directly, but on the MBX5, the arms are mounted with mounts attached directly to the diff cases(like the Kyosho MP7.5), not to the chassis. This allows the arms to be longer while still maintaining legal width, which creates a more stable buggy. Also, another difference, which won't change performance(much), but does make things easier on the owner is the new radio box and personal transponder mount. The radio box now has the receiver pack closest to the center of the chassis, which does a couple things: moves more weight to the center of the buggy, which makes it easier for the buggy to transition in corners and moves the receiver farther from the engine to reduce glitching. The new radio box is also easier to get into, instead of removing two screws to get to the receiver, you simply remove a body clip, and the cover pops off, exposing the receiver. There are a bunch of other differences, most of which just lower CG: the chassis has slots machined in to let the diffs sit lower in the chassis and there is another part machined away in front of the flywheel hole to allow clutchbell clearance so the engine can be mounted lower. There's also some trick carbon fiber stuff, aluminum clutch shoes, and Big Bore shocks are included, instead of being a $130-140 option.
Hope that helps.

I just purchased a Mugen MBX-4 XR that came with an RB C4 engine in it. I have to say that it is a very fast engine, unfortunately, the local track I go to is kinda small and I need some low end. So my question is, which one piece pipe will get me more low end?
Also, once this engine dies (and who knows when since i got it used), i plan to swap engines rather than doing a rebuild. I was suggested a L. Collari engine by someone at my local shop and was wondering if anyone else has any experiences with these. The price is about $100 less than another RB or an OS. Or maybe just some other suggestions on decent engines that dont break the bank

Anyone here turned their MBX4 into a truggy, or done the JT conversion to it yet? I'm in the process of completing a deal for a used Rex P5 that I wanted to put into a truggy, and I think my old MBX4 would be perfect, since JT makes the conversion. what is the difference between C0260 and C0267 axle shafts?
I bought an mbx5 axle on ebay for my mbx4xr
It fits perfect but the shaft dia is a good MM smaller than my XR axles
what is the difference between all mbx5 and 4XR alxes? optional ones and stock ones?
Is the MBX5 shaft supposed to be thinner?
Maybe the axle I got on ebay was incorectlly described?
Or is the MBX5 axle better metal and made thinner lighter and stronger?

On the pre-owned MBX4 I have, it has MIP CVDs.
When I go to the MIP site there is nothing listed for the MBX4, so it must be another cvd that works.
Does anyone know which it may be?

I ran the JT conversion yesterday for the first time. I was impressed with the way it handled. I actually had too much steering and had a little trouble getting it to line up on the jumps. There are a long series of S-turns on the track and I was flying through them gaining at least 1.5 - 2 sec's on the field. I run with toe out on the front with my buggies, I would run with 0 toe on truggy. Acceleration was good even with the C5 and nothing could touch it on the 125' straight. All in all it was a good night for my first time racing MT's. I TQ'd and won the main. I have some tweaking to do, but this thing is a blast to race.

Hey, I jus did a trade for a Mugen MBX 4 XR Works, and this is going to be my first 1/8th scale buggy. Will I still be able to be competative with this, or would I be better off using this is a basher buggy, and buying like a Hyper 7 PBS or something? Is this X4 still capable of keeping up with the new dogs? Most of what is run at my LHS track (indoor) are Ofnas, so I'm thinking I shouldn't be to far off.

the xr has a differnt center diiff and motor placement if im not mistaken, the xr has universals all around, a trick asss center diff mount fits on the rr, differnt radio tray posts which fit on the rr, turnbuckls instead of threaded shaft doohickeys, i dunno what else is differnt tho, but i do think the rr and xr have a differnt chassis. i have an rr with some upgraded parts im able to keep up with the other guys, when i dont crash or have my motor flame out or my battery comes disconected lol

The mugen braces attach both front and rear gearboxes to the center diff. I thought a remembered an aftermarket rear brace that goes from the rear gearbox to the chassis, like the stock one. Does anyone know who made that or where it might be available.

yeah they are machined aluminum, the difference is that they have cutouts and more holes for adjustment. Not sure about strenght though, probably about the same as stock aluminum towers. How do you bend the shock towers, haven't done that one yet.

Hardcore Racing Components has titanium parts for the MBX4 line.
http://www.racinghardcore.com/
Shock towers, front or center brace, radio tray, steering linkage and brake calipers. All in titanium, and originally available in blue, green, purple and silver.
They also have a carbon brake disk.
For $324, you can have one of each. :p Yep, they are pretty pricey. But, a titanium front shock tower may be a good investment...

I have an extra (new) Owners Manual for the Mugen MBX-4RR, if anyone is looking for one. $7 shipped (to U.S.). International shipping may be a little more.
I found that I actually have 2 of these manuals. I've sold 1, and now I have 1 more available. $7 takes it!

