yeah id recommend the plate as a worthwhile hop up. it should help the gear run true and prolong life. however if your not having problems with it now.....
Thanks karndriver
Has anyone here broken any parts on the Evo3 yet?( Was thinking of stocking up on some spares.) If not what do you guys think will be the necessary spares to have at all times.
thanks

Hello fellow Tamiya racers. I just had a quick setup question. How could I make my car exit the corners better. I drive a tt01 and I'm having trouble coming out of corners...its slow, no traction! I was wondering if maybe giving the car some ackerman effect would help? I'm racing my friend's TC3, and I can keep up on the straights, and turn-ins...but exiting, his car just rus away!

hi sasso
sounds to me like your ratio is too high? like you need more acceleration. (car takes time to wind up) and i would suggest stiffening the front springs and softening the rear but if your car is stock stiffen the whole cars springs. maybe throw in a swaybar. thats what i would suggest. i have no concept of ackerman or how it works. sorry cant help you there...i race against tc3's and find that the tamiya sits lower handles better and turns in better. you could also try braking and turning in at different times in the turn to beat him. you dont always have to enter first to exit first! oh and play with the camber and caster angles. more caster will give a bigger contact patch on the fronts. but probly isnt adjustable. camber is though. try changing that for more lateral grip...

if it was up to me i would buy allot of one way gears. and a set of diff pinions. but most of the car is bombproof. thats about all i can think of.
attn karndriver,
Does your C-hub carreries slightly rock forwards and backwards when you try to move it from the top?(i just want to see if it is normal...cause those things are made up of plastic, thinking of upgradeing to alloy:D )

The only part i have broken so far is a ball head king pin after hitting a newbie reversing at the end of the main straight.
I have also stripped a one way gear cos the screws backed out cos they were not tight enough.

The c hubs do rock slightly on mine as well. I am sure this is normal. You could make up a set if tie rods to brace the c hubs to reduce the slop but I don't think this is necessary.
square make alloy c hubs and hub carriers in red and blue. You can find their products here:

thanks jiggen
What is the best alloy hop up you guys recommend? are all the square hopups the same colour as the the blue spacers that come in the standard tb evo3 kit?
BTW here is a pic of the colour graphite conversion from ballistic hobbies

I don't think the evo 3 really needs additional alloy bits My evo 3 sl runs fine the way it is.:) I'd like to get a set of red square gear cases just for eye candy value but its not worth the dollars imho.
At this point in time i'd be looking at getting a better steering servo cos the s3003 doesn't cut it for racing.
I am not sure if the square hop ups are the same blue as tamiya's but they look pretty simular.
Today was the 3rd time i have driven my with my old the 12t ( gear ratio = 5.35 ). Zooming down the street at 60+km/hr , it was so cool  , but when i came in to check the one-way gear...its all bent and crooked :( . Looks like i will be getting a carbon reinforcing plate, lots of one-way gears and two sets of suspension shafts( i bent the long front suspension shaft during a small crash with the curb using my stock "tin can " motor :( ... its so weak!)

its perfectly normal for the arms to 'rock'. i suppose eventually it will cause slop in the lower arm and suspension shaft. i no longer have this problem as i put rods from the spare hole in the hub carier to the upper steering post mounts. just take the normal screws out and replace with ball studs. just like on an 04pro/trf414

try this as well as getting the plate

you can also shim the drive shaft forwards by placing shims on the end of the drive shaft in the rear diff before putting the rear pinion on.

dude you have to buy the whole thing seperate. but buy the delrin diff outdrives its well worth it to increase speed and reduce weight. as for the person [sorry have forgotten your name] with the pinion stripping the spur.i have this same problem with my surikarn running stock. i think this could be crash related as you suggest. but the rear diff is perfect. they say that the diffs need time to 'bed in' i have no idea about what this means or the time it takes? so im shuddering to thing whats going to happen when i put a 10*2 peak vantage into it. i guess ill have to wait and see. i was also thinking that the stripping problem might be due to the lack of actual diff action in the one way. causing the gear to want to drift backwards? or is this not possible?? anyone have any suggestions/theories. also i saw on the orion site a pic of the new 'trf 415' which looks like a yokomo/shumacher/evo inbreed. pretty rippedoff when you buy the evo3 thinking its the new 414m huh!

