That graphite looks kinda thin, but otherwise sweet job, why is the chassi in 2 pieces? is it going to have some sort of shock incorporated between the pieces for the rear suspension?
NMT_RACER_BOY
07-29-2003, 03:17 PM
nope,
the chassis will be 3 plates thick.
the two middle pieces will get squished by the top pan and the bottom pan and the second middle piece will be able to slide out and in for the adjustability of wheel base.
The chassis it self will not bend for suspension.
If it did, the belt would get fudged up.
Although the CF may look thin, it's incredibly stiff and strong.
It's alittle over 1mm so the final chassis will be like 3.3mm thick in the middle.

very original GJ, i cant wait to see the result. have fun.

That will be very cool. The chassis doesn't need to be too thick because it is a micro car. Good luck on this project!

Errrrrr.....the belt will get fudged up!? How do you think the supension on the stock micro works?! The belt can have quite a lot of slack in the micro before it becomes a problem. With no suspension the car should handle horribly.
Also where is the battery going? And don't you think 3.3mm is a bit thick? I mean your not dropping this thing off buildings...
Hopefully you will take this as constructive critism as its intended.
Or mabye I just don't understand this design at all. (most likely)

Nah,
it won't be a dirt rally, it will be a tarmac rally car.
It will hopely handle bumps and jumps.
Yes, i know how suspension works on the micro.
This chassis will not be using flex or moving of the main chassis for rear suspension.

What did you use to cut the carbon fiber?
NMT_RACER_BOY
07-30-2003, 01:18 PM
I think this is as far as i can go right now. (excluding the upper pan and lower pan i will be making tommorow)
I have to wait till my batteries get here and i also need some more parts.:(

You can sold of see it on the 3rd last picture on the first post.
I used a dremel and you can see it hiding by the grass in that picture :)

After my hardwork, I ended up with my very own Super lightweight Carbon Fiber Mailbox Flag... lol :D

hey nmt_racer_boy ur using a dremel right? i made a chassi for my micro out of carbon fiber and it stinks! it smells like burning plastic! does yours smell like that too?
NMT_RACER_BOY
07-31-2003, 04:39 PM
MY stuff smells like...
*Sniff*sniff*
hmm....
I think it smells like...
Nothing..
lol:)
Redfox

Hey don't sniff too much! It's not good to inhale CF dust... i have been led to believe that it's carcinogenic... i might be wrong, but i know it's not good for you anywayz.
I'm getting myself an imitation dremel in a few days. Hopefully it does a good job. I need to eventually cut some CF for a project car...
Btw NMT, can you tell me what kinda cutter you used to cut the CF with?? I have a diamond wheel cutter and the normal cutting wheels, and some other random bits...

Awesome project!
a warning to all CF cutters:
DO NOT BREATH THE DUST! Were at least a painter's mask, a 3m mask with filters and all is best. Because carbon fiber is extremely brittle the dust is actually very tiny razors, when inhaled, they can cut your asophagus (sp) and lungs. I hate to sound like your mom or something, but it can seriously screw you up!
Thanks and safe cutting
NMT_RACER_BOY

I used fiber backed cutting wheel
And I used the mask in the background, Is that ok? or should I get a better mask before going further?
After i cut the fiber, I wash the pieces with the hose and wipe it with a paper towel when i bring it inside to dry it

And gloves, don't want any small fibers stuck in the skin.

Wow man, that thing is pretty trick. Nothing like a nice original micro project. :)
Keep up the good work!
Now lets see you splice in a 540 with that project! :p

Maybe i should wear gloves and safety glasses... but i wear glasses and blast my hands and legs with hose when i am done and then take a shower after that.
Well i finished the bottom part. This might be the last piece I cut out because I am not sure if i am going to need an upperdeck.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid72/p409936cd290e6cc40b922d631083bfd7/fb838b07.jpg
What do you guys think?
Upperdeck or nono?
Animeboy123
08-01-2003, 02:27 PM
It all looks sweet, i wish i could build a custom chassis for my Micro.
I think u should build an upperdeck for it, it could substitute as the battery strap and hold the reciever and the ESC.
Redfox
08-03-2003, 10:51 AM
Yeah an upper deck rocks. It ain't much more weight and it will add rigidity to your chassis... not that you need it with CF that freakin thick! :D :D :D
The_In_Kid
08-03-2003, 12:39 PM
where did you get the CF like that?
NMT_RACER_BOY

email jeffery
tracyjef@nbnet.nb.ca
Mention Steven Chun and he will sell you 4 sheets of carbon fiber for 15USD + shipping,
good luck!
Ya,
redfox,
I guess i will make a upperdeck but i need to buy parts first.
LOL, don't expect another update for few weeks now...