I have an extra MBX-4RR that I'm not currently using, and I'm considering doing the truggy conversion. It looks pretty simple, and shouldn't be too expensive.
I'm used to driving my Tamiya Terra Crusher, and I'm wondering if someone can tell me how a 1/8-scale buggy converted to a Monster Truck performs, compared to a real Monster Truck. If it performs well, I can sell my Monster Truck (and backup Monster Truck), and consolidate my spare parts (to share most of them between my buggy and truggy).
Any thoughts are appreciated.

I think it's a great idea.
I have a xr and used to have a truggy.
the only problem with the truggy is the spur gear costs 70 bucks. waste a clutch bell bearing or otherwise and it can get expensive assuming you have a spare on hand.
I never drove a real MT but watching the truggy is the thing to have on the track.
but geet the smallest tires your allowed( tmaxx size) don't get the 40 series prolines. I think they are too big for the servo saver

how do the color line up?
white is hardest-then green- then blue -then silver?

I just picked up a used XR Works for my first buggy. Too good a deal to pass up. Hopefully I'll be able to find parts although it's coming with a pretty good supply. Does anyone have a good setup that still runs these units? Any help would be great. Also, who would be the best source for parts? I know Nitrohouse has some and of course Ebay...anywhere else?
Thanks, MED

Also, if you can't find a MBX4 body, what is the next choice? Will a body for a MBX5 fit the 4?

MBX-4 bodies are still all over the place. You shouldn't have a problem there, as there are still quite a few MBX-4s out there. They'll keep making them, as long as they keep selling.
I don't know if the body for an MBX-5 will fit.

Thanks Dude, that's very good news. I thought that was a little odd since most of these buggies are very simular in shape. I figure if I can get a Taurus oval body to fit on a RC10GT I can I can trim most anything. LOL!

MBX4 rear shocks are in front of the rear tower, diffs are aluminum case
RR didn't have the aluminum center diff mount and had universals up front instead of cv axles
XR has the engine moved back and hasCV axles all the way around.
I guess the best way to tell is if you measure your engine mount holes in relation to the rear of the chassis and I can compare it to mine. ( I have 2 Xr's)
I would love to see a list of all the differences posted someware.
BTW that is a great price you got!
I'm really wanting to get a MBX5 for next year but then I would have to sell my 2 XR's and they are like familly to me. they would be had to sell. LOL!

It's a MBX-4RR I bought apperantly.
I don't know if I will keep it cause it's discontinued and hard to get parts for.

I have a complete MBX-4RR roller, including an extra chassis and a few other parts, that I'm selling for $145. That way, you'd be guaranteed that you have spare parts.
I have recently gotten into the habit of buying 2 of whatever vehicle I plan on racing. That way, I always have the spares I need, even if the local shop is out of stock.
I had been thinking about converting it to a truggy, but the truggy kit is $169, and I really didn't want to spend that kind of cash, since I already have 2 monster trucks.

Well I did a Mistake basically, I wanted the MBX-4XR, I don't think I will keep it.
I wanted a High end buggy, I think i'll end up maybe finding a Kanai 3 and selling this one.
I already have an old Inferno and I know what kind of a pain it is when you can't get parts.

Whether you had purchased an XR or an RR, they're both going to be as difficult to get parts for. They've both been discontinued.
Almost all of the parts are interchangeable between the XR and the RR. The main difference between them is that the center diff and engine were moved back a little bit. So, that makes things like driveshafts and chassis supports have different sizes.
Here are some other differences that the XR has from the RR:
- Aluminum center diff mount
- CV axles
- CV driveshafts
The original version of the XR also overdrove the front, but they changed that after a little while.
A Kanai 3 would probably be a good bet, if you don't want to scrounge for parts. There are quite a few MBX-4 variants out there, so getting parts here-and-there wouldn't be too hard for a while, but I anticipate it getting more and more difficult as time goes on (just like any vehicle).
Some vendors support their vehicles for what seems like forever. For example, I can still find quite a few parts for my Associated RC10T (didn't they come out over 10 years ago?). I've also heard that Tamiya guarantees parts support on their vehicles for at least 10 years. I have no idea what Mugen's parts-support policy is.
From what I've heard, some of the parts from the MBX-5 will fit on the MBX-4 series, like the shocks and wing. I think the axles fit too.
In any case, good luck.

No the MBX 5 is completely different, except the cva's, and diffs.
For the older MBX 4 it is part #C0170 its kind of "Z" shaped
For the XR, and the RR it is part #C0181(2 deg) its kind of "C" shaped
Both are alum. and purple anodized...