guys guys guys so many fixes out there now
Best Fix in terms of price for performance is the Penguin Backing Plate
its just like the oneway reinforcement plate with the surikarn edition exept its got a bigger diameter reaching till the end of the teeth you can find them at www.speedtechrc.com this is a perfect fit.
there is also a new oneway available from someone in Germany , its also an instant fix more info at www.swebs.dk
THE best fix though is the square gearboxs they fix the stripping gears but ontop of that add a great stiffness to the car , not only eye candy ;)
hope this helps

My one way gear is holding up well with all teeth intact. I have striped one but that was because i didn't do up the screws tight enough.
the only real problem i am having at the moment is i keep breaking ball end king pins (50986) which is a pain since this part secures the top of the steering knuckle and controls camber.
so far i have broken three and this part is not even listed in the 2002 tamiya catalogue.

racing in the stock (newbie/hack) class at me local track. good thing for me is i now qualify to race in the pro stock class next year. dunno if its because of A) my superior driving skill (not) or if its because of B) the race director feeling sorry for the abuse my car is being subjected to. me thinks its B :D
the only way i can get this part at the moment is to buy the ta04 racing hub carrier set which i am not going to do as i already have a set of hub carriers minus the ballend king pins here that is not being used
the part number is 50986 which i got from my evo 3 manual and i have this on order with 3 hobby shops in my area.

the bevel gear in thefront gear case is prone to stipping in heavy impacts this is due to the drive shaft being a touch on the short side this is easily fixed by getting the new lightweight drive shaft which is longer
the part number is 53686
you can find them on ebay for cheap and as a added bonus it improves accelaration

Almost a tough one but Duratrax Piranha Nimh or MRC Brain 959 charger are the best bang of the buck at this moment.
If I were you, I would save up your money and buy anything in the 100 range. YOu'll have more choices there

Guys, I'm trying to work out a deal for EVO III chassis with blue parts.
I'm told this is a "Limited Edition" car? Is this true? I really want the RC TB-Evo.3 Surikarn car.
What is the real difference with the Surikarn and the regular EVO ?
What are the hop-ups for this?
This is hopefully going to be a race car, my first race car!
microrcdude
09-02-2004, 10:02 PM
the surikarn car has red annodising on some parts. Theres not much difference between this and the EVO3. only the red parts and the 3mm thick lower chassis plate
jiggen5354
09-02-2004, 10:55 PM
aside from red anodising you get titanium screws and turnbuckles. alloy upper deck mounts, a graphite backing plate for the one way diff and a slightly different rear shock tower(moves rear body posts out further).
there is also theinclusion of sorex 36R tires as well. as for blue parts for the evo 3 and evo 3 surikarn, Tamiya make a blue coversion kit with most of the alloy bits in blue. another option is to look at parts made by square racing

I got my EVO III the other day, and oh boy what a car! This is SO much nicer then my TT01!!!
Last night I raced for the 1st time, and after some set up problems (rear top suspension arm screw fell out twice!) I only got to run the main, being last, I managed to work my way up to 3rd! Not to shabby!
I also removed the one way and put in a ball diff, the car came with a locked/ glued one way, the car would just not turn in.
What gearing do you guys use? I'm running a Monster stock motor, 35 pinion and stock spur.
Anyone have problems with screws coming loose?
lastly, what about the blue al alloy rear hub? Are they worth it? What other hop-up are out there? I have the drive shaft and rear alloy drive shafts.
Is the new TRF suspension worth the $100?

The evo3 doesnt need any hop-ups barely... cept for the parts u mentioned... never had any screws come loose cept for the ones i forgot to tighten... just make sure its snug... but dont over tighten...
There is the blue conversion kit... simply replaces all the gunmetal parts... includes the steering post, steering wipers, rear lightweight shafts, main prop shaft, motor mount, servo mount, front one-way, and a set of the suspension blocks with various degree settings... also the upper f/r brace for the upper links, blue also which is separate... u need 2 sets... as for the LW suspension set, i would say its a good invest... the reversible arms allow various settings to the suspension... the only boohoo, imho, is that you cannot add torque rods... which i like on my cars... lastly, adding ti screws... ti adjustable links...
Aluma

At my local track...small 100ft straight very tech...72spur with 24pinion 48pitch on the monster motor. AT a Big, smooth, sweeping track, 72/29 was the biggest I could go without burning out the motor and still keeping up with the big dogs.
As far as your problems...blue loctite bro! remember that its pretty much all aluminum/carbon fiber/ steel parts car. Anything screws into some type of metal has to be blue loctited.
Also, replace ALL screws with a stainless or titanium set. The wood screws tamiya includes tend to come out of the plastic cuz of the course thread. A stainless or ***. set will come with fine threaded and Hex heads...MUCH better.
I haven't had anything come off or break on my car since I've had it...about 1.5 years now. I wouldn't worry too much about alumn. hopups, they are not going to help. That new suspension though might. rather wait, save my cash and just get a new version whenever it comes out.
Oh wait, I have had something bend...but a full speed crash into the foot of a turn marshall at the end of a straight dont really count...something was bound to give...hehehe....hinge pin holders(A,B,C...etc...) make sure not to shim them too high off the bottom plate!!! makes them weaker and more susceptable to twisting. I run all mine no shims.(more turn in) ;)

Ok, I raced mine about 4 times now, it's a AWESOME car! However, I have broke a few things.....
1. C2 upright x3
2. Upright holder x1
3. Stripped spur gear x1
4. Stripped one way gear x1
5. broke diff out drivers x2 ( this was with #1, running diff in front)
Then last night, I bent the suspension pin that goes into the blocks. It also sheared one of the TI screws holding the block on!
What should I go and buy for spare parts? I have a few gear parts, and upright parts, what else?

I've been hit by nitro cars, flipped on my lid, jumped disks, and raced for 1.5years with it...nothings broke yet. anyway, get another front diff, and the parts you've broken along with the suspension setting blocks and pins.
oh yeah, switch to normal 48 or 64 pitch spur gear since yours stripped.

You do seem to be giving your evo 3 a hard time :D . mine has survive close to a seaso of racing without breaking any parts aside from the occasional one way gear. as for gearing, If you are using the 96t spur then 30t - 34t pinions should have you covered for stock motors you can use the pinions made by tamiya for the 415 or 64pitch pinions made by just about everyone else.

:) I'm a pretty crap driver mainly due to working shifts and attending local meets on an irregular basis. Started with TB01 and changed to a Surikarn which is brilliant, lap times are coming down all the time.
I run mine with stock spur and pinion in 27t class, front 1 deg neg. camber, 1 deg. toe in, rear as stock, blue springs front with 55W oil, rear yellow springs 65W oil, rear shocks in middle top mount position. No anti roll bars as I found this improved corner grip.
I have run a ball diff in the front, never even used the one way, +2mm offset wheels to avoid the rims catching the camber links. I replaced the front hard wishbones with stock TA04 nylon items as I found the hard ones too brittle and broke with the slightest knock. I use an HPI MT servo saver with the plastic spring as these seem lot better than the Tamiya high torque servo saver. Vega V3 ESC and Sanwa WRX digital servo, Take Off CS22 tyres (it's getting cold here in the U.K) and Model Tech graphite composite wheels, these are brilliant, light weight and tough as old boots.
Stratos 2 shell is good but when it needs replacing I have a Subaru Legacy B4 ready.
What settings do you good guys run? :)

Quick question... Does anybody know what the model number is to replace the spacers on top of the steering wipers... I lost mine and misplaced my car manual somewhere... It doesn't matter if its from a parts set I just need those parts. THX

Hehe :D there is a way to do this... if you have 6 850 bearings aka 5x8mm bearings, you can place 3 on each steering post... i had to do that for one of my cars... im still looking around for the manual online...

 Presumably the parts you are after are the same as mine, Evo3 Surikarn, in which case you need the A parts sprue, part no. 50988. It is the A6 part which is the spacer that goes on the steering post. Unfortunately you will need to order two as the kit comes supplied with two A parts sprues and there is only one spacer on each.
I hope this helps.