Anyone here converted an XR to a truggy? What modifications need to be done. I assume a larger spur or smaller pinion would be needed for the larger tires. What about offset wheel hubs?
Hey im new to mugen buggies and want to know whats the better buggy vetween the mb4-4 rr works and mbx-4 xr works? does the xr have works im not sure, i just want to know what edition mbx-4 buggy is the best in quality potential, and overall best parts like diffs, shocks etc. thanks. if the rr works is not the best how much better are the other versions?
Pizzagod

There is no RR Works. There's and MBX-4RR and an MBX-4XR Works.
The XR Works is the successor to the RR, and has a few upgrades. These include moving the diff back to give more rear traction, CVDs all around, and different gearing in the front diff (this was changed, and then I believe it was changed back). Oh, the XR Works also has an aluminum center diff mount. There used to be an RR -> XR conversion kit, but I think it was missing the diff mount.
It's all a matter of preference, but Mugen came out with the MBX-4 first, the MBX-4RR next, and the MBX-4XR Works last. Most (probably 95%) of the parts are interchangeable.
Any of the 3 will do what you need them to. If you can find an XR Works, it'll have some nice upgrades. I moved from an RR to an XR Works. I can't say I notice a lot of difference, but maybe a little.
I have an RR roller for sale, if you're looking...

You can check out some instructions at:
http://jtracingproducts.com/mbx4%20conversion.html
I didn't see anything for the XR, specifically (everything they refer to just says Mugen MBX-4), so I don't know if this one will work. It does look like the pictures show an aluminum center diff mount, so I'm guessing they made the mod to an XR. You're probably fine with any of the MBX-4-series models.

also how else can i tell between an xr and rr besides the alum center diff mount?

The slot for the center diff gear moved back behind the chassis screws that are located about mid-point on the chassis (on the outer left and right edge).
The XR should also have CVDs on all axles, and shouldn't have dogbones for the driveshafts.
also how else can i tell between an xr and rr besides the alum center diff mount?
I don't really know what a good price for an XR Works would be. It really depends on the condition, and what it comes with. I'm selling an RR roller for $119, and I believe that's a good price, so I'd say an XR Works roller might be a good price at maybe $149 or less...
Is this an xr or rr? what do you think?
oops forgot the pics here it is.

Yep, looks like an XR Works.
It has the aluminum center diff mount, universals for drive shafts, and has the cutout for the center diff gear behind the screws I was talking about.
From those pictures, I can't tell if it has the CVDs installed, but it's a safe bet.
Oh, also, I think the XR Works came with big bore shocks. Maybe someone else can confirm this... In any case, that's a good-looking buggy. If the price is what you're looking for, I'd go for it.

The XRWorks had the 3mm shock shafts, not the 3.5mm, or big bore shocks, not that their shocks were weak. I've never broke one in my XR.
I dont know what an XR is worth second hand but they seem pretty cheap for what your getting, they are still a high quality buggy compared to a lot of current buggys.
They are very strong and they are a Mugen = quality.
They have all the adjustments you will ever need to set it up for different surfaces and tracks and you can strap in any engine you want and not worry about the driveline. You wont be dissapointed with an XR.
Im seriously thinking about snapping up another XR second hand as i have another engine and two sevos without a home and you can get XRs cheap from what i've seen. Set it up and i'll have another great buggy ready to go.

I received your questions about the MBX-4, but you have private messages turned off in your profile, and I can't send one back. Turn them on, or give me your e-mail address, and I'll get back to you.
(Apologize for the public posting, but Jod PM'd me regarding a post in this thread, and this is the only way I can get back to him).

I am new to buggies, and just bought a older used MBX4 XR Works car from a racer that was getting out of the sport. I can't beleive how fast these cars are! I am a 1.0 inch outrigger racer at heart...
Anyway, onto my question. I am wondering if the MBX-5 body will fit the MBX-4 XR Works car. If not, what will work? Also, are there any good piggy back shocks for this car?
Thanks ahead of time for any help!

You may get the MBX5 body to fit but i dont think it would be worth it from all the cutting you will need to do. Why do you want that body? Are you having trouble getting the XRWorks body? Or just like the look of it?
Piggy back shocks are not needed. Mugen shocks are the best you can get. If you want to upgrade the shocks, you can get the MBX5 shocks with the bigger shaft, but, they wont perform any different from the XR shocks, they will just increase durability. (allthough the XR shocks are very strong)
Good to hear your happy with your purchase. You have a great buggy there.

If anybody is looking for a backup Mugen MBX4 xr works buggy to run or for parts I have a rolling chassis that I need to get rid of. The Buggy is brand new never run or touched the dirt. It has the front blue, white, and grey option springs still all in the package. This buggy is in mint condition. I had intentions of racing it but I got deep into 1/8 scale onroad. I am looking to make a quick sale on it. I need the money.

I really don't know much about this conversion for the mbx 4. I would have to say that its not worth dumping money into an old car I would just race it as it is. If you want a truggy I would suggest waiting and seeing what the the manufactures are coming out with in 2008. If I were you I would put your money towards a new truggy or buggy cause honestly its going to be tough to find parts for the mbx 4 buggy thats why I sold mine unless you are going to do backyard bashing with it. If you plan on racing go with something new less headache locating parts for it. I hope this helps answer your questions and you decisions.