I just bought a super clean Evo3 Surikarn myself ... I'll post my usual killer pics when it arrives ;) I got it delivered with a couple sets of new Take-Off tires, Monster Stock motor, a few hop-ups and lots of spares for $175. Can't go wrong with that!

That's what I thought too! I guess we'll find out when it arrives ... maybe today. I did buy it from a Canadian, and they're not to bright
People are letting Evo3's go dirt cheap these days though, and they can still be wickedly fast.

 Some may be letting them go wickedly cheap but I'm after a realistic price for mine and if it does not sell I shall keep it as a spare. It was just getting a bit difficult trying to set up two different cars at the track as my son runs a TRF415. You could'nt really transfer settings over from one to the other and it meant carrying two lots of spares.
Still a Surikarn won't be a bad spare car to have!!!!

I got my Evo3 on Saturday ... was pleasantly surprised with the extras it had, and very clean too. I cleaned it up more, put some new low friction ball cups on and took these pics. Looking forward to running it!
I also just ordered a bunch of red ball studs and red aluminum turnbuckles from Walawala, count on new pics once those are installed :) I'm diggin the red.

Hi guys, where do you guys buy parts online? I know speedtechrc list a lot of parts, but they are out of stock on most of them.
Where else can I go to buy parts and hop ups online for my Evo?
Thanks in advance.

hey guys I need more part #'s can't find these blasted #'s anywhere. O.k first off I need the oneway out drive cup(and shims), then the battery holder that keeps them from sliding out sidways, the diff ring gear and the pinion that turns the ring gear, lastly the regular diff outdrives and the thrust screw that holds everything together. Thanks.

I need some help if you guys don't mind. I picked up a car today (pic attached) and I'm not quite sure what it is. I got the car plus a motor and body for $20, and the thing is in pretty darn good condition (I think the chassis itself is new). I already have a nice touring car so I didn't really need this car, but I figured for the price, why not? I'm thinking of either keeping it as a backup car or selling it for profit. I'm probably gonna ke
The pic doesn't really show much detail, and I'm sorry for that. I was told that the car is a TB series and that it seems like a down-spec Evo 3. The car has a carbon fiber chassis and top deck, not a tub chassis, but I think that was recently added. Also, the brace above the bumber is plastic and not CF.
The bulkheads/diff cases are plastic, the steering bellcranks are aluminum w/ball bearings, the drive shaft is a grey/greenish aluminum piece as are the suspension mounts (the rear-most one has "D" etched in it, the others have "A"). The car had TRF dampers, but they were not sold with the car (I think those were also added). The suspension arms are stamped with "D-1" in the front and "D-2" in the rear. The motor mount is adjustable; the right side of it is open (its not the one with 4 sets of mounting holes), and it looks like cast aluminum. There are red swaybars front and rear, and it has universals all around. The spur gear mount is the aluminum/carbon fiber setup.I have no clue what size the spur is.
If I need to describe more I will.
If somebody could tell me what exactly I have, that would be great. I orderd some shocks for it already, but I'm not sure about gearing. I know its a metric pitch. If somebody could recommend some gearing (stock and mod) for it, I would appreciate it. Also, does anybody know where I can download a manual? I tried Tamiya Club but I wasn't really sure what to look for.
Thank you!
EDIT: I ordered some shocks for it, but the one thing I can't find is servo mounts. Where can I get them? Part number? Thanks again, sorry for all the questions.

It looks like a normal evo3 with a TB02 front body mount(they probably broke the original in a front end collision). Servo mounts can be found at towerhobbies. Look up evolution 3 or TB02 and go into the replacement part link next to the picture. Hope you ordered TRF shocks...and a set of associated springs. As far as gearing, I hate the tamiya pinions/spurs so I bought a 72T associated TC3 spur, and an assortment of pinions from 25(short tracks) through 30(long tracks) for stock motor... I've never run a mod in mine. I also suggest replacing the front one way with a differential like the rears...:D

I just ordered the normal tamiya aluminum shocks. I don't plan on racing this car, just want to get it running. I'd rather put the extra money into my JRX-S.
It already has a diff in the front. It seems like the guy stripped some of the nicer parts off the car before selling it to me (I know he's a big tamiya nut... probably has more cars they'll work in), but for $20 I can't complain.
